Because BA don’t compete with them in the same way that FR do so merging the companies shouldn’t take away customer choice and isn’t likely to drive up prices.

It’s called competition Jack, if Ryanair took over Aerlingus there would little or no competition in Dublin etc. A good example of this can be seen on routes out of Dublin where there is only one carrier operating, you will pay through the nose!

I know that a bit of research into why the Cork-Heathrow link may be dropped would be unheard of round these parts but here goes anyway.. The Aer Lingus Cork-Heathrow route in 2013 had a load factor of 80% based on four daily rotations on Airbus A320′s. This puts it ahead in terms of load factor than some of British Airways own regional UK-Heathrow routes such as Newcastle for example.

So clearly here we have a profitable service providing traffic to Europe’s largest hub airport. A hub by definition needs short haul feed to fill long haul routes. So maybe, just maybe ,there’s a viable market being served here and hypothetically if anything were to happen to this, one of the other European hubs (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris etc) would gladly take the business. The only reason the Cork Heathrow route would be dropped would be as a part of some total shift in BA policy where it would be dropping parts of its UK feeder services. Considering these are needed to fill its long haul aircraft, this simply isn’t going to happen

I hope your right Bob. Not just Heathrow though. It’s also 18 other destinations. Aer lingus is the biggest carrier at the airport and if flights start dropping off and the airport sell out to Ryanair and they systematically push out all the other airlines then we will have a Shannon part 2

At the moment ( the winter season), Aer Lingus have only three jet aircraft based in Cork, one of these does the 4 daily Heathrow rotations, another does the Amsterdam and Paris routes (2x daily Amsterdam + 1x daily Paris) and the other does the sun destinations (Spain).

So that’s seven daily flights all going to the primary hub airports of Europe. These frequencies have not been touched in years so clearly there’s a healthy demand being catered for here. BA won’t be touching that source of long haul feed, if they do there are plenty alternatives

Thats because in 1992, the EU deregulated air travel within Europe with the very intention of injecting more competition into the market. I cannot believe people would be happier to see Ryanair take over Aer Lingus than IAG. Ryanair, as great as they are and all actively treat competition with contempt and will introduce and dump services at a whim to get rid of competition.Just look at Wizz Airs routes to Cork or the former Aer Arann Cork-Dublin route for example. They made very little secret of their plans for the Heathrow slots, something that are basically the main component of the opposition to this proposed IAG take over

IAG don’t need to take the EI slots, they have enough of their own and can codeshare with EI on DUB-LHR to then redeploy their own DUB-LHR slots.

Its 2015, LHR slots are not as essential as before. We can still get to London via STN,LCY and LGW.

Ireland’s and EU Competition Authorities would never allow Ryanair acquire Aer Lingus outright…monopoly just not a runner for obvious market reasons.

IAG, as one of the world’s largest airline Groups, is probably the ideal long-term owner for AL, and best for Ireland’s long term economic interests.

Economies of scale should be significant: Buying power in IAG leading to better deals with Airbus and Boeing on future fleet replacements; keener fuel prices; better access to cheaper long-term funding; efficient internal pension funds management, IT management services etc.

All of the above should result in competitive air fares for the punter in the proposed expanded IAG.

So, it looks as if all are locked and loaded for a deal.

In my view, all sellers should hold out for a better deal. Ryanair shareholders for example can’t be happy with latest offer, which hardly recovers its original investment. MOL is awfully quite on the matter. He probably knows full well offer will be rejected in the Dail forcing Willie to cough up some more on future offer.

Staff have one last chance to get black hole in AL Pension Fund plugged, and
Government hold the necessary bargaining chips to help them achieve this.

You can expect even more flights to the US from Dublin if EI is assumed into IAG, or rather, into the Joint Business Agreement across the transatlantic. With Heathrow full, BA could even start (or have EI operate) new services to new, unserved locations in North America with Aer Lingus, BA, Iberia, and even Finnair feeding connecting passengers through Dublin.

