Poll: Is 8 December the start of Christmas?

‘Tis the season… or is it?

THE EIGHTH OF December is an important day in the run-up to the festive season.

For many, it signifies the beginning of the Christmas period and the decorations should only be put up after this date.

For others, it’s the day when hordes of shoppers from outside Dublin flock to either the capital or their nearest large town/city to pick up bits for Christmas.

So today we’re asking: Is 8 December the start of Christmas?

Poll Results:

Yes  (5646)
Christmas has already started (3316)
No (1714)

Christmas starts whenever you want it to.

However the one I can’t understand is people who put their decs up at the end of Nov / begining of Dec but take them down within a few days of the 25th.

I mean the start of Christmas is open ended but it is generally agreed that the end is Little Christmas.

@Stanley Marsh: agreed. See a few places both residential and commercial that have them up in the first week of November but gone down by new year’s eve

@Stanley Marsh: spot on. Neighbours of ours have the house lit up like graftan street in November and have the whole lot down before new years eve.

I was in Australia for Christmas a number of years ago and it amazed me how low key it was. The whole way through December, the only indication was the odd Christmas tree. The shops etc were not shoving in your face. I remember going into a department store, looking for Santa hats and I found their Christmas section tucked away in a corner of the top floor of 5 floors.

It was only in the last week or so on the run up to Christmas, when you seen any real sign of it. Quite refreshing in comparison to Ireland where Christmas seems to happen once Halloween is finished.

1st of December IS the start of Christmas. Celebrate it the whole month or it passes too quickly.

Christmas starts on the December 1st which is the first day of advent. I never understood this rush to put up a tree & decorations in November just so you can be the first to post it on social media. :-)

@Edel Quinn: Actually that’s incorrect. The first day of Advent varies. This year it was November 29th. But it always ends on December 24th.

@Micheal S. O’ Ceilleachair: I’m not but thanks anyway. I was just pointing out the correct definition of advent to the person who brought it up. It could have been any other holiday so often wrongly quoted.

I’m still sick of it all from last year and personally would ignore it all until the 24th.
But having said that, our decor is already up (Herself likes it…) and its nice to see people trying to cheer things up, so I’m not complaining. We all need a boost.
I just stay away from shops so I don’t have to hear Mariah Carey, Roy Wood and Slade, etc…
