Five arrests made over shooting of teenager in Dublin 8 last month

A 17-year-old was shot a number of times in the incident on Eugene Street in February.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED four men in their 20s and a juvenile male in connection with a shooting in Dublin 8 last month.

On 24 February, a 17-year-old was shot at least three times during the incident which occurred on Eugene Street in Dublin 8 shortly before 11pm.

It’s understood gardaí believed the shooting was linked to a local drugs feud.

Gardaí made the five arrests this morning following a number of searches in Dublin.

All five are currently detained under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 at garda stations in Dublin.

They can be held for up to seven days.

Investigations remain ongoing at this time, gardaí added.

Crazy to think a 17 year olds are shooting each other now over drug debts or territory. Has to be a proper debate about the legalisation of all drugs in Ireland. There has to be a way of taking the money away from the drug gangs and stop the using and manipulating young and vulnerable teens. It’s a very difficult issue to resolve but I think we need to start looking at ways of dealing with this madness

@john s: Yeah I hear you but I don’t think it’s a long term solution to a bigger problem. This needs to be tackled at source in my humble opinion

@john s: “jail instead of suspended sentences.”

Doesn’t stop the trade. If they’re willing to risk their lives then jail won’t deter them, not with the amount of money involved.

@Will: we won’t know until we try, criminals do not get punished in Ireland so until you start to go to jail for your crimes. Later today as usual you will hear of someone being found guilty of a crime who has multiple convictions yet will get a suspended sentence. The legal gravy train needs to stop. So I believe we should try jail first

@john malonoy: correct mate. Father and mother will say My son is an angel he wouldn’t do anything illegal. And even the Gardai have proof of their child wrongdoing the parents instead of teaching their child manners , behaviour etiquettes they will say no my son is still and angel. They don’t want to study bcaz they parents don’t train them. This will go for generations until the government roots them out of then council houses and distribute them in the rest of the country and force them to go to school.

@WiseUp: Legalising cannabis would be a great place to start. The current policy of prohibition ensures that youths have easy access to cannabis which they can then both consume and turn a profit from.

@WiseUp: there is an answer. Its the legalisation of most drug’s except for heroin. It will give the government more money and most importantly it will take money from these drug gangs. Its as simple as that.

@Niall: really so there are no drug gangs in the countries that have legalised it. Cigarettes are legal yet criminals still are involved. How about we enforce the law instead of the revolving door of the courts

@john s: If you read up on drug related crime in countries and American states that have legalised and regulated the sale and distribution you’ll see it absolutely works.
It’s not an easy thing to do and goes against lots of people instincts but I think it’s a necessary step at this stage.

@WiseUp: not disagreeing with you regarding legalisation, but drugs are the means to make money without having to contribute to society like the rest of us. Something else will take its place. Legalisation on its own won’t solve the crime problem.

@Pablo: I know what you’re saying but removing the revenue and distribution of the drugs and stopping the manipulation of people by these drugs gangs is what’s required. People will always look to make a quick buck and there will always be illegal activities but that doesn’t mean we just don’t bother trying to find a solution to the problems.

Legalising drugs is probably the only realistic answer to this but it’s probably not all that realistic when weed is still illegal in this country. Not a smoker myself but what’s the justification of keeping this as a banned substance.

Eugene Street was a scary place after dark around ten years ago. Would have assumed it was calming down due to the ongoing redevelopment next door and the presence of construction crews etc making it less isolated, but apparently not. Always really felt for the decent people living there – some of my friends lived around the area and the number of break-ins and acts of vandalism was incredible.
