'National Children's Hospital will go ahead' - Rabbitte

It’s reported today that news of the location of the hospital will now be delayed until September.

THE MINISTER FOR Communications and Energy has said that there is an ‘absolute commitment’ to the National Children’s Hospital, despite a hold up in confirming where it will be located.

It’s reported today that the announcement about the location of the hospital will now not come until after the Dáil’s summer recess, something which Minister Rabbitte has expressed surprise about.

Speaking to Newstalk this morning Minister Rabbitte said that the Government is committed to moving forward with the hospital but that he thought the decision would “be with us before the August holiday”.

However he said that he would rather the government get it right, but said the sooner the Minister for Health James Reilly comes to the Government with more details, the better.

Minister Reilly received a report on the location for the National Children’s Hospital last month from a review group established to assess the various options. The group received over 30 offers of sites and met with 21 groups, representatives and professional bodies.

Proposals that have been made public in recent weeks include building the hospital at the site of the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, on a site near St James’s Hospital, on an area of land near the Phoenix Park, a location in Tallaght, and a greenfield site near Dublin Airport.

There has also been a proposal submitted for a revised development at the site of the Mater.
