Down Syndrome Ireland urges Emmerdale producers to scrap pregnancy termination storyline

The producers of the TV show have defended the storyline.

DOWN SYNDROME IRELAND is urging the producers of the UK soap Emmerdale to cancel a storyline featuring a couple deciding to terminate their pregnancy after being told their unborn child has Down syndrome.

The group says the storyline will be challenging and distressing for many people with Down syndrome and their families and the difficult emotions and choices that arise when considering termination could have been explored without mentioning Down syndrome.

“We would like to remind TV producers that people with Down syndrome watch TV programmes, listen to the news and read media articles,” Down Syndrome Ireland said.

This storyline will be challenging and distressing for many people with Down syndrome and their families, as well as for expectant parents.

The announcement of the storyline earlier this month prompted a backlash against the ITV soap. An online petition calling for the plot to be scrapped has garnered around 27,000 signatures.

However, ITV has defended the storyline saying “we take our responsibilities extremely seriously when portraying such sensitive issues”.

It added that it consulted with many individuals and organisations – including parents with children who have Down syndrome, charities and medical professionals – before filming the story, which features the characters Laurel and Jai.

“The full context of Laurel and Jai’s story will be portrayed in detail in forthcoming episodes because understandably the couple only reach this heart-breaking decision after much soul-searching. Emmerdale felt the story of thousands of couples who make this choice every year, feeling unable to talk about it, needed to be told,” ITV said.

As someone who’s first child was born with Downs and he subsequently died 8 months later, this is a tough subject for many.
After we got pregnant again we went for amniocentesis and we laid out all the options that were available to us should we have another child with a disability.
Anyone who has to make these decisions don’t do it lightly and it does keep you awake at night.
I think banning the program is a bit crass, but it needs to be handled in such a way that isn’t inflammatory to people’s emotions.
And there are people who face these decisions for a number of reasons, my wife would have found it difficult to have a second child who was disabled and going through more pain isn’t something we wanted.
Thankfully 2 and 3 were fine, but we remember him everyday he would have been 25 last month.
This is a difficult topic but I think it needs to be discussed, there are no support really for parents facing this, perhaps airing it might begin the start of a change.

@Mjhint: Thanks, having him in our lives opened up a world we never knew existed, and when I see people with Downs now in our communities working and contributing it reminds me that they have so much to offer society.
They have an extra chromosome my Dad still says he was ” super human ” because of that.
I’m not saying that it was easy , there were a lot of tears after his birth and obviously his death, and sometimes on any given day.
But he’s ours his body is in Cork, Nana and Grandad proudly takes care of his grave and he lives with us if only in our minds.

@Thomas O’ Donnell: This has nothing to do with race or any of the other important topics that take the attention of other just as important causes such as disability discrimination. This piece is about a show on tv highlighting a true life event and how a couple handles it. I’d probably know nothing about American history only for the shows or films I’ve watched in tv.
But why race has to be brought into it again I don’t know.

Let them tell this story, which represents a decision made by many couples. They are not endorsing this as being the “correct” decision but, they are telling the story that represents an option open to couples. There are many people who would choose to terminate a pregnancy due to a medical condition that would limit their child because they may not feel cut out for the life long job of rearing such a child or, maybe, they don’t want to bring a child into the world who may suffer complications arising from such a diagnosis. There are varying degrees of down syndrome and, some children with down syndrome can live fairly full lives, other children can have complications that impact every day of their lives.

But give the same respect to both sides if you’re talking about it. 100% every pregnancy deserves the right to life, doesn’t mean it will happen or that the mother is strong enough to follow through with it. It’s a frightening thing to be faced with but believe me it’s not doom and gloom.

Life can be challenging and distressing. We continue to do a disservice to everyone and especially young people by trying to create a false narrative where the world is perfect and then label them snowflakes when they can’t cope with these harsh realities later on. Adaptability to challenging moments is an integral part of development.

Whatever your view on the subject I hardly think the producers are interested. They’re not providing a social service and morality doesn’t enter into it for them. It’s a TV show plain and simple. The success of a TV show is measured by ratings and how many people are talking about it. Controversy has always guaranteed viewers, the Jeremy Kyle Show being a prime example for ITV. Strong viewer numbers guarantee the producers’ jobs. This storyline has garnered lots of media attention and led to much public discussion as on here so it has succeeded in its aim, which in this case is not to entertain or inform but to increase viewership. If you want to know about the dilemma parents face in cases like this in real life then Emmerdale is hardly the place to go to find it.

I don’t see what the issue is with updating the script to a non specified genetic condition. There are so many genetic conditions out there. Most don’t even have a name as such. Just the name of the affected gene or chromosome.

But would I want my child as an adult to sit down and watch something on tv that explains all the reasons why she could have been aborted. Absolutely not. I’m not suggesting they scrap the story line. My suggestion was to use a non specified genetic condition so adults with Down syndrome aren’t specifically mentioned. It’s a small change and doesn’t change the story line at all. My own daughters genetic syndrome is very rare but has a lot of crossovers with Down syndrome. And there are lots of similarities with lots of syndromes too. There is a way around this that could be much more sensitive.

@Em Watson: It does change the storyline. 100% changes the storyline. If they didn’t want to do a storyline about it, they would have picked something else. Are you ok with someone who’s family or life had been ruined or effected by alcoholism to sit through a storyline involving that? Or should they scrap those too and just do a story about a non specific chemical problem? Or how about someone’s child dying? Maybe instead they could just send the child away and use that as a metaphor? The point of soaps, as well as being over the top dramatic, is to do the tough storylines which happen in real life. The reality is that some people, for whatever reasons, just don’t see themselves being able to live with a child with DS. Don’t want your child to hear that, don’t let them watch it.

There are many distressing dramas in television soups. I think it is positive the audience watch the drama that such news are for parents. The choice of down syndrome couldn’t be better as it’s the best perception in the community.

It is showing that parents made a very personal and private decision, the one that suits them, suits their family, with freedom and knowledge.

I have a friend that for her the decision was easy, her daughter was alive, that was the only thing she wished for.

I understand the distress for the down community and their families but I would take the choice with proud. Who knows the development of the story? We might have the first down syndrome baby actor!

@Maria Quinn: In Emmerdale, the female vet, Rhona, gave birth to a DS baby boy a few years ago.
Recently, 2 other cast members, same soap, were faced with the choice of proceed with the pregnancy to full term, knowing that their baby would only have minutes to live because of lack of kidneys, or abortion. They chose to continue. The episode that showed the birth and the 20 or so minutes of life of their baby was handled in the most beautiful way.
Life isn’t always fair, and we all have to learn to deal with some very unpleasant choices from time to time.
