US pays tribute to 9/11 victims as pandemic forces socially distanced commemorations

President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden will pay their respects at the same memorial today.

AMERICANS ARE COMMEMORATING 9/11 with tributes that have been altered by coronavirus precautions and woven into the presidential campaign.

President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden will pay their respects at the same memorial without crossing paths.

In New York, victims’ relatives began gathering for split-screen remembrances, one at the 11 September memorial plaza at the World Trade Centre and another on a nearby corner, set up by a separate 9/11-related organisation.

The Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation objected to the memorial’s decision to forgo a longstanding tradition of having relatives read the names of the dead, often adding poignant tributes. Memorial leaders said the change for the 19th anniversary of the terror attacks was a coronavirus safety precaution.

Kathy Swift arrived early at the alternative ceremony, wearing a T-shirt honouring her killed brother, Thomas Swift, who worked in finance.

“We still have to remember,” said Swift. “The whole country’s going downhill. It’s one thing after another, and now with the Covid. I’m glad they’re still having this, though.”

Trump and Biden are both headed – at different times – to the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Vowing to never forget the nearly 3,000 people who died on 9/11, Trump tweeted that the United States is honouring a commitment made in 2001 to always remember the “innocent Americans who were senselessly killed”.

The anniversary of 9/11 is a complicated occasion as the US grapples with a health crisis, searches its soul over racial injustice and prepares to choose a leader to chart a path forward.

Still, 9/11 families say it is important for the nation to pause and remember the hijacked-plane attacks at the trade centre, the Pentagon in Washington and near Shanksville in 2001.

@windbag: Said this below – might be a bit controversial – but I think it’s an important point.

The answer to all this is to make it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to have a mobile device capable of connecting to the internet. And parents held accountable for material their kids watch on the internet. The computer, like a television, or books, needs to be supervised at all times. There should never be a reason a child is on a computer unsupervised.

It really needs to happen, illegal for internet mobile devices for kids. It’s simple enough. Yes, they can have a phone, that they can call and make text messages.

I think it would save society!

@Eugene Tyson: that is not a sensible solution. You would cut people off from the enormously beneficial facility that is the internet and which is essentially the sum of human knowledge because you think you know best, and because you think the less savoury parts of it outweigh the benefits. I skimmed the article so not sure who exactly they are but the Dawson person quoted as saying that it’s not good enough to just say it’s bad don’t do it, but instead to make sure it’s taken in context and people realise that it is what it is, fiction, and not reality.

@Ronan Fahy: no you cut off kids from the internet on mobile devices only. Meaning your 12 year old cant go to the end of the road to look up hard core p*rn and sadistic stuff other than prn.
Still access computers at home supervised.

You don’t really read anything on the journal and generally skim. Looking at the person rather than the argument. Typical of a lot of internet trolls.

@Eugene Tyson: what is so bad about porn anyway? I would suggest that the shame and fear of talking openly and realistically about sex, how do do it properly, how to pleasure ourselves and others, has caused far more societal problems than availability of porn.
All we need to do as parents is to develop the tools to discuss porn and sex openly with our teenage kids as happens in other cultures.

@Eugene Tyson: it is normal for a 13 year old to be curious about sex.

Provided they are given positive sensible advice and not the impression that sex is associated with shame, they should be able to distinguish what is real and what is not when they inevitably encounter porn. So long as they have the tools, it won’t scar them for life or anything. It’s just sex after all.

Perhaps more supervision from parents would be a step in the right direction but the government making mobile devices capable of connecting to the internet illegal for under 18s is just plain daft. That’s a step in the wrong direction, technology should be promoted among today’s youth in order to inspire them to create and develop new technologies in the future that help with the betterment and advancement of humanity!

Households should have to opt-in within their ISP contract to be able to browse pornographic internet content.
If they hit a website deemed porny, a page pops up asking for a PIN for the account holder to permit continuing either for a few minutes or permanently.

@Brian Fitzgerald: You did not read that. It is not a permit. It is allowing the account holder to decide if they want to allow users on their internet connection to see unrestricted pornography. It is nothing to do with State control or permits, it is giving the person paying for the service rights over what that service is used for. This may or may not be effective but it is not censorship.

Better to not drive it underground, that happened years ago and look how prevalent it is. We are biologically, and functionally designed as a species to procreate. @alphanautica: it is entirely possible. The UK have this, and I was surprised that it was not an option when we moved here. By default such things are blocked, as well as they can be I suppose, and this can be allowed by going to the online account and switching the filter off. Sky Ireland even has the options to turn on, but when you submit, it says that it is not available in ROI.
It’s not a magic solution, but it works and I wish we had it here.

@JayDoge: Opt in won’t work – there’s other ways to circumvent any block the ISP put on the internet settings. Simplest being a VPN and kids know how to do that. If they block VPNs then someone will come up with another way. And if they block that – then they’ll come up with something else.

Only way to fight this is not allow kids to have mobile devices connected to the internet, it should be illegal for them. Parents should be held accountable, as they would be with movies, tv shows, books etc. There’s no supervision happening, and mobile devices means they go to the wall at the end of the road, or wherever and access whatever the hell they want. It should be illegal for kids to have access to the internet on a mobile device.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the Ministers response. Any child with an internet connected smartphone ca access porn. Parents might think that they have everything covered by putting net filters on their PC and checking their browser history but when was the last time they checked their child’s phone?

Children today download porn and pass it around the classroom over bluetooth like they were trading football cards. The smarter ones download to their phones and then upload it to the cloud so that there are no files or traves o their phones. They use apps to clear their caches and browser history every time they log out of their browser. The really smart ones go to cafes and libraries that have high speed internet and upload/download there so there is no ip address of their histories.

Lets face it, the average 12 year old can run rings around their parents.

So when this report says “Just over 60% of students use porn for masturbation regularly”, in actual fact what it means is 60% of the 1,934 of those who responded to the online survey. About 1160 of them. The other 18,000 students couldn’t care less and their lives are still a mystery.

Is that not the parents making sure their children are not going to these sites, what happened to parenting now? Or is that the responsibility of the state or teachers now?

It should be opped out , if you don’t want it available in your house like with sky. Think with porn it more available to young people than every day sex, oral sex ect… More of this should be available freely online so when a young mind wants to know it will see and read the right information.

“Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access porn”
    How tragic….
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access terrorist material
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access suicide manual
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access extremist material
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access extreme religious material
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access murder manual
Any child with an internet connected smartphone can access everything

Down with that vile thing we call internet.

I had internet since age 9 so I had access to internet porn from a very early age. The internet can make it an addiction (due to volume and categories) and such an addiction from an early age can be unhealthy. I personally grew out of that addiction and I assume most will. I don’t think it causes children psychological harm discovering pornography on their own. Parents have a responsibility in my opinion to warn kids from an early age of pedophiles. I personally never make contact with kids if I can help it as I wouldn’t want my kids chatting with strangers. Happy surfing kids, internet is one of man’s best achievements.
