THE WORLD IS still digesting yesterday’s unsavoury scenes in Washington DC when supporters of US President Donald Trump descended on the Capitol Building.
Newspapers in the United States and elsewhere have given their reaction.
The Washington Post says that Trump incited the crowds to “acts of insurrection, violence”.
The Wall Street Journal, a newspaper that has often been criticised for its perceived soft-touch coverage of Trump, writes, “Mob storms Capito.l”
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the US and the political divide, The San Francisco Chronicle simply labels the unrest as “Insurrection”.
The Miami Herald, a popular newspaper in Florida — a state won by Trump in last November’s election — goes with, “Chaos in DC.”
Owned by Rupert Murdoch, whose Fox News television network is a major source of support Trump, The Times reports, “US Capitol under siege.”
“Trump presidency careens towards end on violent final note,” is how business news website Bloomberg puts it this morning.

I do not envy the job Joe Biden has before him in trying to unite a nation torn apart by one man’s greed , grasp at power and no morals whatsoever . But the fault must also lie with the Republicans that allowed this man to get so out of control . I have no idea why he has not been arrested for inciting violence and anarchy !

Biden definitely has a tough job but Trump is a symptom, not the disease. The sooner Trump is gone the better, but the disease won’t go away until Americans start uniting and stop dividing themselves – on both sides of the aisle. Don’t get me wrong here, the Republicans need to denounce Trump and get him out ASAP and they need to answer for empowering him and giving him the platform.
That said, the only way they will move forward will be if they focus on stopping the constant identity politics, the rhetoric, the dialling up of the media, the 24/7 posting falsehoods (on both sides) on Social media and start listening to each other – right now there are 300 million Americans screaming at each other and no one listening.
Ireland is no better, just without the violence.

@Dave O’Keeffe: indeed the divide predates him. But not only did he exploit and deepen it as you rightly say, he did so by providing legitimacy to American fascist and nazi groups. Not by economic or social policies, or by waging an illegal war, all of which would have been bad enough. He went straight out to the most extreme places in that country and threw open his arms to the violent racist sociopaths and psychopaths, all of whom have a primitive understanding of society, politics and civility. And they hate people who are different in any way. Thankfully their number is relatively small. There are not 70 million of them but enough to do what they did yesterday

@Brian Dunne: not sure, some see this as the ‘American Spring’. And why not? If it happens in other countries we do not identify with so much it is applauded. There is a systematic failure in US and big issue I see is corporatism and few media oligopoly type companies having stranglehold on society. This has ousted a lot of people. Likes of google, twitter and facebook will be the detrimental in many countries I think if they continue censoring and controlling what opinion is acceptable. Its apparatus is totalitarian like since it steers towards a very narrow stratum of acceptable opinion.
And people will raise up. And I cant agree with them.

“The people” voted by over 7 million more votes to put Trump out of office and in the highest numbers ever to elect Joe Biden and yet, you have the audacity to suggest what happened in DC yesterday as some sort of “revolution”.
The fact you’re using social media, that has had a clearly detrimental affect on the prevelance of nonsense conspiracy theories, is such a clear projection.

It seems anything you do not agree with you brand as ‘nonsense conspiracy theories’. I dont. I am actually not a Trump supporter. I am left of Biden. But I do see what is going on and that is that Trump and its supporters have been attacked from the start by the media outlets and technology outlets of the big 4. But I know that since you saw yesterday a revolution (attempt to overturn) you say, the censorship of acceptable opinion will pretty not been noticed by you. And with you by many others. All seems fine when your ideas are chosen, but one day they might not.

Shut down debate, shut it down. For future debate you might have, pls actually try understand arguments of other side. Instead of staying within your bias. Liberating. The place to talk about its legitimacy is court. They couldn’t produce any evidence their. This was the next step. Rudy Giuliani yesterday at the rally in DC called for trial by combat. After yesterday 147 Republicans still objected to the results during the process.

I mean, many on the far left (e.g. antifa) dismiss any law and get a soft ride from media. On the spectrum there is a point where society is so dysfunctional that one can choose not too accept the courts. Happened many times in history. I think there are many many cases where I as an individual would have chosen not too accept the mantra that court is holy. E.g. many murder cases in US where black people have been prosecuted unfairly.

@Raymond Scott: when you first choose the courts and then choose to ignore them you can’t claim the dysfunction is the courts fault. I’ve also never said that court is holy just that there are constitutional remedies if you have evidence. Yesterday’s actions were those of a people without evidence.

I also object to the characterisation of the woman as a young girl, she was a 35 year old Air Force veteran with an extremist ideology. Her job in the Air Force for several years was to protect bases. She was definitely aware of what would happen.

This is exactly what Trump wanted to happen. I am sure he is rubbing his hands in glee telling anyone who will listen “look at what these people will do for me, i am the most powerful man in the world” . America is so divided that things will get worse before they get better.
Trump should be removed from office now.. definitely enough reasons to arrest him.

@#1 Fifthwheel: Can’t arrest him whilst in office (well, they could try but it’s unlikely to succeed) but he can be removed using the 25th Amendment (needs Pence and the majority of the Cabinets agreement) or impeached and found guilty in a Senate trial.
I think there should be another election to clear everything up then no one can complain about fraud.

While what happened in Washington has to be condemned it’s worth noting that this attempted coup is the first America has been subject to. However America itself has been very active since the end of the second war in organizing coups and civil unrest in dozens of countries across the world. The loss of life, mayhem, destruction and creation of millions of refugees is hardly ever heard of in the main stream media except when it wants to demonize those traumatized refugees. What goes around as they say comes around.

Politics in America has been corrupt for years same as here. People have woken up and seen it for what it is. It is a fractured country with a hell of a lot of problems, divisions widening, and people becoming more politically aware. But a fractured country divides the people and suits corrupt governments. God help them if the people unite.
