Coronavirus: Six deaths and 6,110 new cases confirmed in Ireland

New figures were revealed by health officials this evening.

LAST UPDATE | 4 Jan 2021

HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE confirmed a further 6,110 cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.

There have been six additional deaths of patients diagnosed with the disease.

This brings the death toll to 2,265, with a total of 107,997 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the country since the start of the pandemic.

Of the cases notified today:

  • 2,911 are men / 3,195 are women
  • 63% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 36 years old
  • 3,655 in Dublin, 323 in Kildare, 291 in Cork, 234 in Limerick, 137 in Louth and the remaining 1,470 cases are spread across all other counties.

As of 2pm today, 776 Covid patients are in hospital, of which 70 are in ICU. There were 92 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

There is currently a backlog in the number of cases being reported each day due to increased demand for testing and an IT issue with the HPSC’s system for recording confirmed cases. Health officials expect the backlog to be addressed in the coming days.

Data shows there were 6,486 positive swabs taken in laboratories between Saturday and Sunday morning with 5,199 positive swabs taken between Sunday and Monday morning.

Chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan has urged people to limit their interactions.

Speaking at a briefing this evening, Dr Holohan said NPHET “haven’t been as concerned at any point in the whole time as we are now.”

Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the Nphet’s Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said scenario models raise the possibility of 1,500-2,000 people in hospital, and 200-400 people in ICU by mid-January, “if we do not act to radically reduce transmission and incidence.

“It will take all of us, adopting the public health measures of staying home and reducing contacts, to suppress current levels of disease,” he said.

Professor Nolan said incidence of the virus is highest among 19-24 year-olds and that incidence in over 65s has been rising since late December.

It is estimated that Ireland’s 14-day incidence is between 700 and 800 cases per 100,000. “Right now the underlying level of disease is higher than the first wave,” said Nolan.

Liam Woods, who is the HSE’s National Director of Acute Operations, said the HSE is introducing curtailments in non-essential services in adult hospitals in order to cope with increasing Covid-19 admissions. He said this will be subject to ongoing review.

Professor Karina Butler, Chair of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee, said; “The vaccination programme has commenced for the first priority groups. The roll out has been accelerated this week.

“As we continue to provide vaccines across the population we urge anyone with concerns or questions to contact their GP, pharmacist or healthcare service provider for factual and reliable information. The HSE.ie website also provides reliable information around vaccine efficacy and safety.”

@Liam Meade: yes it’s a tough situation for many. Maybe if the schools were to open up for the children of priority workers only, that would keep class numbers down which would keep the teachers safe. The rest of the children can be home schooled. It’ll mean a bit more work for the teachers but surely it could work?

@Jamie Bent: yes they can. Stagger the classes, tell the teachers to adjust their work hours. Give the children 4 hours each for those who’s parents are front line workers. As for all those who’s parents are essential workers (not frontline) let them learn online with all the other teachers, and include them into their current classes online. Everyone needs to adjust a little bit.

@Aaron O Brien: Aaron, fair point in essence but you don’t mention the fact that is now occurring in the uk. With hospitalsat capacity and ambulances lining up outside the only ememgency response for non covid emergencies is to be guided in first response techniques by a phone operator which is far from ideal. While that phone operator is on the line for a lot longer than usual it means that 112/ 999 calls are not being answered. The most important difference between living and dying is speed of access to medical intervention. This is not about the numbers dying from covid directly but those indirectly due to lack of emergency intervention due to covid

@Pat Ryan: totally agree. Also those that have lost their lives in todays figures relate surely to the cases identified a couple of weeks/months back. Therefore there has got to be an increase of deaths potentially in the next couple of weeks due to the time lag of being diagnosed and unfortunately passing away from covid. It genuinely makes me so sad to see people trying to justify the deaths as being old or having qualifying conditions. I would not want anybody to get covid let alone die as a result.

Using today’s 6000+ new cases to compare those deaths to is wrong. What you should be asking is how many of those 6000reported on today will be still with us in a months time, or 2 months time.

@paulie G: legally, we could not do that. The only way would have been to have held a referendum to change the role of the military. Otherwise, one single court challenge from any of the Gemmaroids and such use of the army would have had to have been ended. That would have been a colossal and reckless waste of resources. We managed to get cases pretty much to 0 by the end of the first lockdown without closing borders. Why is it we can’t go back to the restrictions of the first lockdown? Why is it you focus on the border when it has been shown time and again that it is not the primary cause? Go for the primary causes, and if necessary then go for the lower ones. You have it all backwards.

The government is not completely blameless but in all fairness how hard is it to distance yourself socially, wear a mask, wash your hands and don’t have parties. Large scale ignorance and petulance have a strong role in these numbers.

