Half of fifth and sixth year pupils experiencing 'major negative' impact on learning due to Covid-19

The findings are contained in the CSO’s latest ‘Social Impact of Covid-19 Survey’.

ALMOST HALF OF people with a child at Leaving Cert level have told the Central Statistics Office that the closure of schools due to Covid-19 has had a “major negative” impact on their child’s learning.

The latest findings from the CSO’s series ‘Social Impact of Covid-19 Survey’ also show that over a third of parents with a child in secondary school believe the enforced closure of schools has had a “major negative” impact on their child’s learning.

According to the survey, 47.9% of respondents with a child in fifth or sixth year told the CSO that ongoing school closures have had a “major negative” impact on their learning.

The figure falls to 33.6% for all respondents who had a child at second level, with the rate falling to 14.8% for parents with children at primary level.

The survey highlights the overall impact that school closures have had on students’ learning and social development.

Around one in three (33.6%) respondents with a child in secondary school said that closures have had a “major negative” impact on their child’s social development.

The rate for respondents with a child in primary school is one in five (20.9%).

Schools initially shut from March to August last year, when the first wave of Covid-19 in Ireland led to the closure of education settings.

Although schools re-opened in September to December, they stayed closed after Christmas in response to the third wave of the virus.

Sixth year students in secondary school and primary school pupils from junior infants to second class are set to return from next Monday, with a gradual re-opening for children in other classes and years in the weeks afterwards.

The CSO survey also shows how parents believe that their children are spending more time learning at home compared with the initial shutting of schools last year.

During the first enforced closure period from March to June 2020, three in ten (29.9%) people with a child in secondary school reported that their child spent five hours or more per day on learning activities provided by their secondary school.

However, the comparable rate for 2021 has risen to almost seven in ten (69.0%).

Meanwhile, seven in ten (70.3%) adults who are employed and who have a child in primary school have reported that the closure of primary schools since Christmas has had an impact on their work pattern.

And almost three in ten (28.4%) respondents who are employed and who have a child in primary school told the CSO that they are working the same hours but disjointed throughout the day or week.

The survey was carried out using an online electronic questionnaire, with a sample size of 1,621 people.

Is it not Owen Keegan who is responsible? The same fella who wants to narrow the quays down to one lane to fit in the cyclists.. The same fella who got a roundabout dug up and rebuilt twice in Killiney at the costs of hundreds of thousands because he made it that cyclists had the right of way which caused numerous accidents.. This lad is a complete idiot and now the City is down to the tune of 250 million because he messed this up as well.. He’ll probably be Taoichach in years to come

But when rules and laws are made… They should followed and enforced.

When Croke Park wanted to upgrade its facility the residents objected to the new size of the stadium and that it would be able to hold concerts. As part of the planning to go ahead GAA promised the residents that they would not allow any more than 3 concerts in a single year.. so how are the residents to blame, if it was not for the agreement Croke Park would not have had is upgrade.

What would represent a ”shambles” would be if we allowed some flouncing cowboy who doesn’t consider it worth his while to play 3 concerts to nearly a quarter of a million punters, and his local promoter who can only see dollar signs, to dictate the terms on our planning policy. It’s them who’ve thrown the rattle out of the pram ultimately.About bloody time we had some proper regulation on thee things.

I know a lot of people will be mocking and jeering the people that camped for 2 days and have paid in advance for hotel stays, but at the same time it’s totally unfair for them (not me personally) to have gone through that for nothing! And what about the huge boost to the economy? And the 70,000 foreign ticket holders?! And how bad it bloody looks to future big stars who were contemplating coming to gig in Ireland. Overall, I think it’s made us look pretty crap as a nation and I’m kind of embarrassed!! I’m also really pissed off that he wouldn’t just do the original 3 gigs. Beaurocracy, ego & greed have a whole lot to answer for here!!

It would have made us look pretty crap if a singer could hold the country hostage and force the government to overturn legislation and planning laws with his “5 concerts or none”.

