More than 80% of people to be offered first vaccine dose by the end of June, says Tánaiste

The Tánaiste says he hopes government can do better than the September target.

TÁNAISTE LEO VARADKAR has said he expects more than 80% of people will be offered their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine by the end of June.

Speaking at tonight’s Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting, he told TDs and senators that he believes the September vaccination target can be met, but hopes we can do better than that.

The meeting heard, if approved by the European Medicines Agency on 11 March, the  single dose Johnson&Johnson vaccine will be in deployed in the country in April.

It is hoped that the government will be able to inform people reliably by the end of the month when they can expect to get their jab, the meeting was told.

The Tánaiste also addressed concerns that were raised in relation to recent vaccine targets not being met.

The HSE failed to hit the Government’s target of administering 100,000 vaccine doses last week due to delivery issues with the AstraZeneca dose.

The Taoiseach told the Dáil today: “The company believes that shortfall will be made up in the next week and will come through.”

Varadkar said the missed target was outside of the Government’s control as it was down to an AstraZeneca order not being met. He said this will happen from time to time but targets will be exceeded in other weeks.

The Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting also heard from Brendan Smith and Dara Calleary over missed target concerns, however it is understood that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly was not at the meeting this evening.

Due to Donnelly’s absence, Calleary is understood to have asked for the issue be tabled to be a specific agenda item next week. He also raised concerns with the Taoiseach about GPs only being contacted now about housebound patients two months into the vaccine roll out, stating there is confusion among GPs.

The Taoiseach said he would speak to the HSE boss Paul Reid about finding urgent solutions.

He said he had been in direct contact with the HSE on a dedicated line to respond to queries regarding the vaccine rollout and to assist with queries from GPs .

Micheál Martin also said a package of supports will be developed for young people many of whom have been impacted by the pandemic.

Regarding Bank of Ireland closing branches across the country, which a number of TDs have raised concerns about in the Dáil today and its impact on rural Ireland, Varadkar said it could create opportunities for some landmark buildings in towns and villages nationwide to potentially be used for other purposes for their local communities.

The Taoiseach also told members that the unilateral move by the UK government on the Northern Ireland Protocol is”unhelpful and a cause for concern”.

“We need to work through the issues in a calm way,” he said.

Varadkar is also understood to “not have held back” when discussing the matter of a Green Party TD launching a High Court challenge against the government’s plans to sign up to the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (Ceta).

Patrick Costello, TD for Dublin South Central, told his party on Monday evening that he had lodged proceedings.

The Tánaiste said he views it to be as serious, if not more so, than a government TD voting against the coalition in the Dáil.

He said he has discussed the matter with Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, telling Fine Gael members this evening that he can not think of another time that such an issue has arisen.

The Taoiseach also spoke about the issue of illegal adoption, which is being featured in an RTÉ Prime Time Investigates programme this evening. He said the cases are “shocking”.

“We will ensure those affected are helped and supported. It is critical that they have access to their identity and we are advancing the information tracing legislation as a priority,” he said, stating that Heads of Bill are expected at the end of this month.

I’m so glad my major socialising days are finished with the exception of the odd gig a few times a year. You need to have seriously deep pockets to have a big night out now. We weren’t rich in the 90s by any stretch but there were ways and means. Many a loan when someone was relatively flush after being paid and the favour reciprocated when the situation was reversed on another night. Now it’s just eye watering.

The fact that Dublin isn’t a pleasant place to be anymore makes the price gouging even more infuriating. They’re charging glamorous destination or celeb haunt prices to be out in a city that’s very hard to relax in. Supermarket or offie beers in the house with friends and good music is the way to go for many now. Total and utter rip off.

Time to start staying in! Was recently in Spain with work, bought a bottle of wine in a restaurant for €6.75! We are being absolutely fleeced in this country!!!!! Where is the money actually going!!! I’d love to see some forensic accountants brought into Leinster House to expose the shenanigans going on with our money! I’m sure it wouldn’t be as near controversial as what’s currently going on at RTE!!!!

@Fr. Todd Uncious: There is one thing that the Government can do that would help bring down costs quite a bit but they are only tinkering around the edges with. And that is the payout on compensation claims. Why are payouts so ridiculously high here compared to other countries? Every day I read about crazy payouts, and where do you think this money is coming from? It’s from me, you and businesses that are paying exhorbatant rates. The Government will say that insurance payouts have come down, yes they have by a small amount, but are still way too high. There are loads of people out there making a living off false claims. I have read multiple reports of criminals, stating that their money was got from compensation claims. It’s absolutely ridiculous and I cannot understand how they Government allow this. They are encouraging people to be dishonest by giving crazy payouts.

