Poll: Have you noticed more litter in your area during lockdown?

Fine Gael Senator Regina Doherty recently hit out at the “phenomenal” amount of dog faeces in Irish villages.

AS LOCKDOWN ROLLS on and people get out and about more there has been commentary recently about what local amenity measures should be put in place heading into Spring and Summer.

Dublin City Council said last week that it continues to experience “unprecedented and extraordinary” levels of illegal dumping since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Writing for TheJournal.ie today, Rory McNab has spoken about his experience cleaning up litter during the pandemic.

“Spurred on by the sort of geographical Stockholm syndrome engendered by travel restrictions and a noticeable increase in the volume of rubbish appearing in the canal – particularly disposable masks and coffee cups – I pledged to take action.”

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Senator Regina Doherty recently hit out at the “phenomenal” amount of dog faeces in Irish villages.

As Level 5 continues and as we face into brighter days outside, we want to know: Have you noticed more litter in your area during lockdown?

Poll Results:

Just as a cynical angle, it’s a win win for the zukerbergs. They get to choose how they distribute their wealth as shares are sold off over decades as they get a tax relief/exemption on the money. Mini lady zukerberg as CEO of the foundation gets to do whatever she wants with the inheritance, be it pick up rubbish on the beaches of Thailand or save the monkeys in south america while on a substantial wage. I can’t really find fault as at least the money is going to good use and not sitting on deposit somewhere or lost in government budgets in military operations.

Correction, I’ve since discovered that Facebook has never paid out dividend on its shares. So definitely cynical now. So rather than sell the shares and pay tax he gifts them to a charity that he runs and low and behold as CEO of Facebook decides to pay dividend on shares. Hymmmm, I could do with a new headquarters for my charity in Monaco and perhaps an island or two for my monkey sanctuary.

Why? The guy started a company and service that over a billion people and a countless number of businesses use to network. It can be annoying at times but it’s still one of the most popular websites in the world?

He shouldn’t be paid for creating and running this service? If a restaurant opens and the owner is successful and establishes a franchise should they not be paid for that? Being rich based on your own achievements is not something that should be criticised. He’s an entrepreneur who is insanely successful and deserves everything he’s worked hard for.

You do know he has given millions to charities, set up charities, schools, hiv clinics for babies etc I could go on..and just because he doesnt shout about it you are one of many that will call him a pox. He and the rest of U2 pay the same taxes as us here in Ireland, they are Ireland domiciles..not like some others. Also, why arent you calling zuckerbug up …he’s made a mint from a large majority of yous..keeps making that mint..gives a token donation away in his daughters name and its all cutsie..by the time his daughter is 18, she’ll be more than minted

Just on that Jenni – re taxes -

Domiciles do not pay the same taxes as irish residents. So it isn’t correct to say they pay the same taxes here.

Irish resident and domiciled individuals pay tax on their worldwide income.

Domiciles only pay tax on Irish source income. They may, in some cases also be liable for the domicile levy but there is a big difference between worldwide income and Irish source income.

the fact is the company pays little or no corporate tax in most places it operates. That has some bearing on the profitability of the company which has some bearing on his personal wealth.

I’m not judging the morality of it but I am asking if it is better to allow wealth creation to be facilitated through tax avoidance and then use the wealth created to address some of the problems caused by a lack of public funds.
