Coronavirus: 16 deaths and 270 new cases confirmed in Ireland

The latest figures were confirmed by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

A FURTHER 270 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has said this evening.

In a statement, it said that a further 16 people confirmed to have Covid-19 have died, including 14 recorded this month.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Ireland is now 1,963, and the total number of confirmed cases is now at 65,889.

The latest figures come almost three weeks since the introduction of Level 5 restrictions.

Public health figures have said the lower numbers of new cases in recent weeks is to be welcomed, but have cautioned it’s too early to advise what form restrictions may take in December.

As of 2pm today, 282 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, including 40 in ICU.

The national 14-day incidence rate is now 151.5 per 100k population, and has halved since exceeding 300 per 100k last month.

The highest number of cases were recorded in Dublin, with 82 new cases.

There were 21 in Donegal, 18 in Roscommon, 17 in Limerick, 17 in Tipperary, 14 in Meath, 12 in Sligo and Kildare and 11 in Waterford. The remaining counties recorded less than 10 new cases.

In a statement, chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “The significant improvement in the profile of the disease is encouraging: the 14-day incidence of 152 cases per 100,000 is down by 51% compared to the previous two weeks.

“To maintain this positive trajectory, we need to remain vigilant to the highly infectious nature of this virus, which can easily spread from person to person through close contact and by social mixing. Our individual everyday choices to stay at home and keep our contacts to a minimum are vital to driving down the spread of Covid-19.”

@JB: Cases need to be below 100, even 50. And more testing centres made available, better border policy up north, and some type of test and check at the airports. This lockdown has to amount to something, not just the usual small bandaid on a severed limb.

@Lad: nphet also knows as the HSE. Don’t think most would be so quick to lavish praise on essentially the HSE senior mgt who mis manage an above average EU health service budget year in year out to deliver a below EU average health service. In the private sector that gets you sacked. For nphet / HSE senior mgt it gets them another 4 billion to mis manage next year. It’s true sometimes really life is more messed up than fantasy and amazing how little this gets discussed in the ‘media’.

@Declan: I would be the first to call out the management of the HSE and the system being run over the past decades. But the HSE is the responsibility of the government to control and there is no one person accountable for decades of failures. But this has nothing to do with that, NPHET recommended something against public opinion and that of the government and stuck to what they believed to be right (and they were) while taking the slack. A party could easily have weighed with public opinion as it would have been the safe option.

Not giving praise/credit, whatever you want to call it, because of past HSE failures is moving the goalposts. Their decision is clearly saving lives and to suggest they don’t deserve praise for that is simply moronic. Also don’t say ‘most (people)’, its your opinion.

@The God Of All Nerds: Personally I think it shows that we still need to work at this.
The deaths are a consequence of things just getting out of hand again, it was known that 1000plus cases and more would result in increased fatalities and it has, and had the minority simply followed the rules and were a little more pragmatic we’d probably have similar cases and a lot fewer deaths.
16 families right now are crying, angry, forlorn and its a direct result of a minority.

I think we need to drop down to level 4 next week and see what happens for 2 weeks and if cases continue to drop off but deaths continue to be at double digits then back up to 5 until people learn.

    @Pat Mc Cormack: No.

Flu is virtually non-extant, crushed by the social distancing measures we imposed. Flu is down 98% globally.

“a 98% decrease in influenza activity as measured by percentage of submitted specimens testing positive”

and Flu in the US also decreased enormously.

“Inter seasonal (i.e., summer) circulation of influenza in the United States (May 17–August 8, 2020) is currently at historical lows (median = 0.20% tests positive in 2020 versus 2.35% in 2019, 1.04% in 2018, and 2.36% in 2017).”

    Olsen, S.J., Azziz-Baumgartner, E., Budd, A.P., Brammer, L., Sullivan, S., Pineda, R.F., Cohen, C. and Fry, A.M., 2020. Decreased influenza activity during the covid-19 pandemic—United States, Australia, Chile, and South Africa, 2020. , (37), p.1305.
    https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6937a6.htm2

This report fro the the UK Government, also reports extremely low levels of Influenza world wide:

In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, influenza activity remained below winter-seasonal levels. In the temperate zones of the southern hemisphere, the influenza activity remained low in comparison with previous seasons. Worldwide, of the very low numbers of detections reported, seasonal influenza A viruses accounted for the majority of detections.

In North America, influenza activity indicators were at very low levels.
In Europe, influenza activity remained at inter-seasonal levels.
In Central Asia, no influenza updates for this reporting period.
In Northern Africa, there were no influenza updates for this reporting period.
In Western Asia, there were no influenza detections..
In East Asia, influenza illness indicators and influenza activity remained at inter-seasonal levels..
In the Caribbean and Central American countries, no influenza detections were reported.
In tropical South American, tropical Africa and Southern Asia there were sporadic influenza virus or no detections across reporting countries.
In South East Asia, influenza A(H3N2) virus detection were reported in Cambodia.

@David Jordan: I wonder if this “Its Flu Season” is related to the new crazy conspiracy theory going around, that claims that the increase in COVID-19 hospitalisations and deaths across Europe and also the US are misdiagnosed Flu cases.

It started a few weeks ago, posts claimed that 3 million people die per year of flu (this is a 10 – 15 fold exaggeration) and that RT-PCR tests are misdiagnosing Flu cases as COVID-19. And now that were in Flu season, that’s why were seeing hospitalisations and death, it’s the Flu bro not COVID-19.

I first noticed the myth spread by Polish on YouTube, many Poles seem to think that the vast increase in COVID-19 hospitalisations and deaths in Poland is seasonal Flu. I have also seen Americans tell me this too (Poles also think Drs are being paid to misdiagnose COVID-19, or it something to do with Bill Gates owning the company that makes the RT-PCR machines).

@nelliekel: “wake up flu covid are both coronavirus stains”

    No they are not.

Flu is caused by several strains of Influenza A, Influenza B viruses, these are negative sense RNA viruses that make up four of the seven genera of the family Orthomyxoviridae.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza#Virology

SARS-COV-2 on the other hand, is a coronavirus, a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus.completely unrelated to Influenza viruses, Other coronaviruses that infect humans include HCoV-NL63, HCoV-HKU1, HCoV-229E, whese cause about 10 – 15% of common colds.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus

See I was right, this is the crazy conspiracy theory that claims COVID-19 is the Flu bro!

Tragic that there were so many deaths reported today, but the reporting by some sections of the media, in particular out in the West of Dublin are poor. Doomsayers inc. is what they should be called. Whilst reporting the numbers, would it not have been a positive item if they had reported that notwithstanding the deaths, hospital admissions were down and ICU numbers steady. But no, like the grim reaper, we talk only of deaths and case numbers. Balanced journalism is what the media could do better at.

@**CAPTAIN MOUSTACHE AND HIS MAGIC FLUTE: 14 from November we are still in November add the others and give us the total, if you wish you can go back to October and we can then compare from May to September.
Otherwise you’re incredulous post is moot.

@PaulOMahoney Irish: Wow. Between your comment here and comment above asking someone ‘to educate’ themselves about Danish borders. Does slagging people off on social media make you feel better about yourself? What makes you such an authority on all things covid. The funny thing is you’re wrong about Denmark. Borders are absolutely not closed.

Had a wonderful weekend down the country. Local pub opened for a few locals and their friends. Pints tasted so good. Was grateful to see that some people are not participating in this nonsense

Those deaths aren’t all in 24 hours they are over the course of the last 9 days, Tragic all the same, good to see cases coming down though
