Gardaí launch investigation after man and woman attacked by group in south Dublin estate

The man was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of his non-serious injuries.

GARDAÍ HAVE LAUNCHED an investigation after a man and woman were attacked by a group of youths on St Patrick’s night at Marlfield Lawns in Tallaght, south Dublin.

A man, in his 30s, and a woman, in her late teens, were injured during the assault involving a group of “unidentified individuals”, gardaí said.

The man was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of his non-serious injuries.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.

Marlfield Lawns and its surrounding areas have been dealing with several incidences of anti-social behaviour, which local councillors say have increased during the pandemic.

“Maybe it’s the boredom of the lockdown, but there was anti-social behaviour here before. To combat it we need more gardaí on the streets. That’s the biggest thing,” local Sinn Féin Councillor Dermot Richardson said.

“But it’s an issue around the country, it’s not just in Tallaght,” he added.

Richardson said a number of his constituents have been in touch about anti-social incidents in their areas recently, with teenagers the cause of most complaints.

“I think there is an onus on parents to know where their children are at night time… but ultimately we need more garda patrols on the street and more resources in the area.”

Fine Gael Councillor Baby Pereppadan says he has written to the Minister for Justice seeking a second garda station for the Tallaght area.

An issue that is due to be raised at Monday’s Area Committee by Fianna Fáil Councillor Charlie O’Connor is the concern of the community in Kingswood over the continued practice of servicing the area from garda stations in Clondalkin and Tallaght.

O’Connor is asking that the Chief Executive write to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to raise the communities concerns and to ask “if this is a good use of garda resources”.

In response to a parliamentary question on the issue last October, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she was informed by gardaí that there are regular patrols in both areas by uniform and plain-clothes personnel, including the community policing and garda mountain bike units, district detective unit and drug unit personnel, which are supplemented by the burglary response units and roads policing units.

“I am assured that local garda management closely monitor the aforementioned patrols and other operational strategies in place, in conjunction with crime trends and policing needs of the communities in these areas to ensure optimum use of garda resources and that current structures in place meet the requirements needed to deliver an effective and efficient policing service to the residents concerned. The situation is kept under constant review.”

“I understand that a collaborative policing plan is in the process of being implemented by Local Garda Management responsible for both the Tallaght and Clondalkin areas,” said McEntee.

It’s not boredom and it’s not pandemic related. It’s scrotisim. Plane and simple they’re scrotes and it’s most likely inherited from their parents.

@Seymour business: the same excuse is always rolled out. “There aren’t enough activities for the kids so they wreck the place”.
There’s just no deterrent for the kids anymore. The courts don’t care even if the kids are caught and the parents seem to care even less

@Seymour business: too true but when the legal system does nothing except grease the wheels of their fellow solicitors, barrister’s etc. Just a couple of weeks ago the book of quantum for personal injuries was updated and the judges took a vote to accept it. I suppose their friends were going to be down money

@Seymour business: There you go then. Close the comments section, Professor Seymour Business(if you inherited your sense of humour from your parents they must have been the life and sould of the party) has cracked it. This behaviour is hereditary so what we need to do is t 15years old, imprison the children of every adult with a criminal record, forever. Won’t be long before crime is eradicated completely. I take my hat off to you Seymour.

@James Lyons: Granted there was a couple of typos in my post James(fat thumbs), but I still fail to see how you read what I said and came to the conclusion you did. I was mocking the theory that this type of behaviour is hereditary, not absolving the perpetrators of responsibility. I know it’s not fashionable, but its not contradictory to want harsher consequences for these kinds of crimes, while also acknowledging that the causes of anti social behaviour are nuanced and many. Anybody who doesn’t want the actual causes addressed, doesn’t want the problem addressed, they just want to make themselves feel better.

Even if they knew who they were there are no consequences for either the kids or their parents so they dont give s–t. Until there is proper enforceable ‘punishment’then it will just continue. Most of these families are on social welfare so hit them in the pocket where it hurts by paying compo to those they rob/steal and hurt from their dole money/wages. They wouldn’t be long taking notice of what the kids were up to then. As for the kids make them clean public toilets /drains etc.

It’s all too frequent up here(Marfield),and surrounding areas.
People being attacked just going to the local shops, and I’m sure it’s not just Tallaght(not that that justifies it.
To give an indication of how bad it is,I was going around to a friend’s house on Tuesday and a group of about twenty kids aged between 5/6/7 with bars, sticks, and rocks squaring up to each other.
Great to see what the future holds for them…..

Respect for ones self and others certainly begins at home, but seems to be lost on these individuals.
They have little interest or no respect for an amenities in these and surrounding areas.
What’s even worse is that X amount of money is being pumped into the redeployment of a local park, and I just see it as a magnet for these feral kids.
Shame really, because the plans put forward seem to be great for the area as a whole, but a small few will ruin it for many.

Gangs are out of control in this city along with anti social behaviour.
We need new laws with strong punishment as a deterrent for breaking them. We need a need a new heavily armed police department that works with the army to deal with this scim…. we also need them to be locked up. Let darwinism take its course on then.
Very very importantly. Go after the parents of under 18s. Name and shame both offender and parents

They don’t care because their parents don’t care. There is no incentive to improve their lives. Ireland is a welfare state, no need to work if you don’t want to, don’t worry you will get a house and free health care, clothes on your back and food in your belly. If their parents stopped getting welfare and had to get off their asses and work to support their families then maybe the kids would have more respect, different set of moral and aspirations to make their lives better.

Sterilise the parents and exterminate the kids, problem solved overnight. Think of the savings in social welfare, prison costs, Garda and security staff costs, insurance costs due to resultant in fraudulent claims etc. And the areas would be so much nicer without them. A simple solution, can’t think why it hasn’t been implement already :)

As JF Kennedy once said “Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see”, do not blame children for the bad decisions made by adults, imagine if your own parents had felt the way you do, your anger is misdirected .