The blame here lies squarely with Aiken and Brooks who were happy to sell tickets for events they
    a) did not have permission for
    b) would have known that they were breaking the rules for Croke park as there had already been 3 concerts.

They played a high risk game looking for permission close to the event and then holding a gun to everyone’s head “but we sold the tickets already”. I hope Aiken take a huge financial hit on this now.

The planning systems are at fault here. An event licence like this can only be applied for on the tenth week before the event takes place. There has never been a licence for a major event like this turned down in the history of the state. It took DCC the remaind er r of the time to give a descision. If it were a sensible organisation making a sound commercial descision then all 5 would go ahead. Unfortunately this is a case of unelected rubberstampers following the letter of the law without due consideration to the spirit of it. And the Dublin people they are supposed to serve now pay a pretty hefty price

That’s the problem some tool in a job that he/she cant do! The country is full of them! It’s very easy for all of us to pick our sides now and divert the blame. Lets all pick a side and fight about it between ourselves. Anyway never fear there will be something different to argue about next week and the week after and the week after that because there’s a good few years to go before all the toolbag decision makers are weeded out.

The fans have been let down by aiken and brooks, but I blame Aiken primarily. Greed, plain and simple, and it backfired to the detriment of 400,000 ordinary people.

As far as I am aware, Croke Park are allowed 3 concerts per year. Any concert by Garth Brooks was over the 2014 allowance as One Direction held 3 concerts there this year.
My question is, if DCC were willing to allow 3 go ahead, which is 100% more the the yearly quota, then what the flip was wrong with 5?? Even 1 was too darn many according to themselves!!
Feckin’ eejets. They were clearly breaking their own rules allowing one, two or three dates to go ahead so what made them chicken out over four and five???

You say it’s madness how the minority ruled over the majority, it would have been madder still had some plastic cowboy managed to rule over a country’s laws. The agreement was in place, they should have tackled that first instead of assuming the residents would buckle under the pressure. It’s absolutely disgusting to suggest that they should be denied funding for their area just because they didn’t bend the knee to Garth Brooks

I actually don’t think this the worst representation of Ireland, it’s a terrible indictment of Peter Aiken and Garth Brooks who just saw dollar bills signs in front of their eyes. They sold the tickets knowing they were breaking the rules, complaints were made and they didn’t get their licence. I think the villains here are Aiken and Brooks themselves, they are friends and I’ve no doubt he was whispering nothing but cash-money into his ear.

Glad to see the law upheld for once. It took guts for the city manager in the face of so much opposition.
Glad we won’t have to spend money staying away from home during the shows since they disturb my disabled adult son. My family is here since ’26, long before any potential concerts.

It’s disapointing for fans but blame where it’s due. The tickets were sold without approval which was only sought in April, almost as an after thought.
Brooks could have played his concerts but decided to disapoint the fans who could have seen him instead. This is not a reflection of the Irish in a negative way. It reflects badly on the promoter and Brooks. They thought they were above the planning laws and the rights of residents to live without the disturbance 8 shows in 1 year causes. They gambled and lost.

…and so it came to pass that Enda, the leader, travelled to the Americas, cap in hand, to ask them for help for his small nation. Garth Brooks, an outstanding country artist in his field, answered Ireland’s call. The small Irish nation rushed to support Garth’s efforts and responded in record time…..and the people knew they could sing their little hearts out for five nights forgetting the doom and gloom of the last five years. But the wicked men in the council did not want to help Enda and all his efforts, nor did they want the little people of Ireland to forget the austerity measures for five consecutive nights so they said no and blamed a small group of residents on the whole fiasco, then they blamed Garth ‘cos he wouldn’t choose one person over the other, he wanted everyone to have a break and for one night everyone there would not be worrying “If tomorrow never comes”…..