If not then we needed sophisticated testing facilities at the airports and seaports and quarantining hubs.
Not pointing the finger only at the government however, I think is both the government and its people at fault.

I refuse to believe the current case numbers we’re seeing now is down to people not wearing masks, unless the situation in the rest of the country is absolutely atrocious. I’m starting to believe those epidemiologists who believe that masks in a community situations show no significant evidence in reduction of numbers. (Masks are typically worn in medical situations to prevent bacterial spread, not viral spread.) All this said, I’ll continue to wear my mask when in shops/public transport, but as always, I’ll put more faith in social distancing and personal hygiene.

Could be because most people aren’t wearing them, but that’s not what I’ve been seeing anyway. @James Lough: Darwin’s evolutionary theory “survival of the fittest” – He theorised that it’s not the strongest of the species that survive, but those most adaptable to change. So adapting to the new normal = higher chance of survival. Social distance when required, good hand hygiene, wear a mask, at least for another few months.

Nah, they never closed a ward due to their nurses contracting the seasonal flu, or being a close contact of someone who had. Also, according to Professor Conor Deasy, Emergency Medicine Lead at CUH, he has said that the “CUH has had to adapt and reschedule out-patient appointments. The hospital remains open but only for emergencies.” <- May be that is one of the pesky reasons as to why trolley numbers a re down the past year ?

Retailers hyping it up for months during a pandemic was frankly irresponsible and we absolutely should cut the deal with socialising, as if covid takes a break. It was one Christmas, we could easily have toned it down, but too many people didn’t.

@Shnack: how many people worked in Ireland this time last year? 2.3 million from memory. How many claimed PUP? less than 400,000 at the highest (again from memory)? This can be used to get some idea of the scale of hardship

On hospital appointments – do you have anything but wishful thinking on hospital appointment. Everyone I know had had their hospital appointment either in person or virtual and within a reasonable timescale. I do know some people who are seriously ill and these appointments went ahead. I am sure some are affected – but how many?

Ambulance services and critical care have continued.

Without the actions of the people supported by the government we could have 4,000 deaths when compared to Sweden efforts.. more recently we could have been having between 40 and 70 deaths a day with less measures or less compliance

I am afraid that many people have “wishful thinking” and “instinct”, actually we all have hopefully. But we need to look deeper to get the full picture and almost no country in Europe has been as successful in keeping deaths low the Irish people in following the Irish Government’s and Health Services rules and advice or are you one of the people who says “open everything up and let people die”?

@Niall Ó Cofaigh: Oh come on, Niall, you can do better than that. You’ve been one of the few with actually decent arguments and replies since this began, but showing the working vs claiming PUP as a show of hardship? So around 18% of the workforce have been affected to the point of needing PUP payment, means everyone else is grand, no hardship, right? And of ~108000 cases, ~2300 people have died, meaning only ~2.5% have endured hardship by Covid, right? Just an idea of the scale of hardship…

But just so I can include some anecdotal evidence of my own: One person I know had an exam delayed by around 8 months. Not to worry though, it was only for her heart. I’m sure that didn’t need to be checked quickly. I mean, who dies of heart problems? I know that’s just 1 person, but I’ve been limiting my contacts over the last year and I’m willing to bet there were plenty more in similar situations.

There’s absolutely no proof that we’d be seeing Sweden’s numbers or Italy’s or anywhere else’s numbers on the island of Ireland had we chosen any other approach. It may in future be proved that what we’re doing now was exactly right, but what bothers me is how little anyone is interested in how effective alternative approaches might be. There doesn’t even seem to have been feasibility studies for alternative approaches done. If there have been, it would help us all to know what they were and what the results were.

I was merely using the numbers as a counter argument to point out the ridiculousness of Niall’s argument. Saying “only 400,000″ or so people are on PUP and so its not that bad is the same as saying well only 2% of cases died, so I guess it’s not that bad. Both arguments completely fail to account for the wider damages being done and the real dangers either way.

Now we do, protect the vulnerable and open up everything. deaths are extremely low. The flu has been eradicated with not one death this year, more died if the flu last winter season than of covid this winter. Its good to hear everyone you know has had their hospital appointments. Unfortunately I cannot say the same, I know nobody that died from covid but my family alone have lost two relations from their cancelled apps that their cancer spread unnecessarily and another friend whos surgery was cancelled so many times that she is now in icu and the family have been told will not make it.

In education no plans have been made for the eventuality of another full lockdown. Leaving cert needs to be discussed. Its obvious from the figures that a large portion of the population are not adhering to the guidelines.
9 months restrictions and listening to the same message everday from nphet have took its toll . We are in lockdown #3 and people have had a bellyfull.
The best thing that can happen now is to roll this vaccine out as quickly as possible and let people get on with there lives.

