A SUSPECTED PETROL bomb attack on a family home in Drogheda , county Louth last night has been described as “evil in the extreme,” by Sinn Fein deputy Imelda Munster. 

Deputy Munster, who lives in Drogheda, said, “it was an horrific attack.” 

A 30-year-old mother and her three sons, all believed to be under 12 years of age, had to escape through an upstairs window. 

All four were said to be uninjured but shocked.

The scene was preserved overnight and was technically examined by Garda forensic experts this morning as part of the investigation into the suspected arson attack.

Indications are that it is not linked to the gangland feud.

The fire brigade were called by local people who saw flames coming from the door of the semi detached house in St Laurence’s Park at approximately 9.40pm.

Drogheda fire service responded and extinguished the blaze. 

It is believed that the family had only moved there in last month. 

Gardaí say the cause of the fire is under investigation and will include whether an item with some form of an accelerant was used to start the fire; damage was caused to the door and porch.

Flames were first seen coming from the front door, which is at the side of the three bedroom house, and when neighbours rushed to see if they could help,  they saw the woman and the three boys jumping from a first floor bedroom window.

Munster said, “it is evil in the extreme to put a mother and three young lives at risk and not to give a damn as to whether the family lived or died.”

She is encouraging anyone with information “to help find the perpetrator to contact the Gardai, the council or any public representative. 

She said any information will be treated with confidence.
