IRISH AIRLINE RYANAIR has reported a €40 million drop in quarterly profits for the three months to the end of June in its latest results.
Its profit after tax is €99 million, down nearly 30 per cent compared to the same time last year when profits were €139 million with the airline saying that fuel costs rose by 27 per cent over the year.
Revenues were up by 11 per cent to €1.284 billion while passenger numbers also rose to 22.5 million, a six per cent rise on the same period last year.
Quarter one yield increases were dampened by recession in the European Union, austerity measures, and heavily discounted fares at the airline’s new base launches in Cyprus, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, provincial areas of UK and Spain, the airline said.
“Currently, we have no visibility of next winter’s yields but expect that continuing austerity, EU recession, and lower yields at new bases will to restrain fare growth,” chief executive Michael O’Leary said.
Full year traffic is expected to grow by 4 per cent, the airline said.
Ryanair recently made a cash offer of €1.30 per share for the just over 70 per cent of Aer Lingus that it does not already own. Aer Lingus has told its shareholders that the offer should be rejected.
Ryanair has declined to comment on the share offer in its latest results.

It’s the American Airlines of Europe. Just horrible. You can have value AND be treated fairly too but it’s not about the customer. It’s only about profit. They would use cattle trucks to make another euro if they could.
You’ve clearly never flow first class on American or even economy on a triple 7 (Yes that dingy 767 on Dub-Ord or those MD80s are shite) but if you’re comparing American to RottenAir… You’re mistaken

Having flown with both airlines my opinion based on my own experiences is valid. I’m not sure where you’re going with this first class thing. Good luck with it though
Flew first classBA & AA to Hawaii via Chicago. AA were alright but Economy passengers were being handed doggy bags at the gate for the flight which I thought appalling. BA on the other hand were exceptional.

Spot on Rodrigo, I know a guy flying for them, he is on contract and treated like shit. They literally charge you for your coffee and will only supply hot water free if you want to make your own. Attitude to Staff comes from the top.
seems 22.5 Million people saw Ryanair as best value for money in the period so they must be doing something right. Used them loads of times and never had an issue.
Affordable does not necessarily equate to value for money.
the fact that Ryanair profits are down means their making much less profit per customer (and way less PPC than aer lingus) this equates to value for money…

I do Joey… It’s a false economy, If I commit to paying for something that costs €60 and then turn up and there’s €40 of fees/surcharges and levies because I it’s the second Tuesday of the month and I didn’t pack a asymmetrical carry on, in an approved suitcase color and weight divisible by 2.3…. I’m far more pissed off than if I was told up front and honestly than if Aer Lingus or Bmi would charge €110… Especially when they use the base line fare to rationalize treating people like cattle…

Ryanair is one big farce.
If you took away the subsidies they would struggle to make a profit.
If they had to pay the minimum wage they would be loosing money.

Ironically, they are the most subsidised airline in the world. They are under investigation for it across Europe.

Subsidised by tax payers. Just like the bankers, farmers and every other industry you can think of. It’s the impoverishment of the masses to to protect the elite and wealthy few, and it’s not just an Irish issue.
I suppose this means more increases in the likes of web check in and baggage and card fees .

Brilliant start to the week , another reason for the drop could be they have been paying for bigger maintenance checks that until more recent times they just sold the plane before these checks .

Ryan air take it or leave it, no one forces anyone to chose (untill he buys Aer Lingus prehapes) The key point here is fuel prices have gone up, and are only going in one direction. Drive, Fly, or go by sea we are being ripped off by “high Fuel ” prices.

What is interesting here is the amount of RuinAir supporters it is quite clear these people have little or no standards , and the point that we would be over charged if they were not around is non sense , here is what we call an Irish company which operates an anti Irish recruitment system , (2) bullies its staff into submission from its managements scare tactics (3) try’s to bully airports into Ruinairs way of thinking which is our way or no way , (4) charging all their workforce for the privilege to work , and being subsidised left right and centre and that’s only to mention a few , but yes RuinAir supporters we would be lost without them

Ryanair got 305 million euro last year in subsidies from the airports.
This is not allowed under European law but they do things like charge the airport to advertise for an unspecified number of days on their website through a marketing company.

Deregulation brought about the low cost travel. Not Ryanair. Fact.

Tried to book flights on the ryanair website recently. If there was a law against misdirection and double dealing on a website MO’L would be on remand. Being sent to the hotel booking page with the flight booking page hidden from view, tick boxes hidden and not responding to first click. It’s like trying to buy a ticket from a dodgy fairground hustler. Pathetic – stress inducing and unnecessary. I’d gladly pay €10 – 20 more to avoid the hassle. They are likely to kill their own golden goose by squeezing it’s neck too hard – and soon. It’s getting to be a bit like the Governments that MOL complains about – arrogance in the knowledge that no-one else is likely to oust them in the near future. No I don’t work for Aerlingus. I’m a fan of how the internet has made a lot more things than flights accessible to all as well as cheaper and hate the way Ryanair abuse it at will with their childish website shenanagans.
Plenty of union fat cat Aer Lingus staff on here today.