It’s absolutely ridiculous – when the additional concerts were announced and before the tickets went on sale was the time to say no, then when the license application went in 2 months ago there could have been a discussion but to leave it until 2 weeks before the run was due to start is insane -I respect that there is a deal in place for no more than 3 gigs per year so one has to assume the Croke Park authorities, knowing they had already booked 1D had some kind of strategy but then to take into account the objections of less than 2% of the populus (though apparently up to 100 of the 370 objections are fake) over the majority of residents and the 400000 people who had paid good money and were prepared to pay more in good faith beggars belief. Over 70000 people were due to fly in from across the globe which would have enhanced Irelands reputation as a tourist destination and brought in vast sums of money for the economy – those people will now be out of pocket – though I’m sure the airlines and hotels will be laughing at all the free money they’ve made. I love Ireland but this fiasco has made the country a laughing stock – one of the biggest artists in the world decides to make a comeback after 15 years and wants to do that in Ireland and this is how it goes….as I said beggars belief. I had tickets for the Monday night and flights and transfers booked and paid for – thanks for nothing Dublin

First – I could not care less if he perform or not.
It’s all about Greed. I find it hard to believe that 1 individual can hold a country at ransom.
Just goes to show, that the comments made by each one of these stars “I love Ireland”, “I always wanted to perform here” or “My fans is important to me” is just a PR stunt. Ironically all the die hard fans falls for this each time. Rather than boycotting him, they will still follow and flock to his concerts even if it’s next year.

Flip side of the coin is that if you break laws or guidelines, you have to face the consequences and cannot expect that these be changed just because it suits you.

Could have been a great opportunity for income generation and possibly a few jobs as well if this was planned correctly and Greed was not the only driver.

This country is a disgrace! 400,000 people have been left without their concert over 40 pensioners who live around Croker. Nevermind the 70000 people who were coming from abroad! I think a lot of these people should take legal action against Aiken promotions and these 40 pensioners for their losses… We had 4 tickets and personally am very disappointed as I’ve been waiting to see Garth Brooks live my entire life.

I’m just in awe at how the residents around croke park, Dublin City council, the government of Ireland and everyone else involved can just sit back and watch these concerts (bringing €15+ million to our economy!) be cancelled. This is really just another f**k up that the Irish Government can add to their long long list. What’s next lads?

Even if it was one pensioner, when you live in a supposed democracy you’re not supposed to ignore the rights of a citizen just so some higher-ups can make some cash. Justice was served when the two gigs were cancelled and now Brooks has cancelled the other three that’s his own issue.

There are multiple parties to blame in this. The GAA never should have agreed to 5 concerts when one direction had already played three. They knew they were in breach of their agreements. Aiken were warned by the council that 5 was too many. Brooks claim that it was all or none is ludicrous. The original plan had been for 2. He is being a diva refusing to play the 3. It was greed on the part of Aiken, Brooks and GAA. The residents aren’t innocent either. There are rumours of forged signatures on the petition against the concerts and forged submissions on the licence.

The council are probably the least to blame. They were bound by their remit under the Planning and Development Act (ammended) 2000 – 2013. They are obliged to protect the residential amenity of the area and economic considerations can’t enter into it. Once they made that decision they couldn’t by law overturn it. Disregarding planning law when it suits has caused this country enough problems.

That being said it is clear the licensing law should be reformed. There should be an appeal process and tickets shouldn’t be allowed to be sold until a licence is granted.

After so many years of Ireland being in the news for the wrong reasons, we finally have a chance to shine, in that the biggest country star in the world choose this little island to stage one of the greatest comeback concerts of all time, and 5 or 6 idiots sitting in a Dublin council have made a decision that will cost the economy 11 million euros, supply extra business to all the hotels, bars and restaurants as 400,000 people arrive over 5 days. I often wondered why the world always thought the Irish people were stupid, now we know, its because we let idiots make stupid decisions for us.

Ireland’s reputation may well be enhanced for not blindly allowing the sledge hammer tactics of the GAA, Promoters and the Brooks organisation to impose their will on the Nation. Of course, it’s possible that the world outside of Ireland couldn’t care less. I don’t believe that the music loving population will be too upset either.

The GAA should be regarded as the main culprits, as it seems that their senior management are prepared to go to extreme lengths to cash in on the sport and the facilities which the people of Ireland paid for – directly or indirectly.

If the council was already ignoring the original agreement of 3 per year then why not allow all 5 dates go ahead?

