'Complex' rescue of stricken trawler off Cork underway as Irish Navy tows it to safety

Last night’s rescue operation was hampered by gale-force winds and heavy seas.

LAST UPDATE | 27 Mar 2021

A FISHING VESSEL that suffered a loss of power is being towed towards Bantry by the Naval ship LE George Bernard Shaw.

The Irish-registered Ellie Adhamh was drifting approximately 70 miles West of Bantry Bay without power since yesterday.

Last night’s rescue operation was hampered by gale-force winds and heavy seas.

A tug attempted to reach the vessel but was escorted back to shore by the RNLI due to rough seas. Several windows on the Ellie Adham have been smashed by high waves.

The operation is now focused on the LÉ George Bernard Shaw towing the ship ashore.

The response is being coordinated by the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination centre at Valentia who initially tasked a Coast Guard Helicopter to the scene.

The crew declined an offer to have some of the crew evacuated from the vessel.

The situation was monitored overnight by Valentia with the LE George Bernard Shaw on scene from 9pm last night.

The crew are today reported to be in good spirits.

The Castletownbere RNLI Lifeboat was also alerted and is monitoring the tow.

The tow is proceeding satisfactorily and is expected to reach Bantry Bay later this evening where arrangements will be made to have the vessel taken into port.

The Rescue 115 Coast Guard helicopter and RNLI lifeboat were also tasked in the rescue.

An initial attempt by the LÉ George Bernard Shaw to tow the vessel failed due to poor weather. Rescue 115 then dropped pumping equipment to the trawler as it was taking on water.

A second attempt to tow the vessel was successful and is currently underway.

“This is a multi-agency operation currently underway in a complex and challenging environment,” a statement from the Defence Forces.

“Irish Coast Guard Helo remains on standby should the situation deteriorate with the LÉ George Bernard Shaw remaining as [on-scene coordinator].”

Most watched show on television because there was absolutely nothing else worthwhile on. It’s time RTE stopped blowing all of the licence fee money on the disgraceful salaries of it’s “stars” (half a million a year for Ray D’Arcy) and actually started putting some money into content.

I kind of don’t mind the TV show. It has a couple of laughs in it. Saw the live show too and it wasn’t too bad. But the movie is absolutely appalling. One of the worst I’ve ever seen. It should be buried somewhere where it will never be found again.

I tuned out after 20 minutes. The wife turned in over after another 5 minutes. Looked at a few reviews and got 2 out if 5. It was truly awful muck. RTE showing it 3 times over holidays. You’d think they could find something better. It was a pure money making exercise Brendan even admitted that himself. It just didn’t work.

The movie had one irredeemable defect: it was not funny. My wife loves Mrs Brown and I can hear her laughing like a drain every time it’s on (I cannot abide the show) but the movie raised not even a titter in her. She switched it off half way through – like countless other fans, I suspect.

Watched the movie the other night. It was awful. All the family around cringing at how poor it was all slapped together. Agree too with the swearing. Totally unnecessary. A few fecks here and there hurts no one, but every second word is either a curse or an unfunny overused innuendo. I really enjoy most comedy. Didn’t laugh once during this though!

Brendan O’Carroll is the worst example of comedy. His movie was a disgrace, every second word an f or a b. Shame on RTE to think it was suitable viewing on Christmas night. horrendous stuff. We were spoiled for comedy as kids, Porridge, Fools and Horses, Young Ones, Two Ronnies. O’Carroll should be strung up for crimes against comedy. The idea that out takes make up the gags in the show is cringe worthy and people fall for this. Sad excuse for a comedian, comedy bully more like!
