'All hands on deck': Strategy for roll-out of Covid vaccine to be given to government by 11 December

The taskforce will today discuss what groups should get the vaccine first, and the plan for vaccinating healthcare workers.

THE STRATEGY FOR rolling out the Covid-19 vaccine is to be presented to government by 11 December, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

Speaking to reporters at Dublin Port today, he said he spoke to the chairman of the Government’s vaccine taskforce, Professor Brian McCraith this morning about the delivery of the report on how to manage a national vaccine roll-out.

The taskforce is meeting today to discuss the logistics of the plan, such as, in addition to GPs and pharmacies, who else might be able to administer the vaccine.

“They’re working very energetically on this. He [McCraith] hopes to have a strategy for government by the 11th of December, in terms of how we will distribute vaccines.

“It will require a national effort to get the vaccines out properly and safely. And we are working with all stakeholders and people generally to cooperate with us.

“And again, a bit like the inter-agency cooperation on Brexit, we will need inter-agency cooperation. All hands on deck for a national effort around the vaccine as well,” said the Taosieach.

The taskforce will today also discuss what groups should get the vaccine first, and the plan for vaccinating healthcare workers.

The issue of indemnity will also be a matter up for discussion, which will factor in the role the State Claims Agency will play.

How consent forms are administered as well as how data is collected from those that are vaccinated are also some of the matters the need to be worked out.

Due to some of the vaccines requiring below 70 degrees storage facilities, the logistics around storing the vaccine in some cases needs to be clarified.

It is understood that Pfizer has agreed to transport its vaccine to each member state in the EU, and to also provide storage trucks.

It is believed that mandatory vaccination of the population is not something under consideration.

@Fionn Darland: What have anti-maskers got to do with a vaccine? Are you suggesting that because they’re anti-mask they must also be anti-vaccine. Not always the case I’d imagine.

@Fionn Darland: Anti maskers will be back on the streets with craziness like vax controls people’s actions or whatever madness they can dream up and when it works back out to claim they were right all along and the whole c19 thing was a hoax designed to control people. Impossible to argue with them so ignore and they’ll get older, maybe even get some sense (doubtful) and go away.

If somebody is pro-brexit or pro-trump or anti-vaccine or whatever, that’s their business. I don’t agree with them but I don’t see the point in labeling them as some kind of fruitcake club. It serves no purpose.

Prioritise healthcare workers, then other frontline staff, then the elderly and the vulnerable who can get it, then the rest of us.

@Louise Lennon: it was around 1300 people and our government did know about it for 2 years and continued to pressure people to take it even after the drug company put out a warning. https://www.bmj.com/content/362/bmj.k3948

@Louise Lennon: This is just another example of disinformation. Pandermix was/is a H1N1, non-FDA approved vaccine that had a minimum impact on those who received it – about three in every 100,000.

Although it’s unacceptable that any vaccine should be detrimental to those receiving it, it can happen.

Pfizer’s and Moderna’s vaccines are mRNA vaccines (which simply instruct the cells to produce the spike protein of the Covid-19) and in spite of what your first comment would lead some readers to believe, they have been ‘trialled and tested’ except in parallel processes, not sequential ones, which makes the whole thing move a lot faster. This was due primarily to the massive mounts of money pumped into finding a vaccine and the number of pharmas using their expertise in a unified push towards a common goal. Steps were not ‘skipped’.

Lipid nanoparticle systems are already used in other FDA approved drugs with no side effects.

You seem to comment just for commenting’s sake, without realised the damage you do. You also seem to belong to the category of people who believe the Earth is flat and that Hugo Chávez came back from the dead with a horde of communists to oust Trump from the White House.

    Please research before posting.

What’s in this vaccine to say it has to be stored at – 80.
Must have a hell of a good anti freeze in it.

@Geoff Bateman: the Oxford version of the vaccine is not for profit, its being done for free. Also there are some combinations of the two shots that offers much 90%. But even 70% is better than nothing

@Geoff Bateman: I read recently that most vaccines have a less than 20% effectiveness. If true, 70% is really good.

Also, personally, I believe 70% effectiveness far more than I believe 95% effectiveness. the 2 that are apparently 95% effective scream at me that they’re too good to be true.. and usually when something feels too good to be true, you’re as well to turn and run.

@Mirabelle Stonegate: sure it’s only a small study group.
40,000 people isn’t a million elderly and vunerable.
The real effectiveness is in stopping the deaths here and most vaccines fail directly in inducing a immune response in the most vunerable.
That’s where well how effective it is.
I think the hopes should be very tapering and more realistic to believe this will be another flu like vaccine and we’ll still need a strategy to live with the virus.
Pinning all hopes on a silver bullet is always doomed to fail.

So the US and UK will start administering vaccines between December 1st and December 12th.

We hope to have a strategy by December 11th.

    That’s nice.