Not for the first time in Ireland has bad planning, organising and coordinating between private and public bodies messed up a good business opportunity for our country.

On this occasion, however, one cannot find fault with actions of public bodies involved here, and democratically elected and entrusted to maintain order and fairness in our society and uphold the rights of individual citizens and communities.

Garth and Akins Promotions, in hindsight, should have arranged 2 concerts for Dublin, and spread the remainder evenly in venues throughout the Island to absorb demand.

Expensive lessons learnt for the future, I think.

I can understand why Garth didn’t want to just perform three, it may be down to money but it might also be that he didn’t want the other fans to miss out, and also he should have been informed about the law about three concerts a year, things like that should be informed to artists before they book the venue for their tour, it’s not all Garth’s fault like some people will believe, it’s actually mostly all this country’s fault, only in this country does this sort of idiocy run riot, nothing will be learned and it will happen yet again in the near future, the amount of money our economy would have got from tourists attending his concert would have been a great help but I think the governments want people to suffer the after math of the recession for as long as possible.

the blame for this fiasco – that is what it is, a total fiasco – lies squarely with the management company. Who on earth announces a series of concerts, knowing they will sell out, sell thousands of expensive tickets, BEFORE seeking the licence for the venue, which they then leave until almost concert time? Easy to blame the residents, Dublin council or even Garth. The truth is, everyone was misled by the management company. EVERYONE.

All tickets were sold “subject to license” people with tickets for the 25th, 26th, & 27th can sue Aiken promotions for flights, accom and emotional distress. They can do so because these concerts were granted license but were cancelled by the vendor (Brooks) for no reason (we wanted to play two more gigs) is not a valid reason. Those with tickets for the two concerts not granted license can claim a refund of the ticket price but no more. This will end up costing Aiken and Brooks a lot more than if they had just played the three concerts.

If it was greed on Garth Brooks part he would still have made a lot of money on 3 concerts. Garth seems tome to be a genuine guy. He gave up on ten years performing and many millions to look after his kids. Greed is not on his radar. I think he was genuinely upset at the refusal to grant permission for the 5 concerts. Dublin has been given a black eye and it’s people are out all the concert and ancillary business and revenue that the concert would have brought with it. It’s nice that the interests of a few dozen moaning residents can be a killjoy for 400,000 + people. If they don’t like living near the park that was there before any of them, they have the option to move. Shame on the City Manager for not looking after the many who might have needed the ancillary business from the concerts to survive these tough times.

I am absolutely devastated about this. Five months of waiting all for nothing. I hope the people behind this campaign are happy. 400,000 people let down just as the concerts were about to take place. Many of us queued for nights to get these tickets
and waited seventeen years to see Garth Brooks play. As it stands the credibility for Ireland as a country that can host events like this is gone. I am sickened by the whole sorry mess, and am embarrassed to be Irish at the incompetency of the whole thing.

The reality is that it was sheer incompetency all around… However, the actions of some of the residents leaves a sour taste in my mouth, as does the actions of the city manager. After initially letting one direction break the rule anyway, he chooses to kick up now? With this much a. Money and b. enthusiasm at stake. He should have bit his lip and resolved to change this scenario after it.
I hope they discover fraudulent signatures on that petition, that will rob any credibility those bunch of idiots have and lessen their ability to f*^k up any future sporting events, a World Cup bid in particular.

While I do understand that the rights of a minority are important, I also understand that the overarching view of the government should be that the welfare of majority is more important, which this injection of cash would have helped as well as promoting Ireland’s ability to cater for huge events

Finally, f*^k you enda Kenny for coming up with this pathetic horseshit about what a tragedy it was. Get involved instead of hiding until it’s over.

This is just typical of Ireland and the GAA it is clear that the GAA gave permission for these concerts to go ahead otherwise the tickets could not be sold and now the GAA are turning it around on everyone else except them, it is just discussing what is going on. Garth is 100% right it should be ALL 5 or none, its hard enough to except this but it would be a nightmare if only 3 goes ahead.
