NEARLY 500 FIREWORKS were seized by gardaí during searches on Friday evening in Cork.
Over the course of separate searches of two houses in Mallow, gardaí found weapons, fireworks and suspected drugs.
As part of the first search, gardaí seized 490 fireworks, an airsoft replica handgun and pepper spray. They also found a tazer, which had been disguised as a mobile phone, as well as a machete.
Small quantities of what appeared to be cocaine were also discovered, along with cannabis herb and diazepam. A set of weighing scales and €400 in cash was also seized.
The second search also revealed a legally-held rife, as well as ammunition and five airsoft replica firearms.
Gardaí believe that some the latter may break legal requirements on muzzle energy.

It’s expected that all of the weapons will be sent for ballistic examination, while the suspected drugs will be forensically analysed.
Gardaí have not made any arrests but a spokesperson said that they were “following a definite line of enquiry”.

@Seaniecp: no they don’t. If they exceed 1 joule they’re illegal and cannot be licenced. If they’re under a joule they’re legal and do not require a licence, but cannot be brandished in public. Airsoft itself is a sport.

No enforcement apparent, probably focussed on pub patrols.
The penalties need to be stiffened to make it too expensive to use them.
A few e500 fines would stop people buying them.

@Alan Dillon: its not always kids.. grown adults using them in my area too. They’re going off in day and night the last few weeks, its actually a pain, esp with a 4 yr old trying to sleep at night and Im due a baby any day now too. They litreally have free reign with them its ridiculous. One of the many reasons I completely dislike Halloween, no bother them being used in a controlled environment but letting them off in daylight for the crack, then going non stop at night. Police only have to drive down the road to get the gang entertaining themselves they arent hard to find. But jst prefere to turn a blind eye.

If I was an armed Garda and someone pulled one of those on me, I’m afraid “air soft” or not by the time we’d find out for sure they’d have holes in them. How are you supposed to know????
Airsoft they are all toys, they look real and it does sting when you get shot. Also a few fireworks plus a rifle someone has a licence for.
If is wasn’t for the small amount of drugs there is nothing worth writing.