At no point, however, have I seen anyone in Government, the HSE, NPHET mentioning this. It’s one major thing they could have gotten right, and an example of something as part of an alternative approach to lockdowns. But of course, we’re still seeing people saying “Well there’s no alternative to rolling lockdowns!! What’s YOUR solution??!”

@Paul Power: I keep hearing about all these teachers that are refusing to go to school, demanding this, that and the other, won’t teach online, think they are better than the rest of us etc etc.

The unions flew a kites at times that went down like lead balloon with the public and the teachers, who have never been ballotted on any of this.

Most of the anti-teacher rhetoric seems like a media construction and, worse, a construction by other forces who are more than happy with the teacher as devils scenario with a view to future pay talks.

The reality I deal with day to day is teachers who are very happy to be at work and are doing a great job ensuring kids are happy and safe.

Maybe we have been let down by our leadership and the department or maybe some members of the public will never, ever get over the fact that teachers were paid during the first lockdown while schools were closed. And of course there’s June and July.

I know lots of fellow teachers who find all the anti teacher stuff very stressful to deal with. I know I do. No matter what we do, all I ever hear is negative, ill-informed and very unfair criticism that has nothing to do with the vast majority of teachers who are trying to get on with their jobs.

As I said before, I’m stressed at the thought of having to teach from home with two kids under two at home with me for company but I’ll give it my very best as I have no intention of letting down my students.

Thanks for engaging and fingers crossed we get through this soon.

@Gary Kearney: Locking down for 6 weeks leading up to the Christmas period and then opening up for 3 weeks prior was always going to be a massive clusterfcck. With cases going down (finally) under level 3 it could have lead to cases lowering (it was already lowering before level 5 kicked in) while people prepared for Christmas over a much longer period. As it stands, NPHET ended up compressing months worth of lost business into 3 weeks of commercialised mayhem. How in God’s name they’re surprised with this surge is beyond me. But you see, this is the result of reacting to everything as opposed to putting plans in place to counter the worst possibilities. One knee-jerk reaction after another.

A year is an incredibly long time to give up most of the things that make life worth living. I dont know what they expected, after the most severe lockdown they open shops and restaurants 2 weeks before the busiest time of the year and expect people not to congregate. Even with the cases so high every day fortunately the deaths are very low. These days its our future after the fallout from this thats starting to get worrying

Or maybe it’s because the test is totally unreliable. Experts saying that at minimal 10 percent of readings are false positive. With that being the situation the more tests you have the more positive cases there will be.
We should not be using positive tests as a measurement of the virus numbers. The amount of hospitalisations and deaths should be used. It’s complete and utter scare mongering!

@Peter O Donoghue: there is always a lag and an increase of deaths won’t be seen for a few weeks. Also if cases are mainly in a younger age set this leads to fewer deaths thankfully

Well, you wouldn’t expect there to be a correlation yet. Bound to be at least two weeks before we start seeing deaths from these cases. We all hope we won’t see a corresponding jump in deaths in the next few weeks, but there’s a high chance we will.

@Peter O Donoghue: do you expect that people drop dead the minute they get it? The new case numbers a month ago were fairly consistant….as are the deaths are now. Project the current new case numbers to a month’s time and you are looking at an awful lot of deaths. But now that they have stopped testing close contacts, that ratio will get a lot worse. I hope to god I’m wrong, but as long as there are those like you misinforming people with the rubbish you come out with, I don’t think I will be.

2 Metrics from report which I assume under represent Reality but this is what the HSPC reports say

22370 cases 10 admitted to ICU over 14 days .
    ICU rate of 0.04% (0.0004)

    Symptoms 15.83% reported sypmtoms.

From the official reports it seems quite low illness per cases.

If this peak is due to pre Christmas , Christmas day there is room for optimism.

Also in theory no rush getting 110,000+ people vaccinated but could focus on healthcare staff that have not got it and Patients.
Could focus on Vaccine those that need it most.

Deaths from coronavirus seem to take quite a while, so it will probably be a few weeks before we start seeing the deaths from the current numbers. So you’d be worried at what the number of deaths will be like in two or three weeks time. Hoping I’m wrong and they’ll be lower than we fear.

It would be interesting to have a national roll out of the antibody tests at this stage , there could be up to 500k people already with anti body’s. It could save a lot of wasted vaccines if we got our program targeted at people without antibodies. These tests are quite inexpensive and could provide really helpful data.

It’s a bit disturbing how many people seem to want to have their lives controlled one way or another. I’m not questioning the efficacy of lockdowns by the way just the rather strange reactions some people have to them.
