BORIS JOHNSON HAS scrapped the UK’s travel corridors, meaning arrivals from every country must self-isolate for at least five days.
He told the Downing Street press conference that the measure is in response to the rollout of coronavirus vaccines and the discovery of new strains of the virus.
He said: “It’s precisely because we have the hope of that vaccine and the risk of new strains coming from overseas that we must take additional steps now to stop those strains from entering the country.
“Yesterday we announced that we’re banning flights from South America and Portugal and to protect us against the risk from as-yet-unidentified strains we will also temporarily close all travel corridors from 4am on Monday.”
People arriving in the UK from a destination with a travel corridor are currently exempt from the 10-day quarantine requirement.
The new policy means arrivals from every destination will need to self-isolate for 10 days, or receive a negative result from a coronavirus test taken at least five days after they enter the UK.
It had already been announced that travellers arriving in England and Scotland from Monday will need to have a negative test taken up to 72 hours before leaving the country of departure.
Tim Alderslade, chief executive of trade body Airlines UK, said travel corridors were a “lifeline” for the travel industry when they were introduced in summer 2020.
He acknowledged that “things change” and it is the correct decision to remove them, but added that restrictions should be eased again “when it is safe to do so”.
Joss Croft, chief executive of inbound tourism body UKinbound, said: “Consumer safety is paramount and although the removal of all travel corridors is regrettable, given the current trajectory of the virus it’s an understandable decision.”

@Colm Walsh: & yet without those two we wouldn’t have a vaccine because they through the kitchen sink at all the drug companies & didn’t hedge their bets they were placing orders with all the candidate vaccine makers while the EU was being pushed by Macron to back the French effort which still hasn’t come to the party. The EU has placed orders but is in a queue behind those that coughed up first. Israel didn’t ask how much will it cost instead it asked how much can you manufacture & they are now best in class.
@Joe Thorpe: So a private drugs company researches the vaccine and you want to credit that to Trump and Boris? All they did was spend taxpayers money on the vaccine, its hardly Teedledumb and Tweedledumber finding the vaccine themselves
@Joe Thorpe: sorry Joe but “throwing the kitchen sink” at something is their only option now because they made a complete bo11ox of everything since last March. Weak leadership and indecision in those countries has ultimately cost thousands of lives with more loss on the horizon. Pharma has bailed them out of a situation they made worse so they’re going all in or bust. As for Israel…. its easy to get to the front of the que as long as sugar daddy USA is writing the cheques.

@Adam J: They wouldn’t have spent billions of their money on these vaccines unless someone was going to buy the end result. Trump & Boris paid vast amounts upfront on all these vaccine companies regardless of them producing a viable product. These companies wouldn’t have done the research without the money, they gave them the money to do what we needed them to do so they also got the first bite of the cherry. Now the world is in a competition to get their hands on these limited supplies & as for the dope that said Israel have robbed their supplies off the Palestinians, don’t make me laugh some of these mad mullah led nations don’t want anything to do with a vaccine produced by the evil Satan’s of the west & Ayatollah Khomeini has placed a ban on the imports of these drugs, they’d sooner see their ravaged populations die than admit they need anything from the civilised members of the human race.