Change from ten euro for two pints of lager and two brandys and gingers in a local pub. Easy to know Diageo weren’t calling the shots, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Outside the last Brewery increase ..When the pubs reopened twice after lockdown the publicans increased the price of the pint when they reopened. You then had the Brewery increase. This increase of 4c plus Vat means the pubs will also add on to the increase to keep their margins…10c will probably be the increase…The government took away minium pricing in off licences and Supermarkets and put the increased cost into the profits of the above..The same politicians who tells us how shocked they are about price gouging…Sweet Jesus what a nation of fools we are.

Young people aren’t drinking as much as previous generations and certainly not in pubs. There’s been so much speculation as to why, shifting cultural attitudes, dating apps etc, but the reality I would think is young people simply can not afford it.

To me rather than Diageos costs excuse, this is seemingly their solution to compensate for that. Pure greed, these constant price hikes are going to drive even more young people away from pubs in the long run, while gouging older people who for lack of a better phrase, know no other way. Same goes for the pubs to. This is not going to work out well for them in the long run, short term gain, long term pain, mark my words and boy will they deserve it.

@Zim Zimma: Drinking the way we used to is finished, pubs that don’t serve food will continue to disappear, cost is a factor but the overarching one in young people is awareness, it’s just not good for you, there are ‘healthier’ ways to party, but we’re not exactly read to talk about that, recent ‘councils and open forums’ aside. Business will keep businessing tho, sinking ship for Diageo, 0.0% will only float for so long. Hungry Hungry Hippos. Its a shame, the pub was more than a place to drink, see it in the local town, 1 of the 4 pubs is left (old man type hole in the wall kip). Young people have literally no where to go to meet up, one coffee shop that closes at 4, no one will care tho, sh!t€ standards.

You’ll need mortgage approval to enter a pub in Ireland eventually. Even the most rural pubs are asking for 6 euro a pint in places. God only knows what beer in Dublin City will become. It’s even getting expensive to drink at home on a Friday or Saturday night. A bottle of wine and six cans of beer in tesco can be 35 euro, plus the takeaway with your partner another 30 to 40. A night in now will be heading for near 100 euro… Zombies who work and go to bed. That’s what half of this country will be in years to come while the other wealthy half laugh at them.

For me, drinking at home is grim and the antithesis of socialising. I don’t need alcohol that bad. I’ll continue to go out, meet friends, acquaintances and strangers t but I do have my haunts that remain relatively reasonably priced. A 25% increase in coke (not the drink) consumption reported in the UK and I imagine the cost of living is contributing to this (and a heightened sense of living for today, since tomorrow seems increasingly insurmountable for much of the younger folk).

€2 euro for a splash out of a a gun that they pour in to your spirit in a Swords hotel. Absolute rip off never mind the price of a pint. Its just carbonated muck they charge €2 for. I bet you in a few months customers will desert the place in droves with the prices they charge.

4c means about 20c added for the pub, nothing but robbery plain and simple there’s no need for drink to be so expensive here, in algarve few years ago 50c for a pint, most expensive was 4€ it’ll be 10€ soon for 1 pint here…Jesus wept…thankfully I drink at home these weekends, only way to hurt them is stop buying it, when people continue to buy over priced drink it’s give them the green light to keep putting it up

Complaining would only be effective on a mass scale and you’re never going to get all or even the majority of punters to boycott a pub

If you paid the extortionate prices into the Forever Young tribute acts and €8 for a pint, then the only ones who are loaded are you and the ppl at the gig.

All the giving out about the price of a pint or eating put. Cant compare prices with Spain and Portugal, staff are on a fraction of the wages in Dublin. Also people are demanding money for better health care, better roads, better pay for nursers ,doctors civil servants, do people think that money grows on trees somewhere.
And do mention our fiscal surplus , which could disappear tomorrow if the multi nationals decide to go else where.
People should compare prices with Madrid in Spain or anywhere in France , Switzerland Belgium , Germany Sweden etc.
I bought two pints in Nice last year which were more expensive than Dublin.
Still doesn’t make Diagos price hike right , simple though, buy another brand of stout

As for the rest of your ridiculous argument about paying for doctors, nurses and roads, we’re taxed to the eyeballs, the government is awash with money but would prefer to waste it on other vanity projects.

If the publican puts it up 10c and you have 10 pints…you’ll be out €1.00. I absolutely understand its not nice to see things going up but if you’re stuck for €1.00 because you can’t fill the childrens lunch boxes or get diesel for the car then stay out of the pub. It’s a luxury. If you dropped ten 10c coins on the ground, the chances are you wouldn’t bother picking them all up. Again, I’m totally aware it’s more than the 10c, it’s the principle and there have been lots of increases etc. recently. To almost completely contradict myself then.. Shame on diageo and Guinness and whoever else… They make plenty.