Rebranding of large utilities so the can be sold easier to global English speaking economic speculators. Rebranding of large utilities so they can be sold easier to global English speaking economic speculators. I am expecting to wake up to coillte with the new name “Forestry Ireland” before the government retry to flog it. Asset stripping is never good for any business and is generally worse for a state.

Dubai on the other hand are in a middle of nowhere and lods of Airlines that link Europe to Asia/east Africa/Australia will stop there to refuel and help their passengers to link to other destination. I imagine that AIG – if successful – will radically restructure the company which will probably have the effect of boosting revenue and increasing share value? I don’t think my mother would be too happy about benefiting financially from the dispossession of former colleagues (as I imagine any future restructuring would entail job losses and worsening conditions for remaining staff).

As long as the identity, branding and slots are protected, accepting the offer from IAG would now be the best thing to do. At least Aer Lingus has several things in common with IAG: it is a western European company (it is not a primarily Asian or Middle Eastern company like Etihad or Ermirates). It is also a parent company that seems to specialise in running flag-carrying airlines, such as Iberia (Spain) and British Airways.

Airlines are a capital intensive business. A good airline needs the capital to renew and upgrade their fleet every few years, IAG will provide this. The IAG connection will also open up a new world of travelling possibilities for Irish consumers through Dublin, and could make Dublin one of the great hub airports of the world. The IAG deal would be a big boon for Dublin Airport itself, especially considering the fact that the great facility that is Terminal 2 remains greatly underutilised and hasn’t come close to fulfilling its potential thanks to the limited nature of Aer Lingus’ current operations.

If IAG merges with Aer Lingus, it is possible that Irish consumers could get flights from Terminal Two direct to the Far-East and to new cities in North and South America. Even in terms of short-haul flights, Aer Lingus being an IAG airline could open up new cities in England and Europe for Irish consumers and businesspeople to fly to directly.

The worst reason in the world for the Govt to dither over selling its minority stake would be to appease the trade unions. The unions would like to maintain Aer Lingus as their little fiefdom, at the expense of the airline spreading its wings and fulfilling its potential as part of a larger entity. If the union barons are the only reason why the Govt is dithering, then the debate over its sale should be over.

Price is still too low but the best option for keeping a “national” carrier, IAG need Aerlingus to fill the BA & Iberia long haul. One world means you can use your miles on almond their carriers (I collect BA but fly everyone else as their cheaper and service is better) the fat will be trimmed and Aerlingus will survive … Again
Dub route is already code share with BA & BMI so they won’t mess with pricing too much as Ryanair will be waiting like vultures in the wings.

It’s funny how protective we are about our door to London given we’re about to celebrate the 100 years since our last effort to close it!

The government are sitting on it, they will wait until there is yet another scandal to distract from the sale then sign it off the night before a holiday….. its the only way to do buisness !!!!. The A.L staff will probably get most of that 330 million back when their pension goes belly up in a few years.

What percentage of the sale will go to the Troika? 50%? and then what is left? Sell your soul for a bag of coal and you don’t even have a fire!!! That should send the shivers up Labour backsides as Europe’s best boys order them to comply for a pittance…toothless weasels stuffed into a pair of Fine Gael jockies and not a bulge in sight.

What if they decide to wind up Aerlingus that means only choice Ryanair and Ireland will become isolated as Ryanair doesn’t fly to the USA. Prices will rocket.

There is a clear correlation between the bluster of labour tds rallying against a sale and the government approving it….take it that aer lingus is gone now they have started to blow hot air. Brendan Ryan uses this trick all the time but do not expect him to stand by his bluster when the party line is called.

I guess most Irish people wish Guinness was still an Irish company! Economy is doing well, tourism is up and they want to sell a national asset – then what’s left ? Hotels and properties are gone.. What is Irish – the assets that nobody wants .. The crap Ireland will have to keep. Don’t sell !!!
