Eight arrests over planned protest in Dublin city centre

Seven men and one woman were arrested.

EIGHT PEOPLE WERE arrested as part of a garda operation aimed at policing planned protests in Dublin city this afternoon.

Six of the arrests, five men and one woman, were in relation to alleged breaches of Covid-19 regulations while two, both male, were related to public order incidents.

Gardai said this afternoon that, under Covid-19 regulations, there are restrictions on people organising events outdoors and there also restrictions on travelling outside the home without a reasonable excuse.

A Facebook group called The Irish Inquiry, which has shared posts arguing for an end to Covid-19 restrictions, has shared footage of the scene on O’Connell Street where the arrests took place.

The person recording the live stream is seen speaking to a number of gardaí and saying that gardaí intervened when a number of people gathered together.

Earlier today, the area around the GPO was closed off to the public as part of Easter Rising commemorations involving Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Defence Minister Simon Coveney and Dublin Lord Mayor Hazel Chu.

An outright war of export restrictions is probably going to be bad for everyone, as opposed to the current war of words.

But after the internal market bill, and the unilateral extensions of grace periods in NI, it’s absolutely farcical for Westminster to be appealing to the EU’s sense of international reputation.

Westminster certainly doesn’t worry much about theirs.

    @Paul Furey: There
Could be some simple maths that get applied to redirect some volume from orders into EU supplies to level the playing field. Either that or EU countries with AZ production facilities could nationalise them temporarily, like Ireland did with hospitals.

@Gerard: the UK demanding that a healthy 35 year old should get a jab ahead of a 75 year old Italian because they have a contract is not a good look, neither is the EU starving them of scheduled second doses. The obvious compromise for the next 3 months is that the UK keep their own AZ while AZ try and make up EU shortfalls using EU factories. The EU licence Pfizer to ship enough vaccines to the UK to meet it’s second dose commitments.
It would also help if EU countries push out Pfizer second jab as all current reviews show no ill effects and a possible increase in efficacy.

I’m sure the UK’s multiple breaches of international law, unilateral actions, relentless taunting by his own Gov Ministers towards the EU, gloating about our vaccine delays and fuelling their media with an anti EU obsession has had no effect on good will whatsoever, . The UK has received 10 million doses from the EU while exporting ZERO themselves because they have a de facto export ban. 1 in 3 of all doses administered in the UK came from the EU.

Britain might win the vaccine race and fully reopen. But, in time Europe will finish the race also. And Europe will remember what the UK did to them in a time of crisis.

@John McG: The problem with the EU contract is they didn’t use UK contract law. There is a reason so much contract law is conducted in the UK because there’s no ambiguity, if it’s in the contract it is a part of the contract. UK built factories from the ground up in the expectation of what was coming down the line, the EU didn’t & now it’s whinging. There is only one winner in a vaccine war & thats the one that holds all the cards or ingredients needed to manufacture it & as one of the main ingredients comes from either Canada or the UK that winner won’t be the EU. The Soviet Union collapsed because it wanted to centralise everything the EU should check the history books it wont have to go back too far!

At this stage, they have vaccinated almost everyone who was vulnerable to this disease. Any yet they are still locked down and the constant scaremongering by their government and media remains unabated. Lunacy.

@D. Memery: sure – see link below. I think you are referring to ‘case fatality rate ‘ (deaths as % of confirmed cases). The number of actual cases is far higher (as many as 10x). The actual infection to death rate is referred to as ‘infection fatality rate’, or IFR. The below article refers to the most recent study by the WHO (it also contains a link to the actual study), which found and IFR of between 0.5% and 1%. Even if it is higher (let’s say 1.5%) the UK vaccination program will have ready reduced the IFR to below 0.1%, which is the flu IFR:

Maybe the EU should put out a statement saying it will ban only the export of AZ vaccine excatly equal to the amount not delivered in the agreed contract.

Although that may mean all of the plants output.

But a statement such as this will highlight to the world that there has been a very serious breech of contract and it is only fair and right that they take these steps to correct it and protect its citizenship.

My own great Uncle a fine man from Roscommon was fighting with the “Desert Rats” 2 years before the o i l y Dev’ opened a book of condolence for the Fuherer. Many Brits and fine Irish plus Commonwealth citizens lost their lives fighting for freedom in Europe. If the RAF had not won the B of Britain there is no way the US could have used our islands as a launch pad for the allied invasion of Europe. And Churchill a man of many faults but it was HE who persuaded FDR to step in and abandon their years of isolationism. Your hatred , contempt and sheer i g n orance in that statement belittled the efforts of many heroic Irish men who served in WW2

How truly ungrateful we are. To suggest the Irish are ungrateful to the British only highlights your ignorance to be honest. You talk about a group of people that the vast majority of them were peasant and had nothing to do with what happened to people in Ireland, what to people in Ireland actually happened to them as well because they were persecuted for being Catholics, they were murdered by the same tyrants, they never had no choice about happened because like the Irish they were not allowed a vote, it was 1918 when all men over 21 and women over 30 were allowed to vote then 1928 when all women over 21 were allowed it was not until 1969 when everyone over 18 was allowed to vote. It was the late 1200s when the first workhouse opened and 1948 when the last 1 closed for hundreds of years 6 to 12% of the population lived in them, do you honesty blame these people for what happened in Ireland?

It was the nobility, the elites and even the clergy in every European country that persecuted people but not the vast majority of people who were peasants who never persecuted anyone.

Did you ever wonder why the irish had to travel to Britain for work and to prospect of feeding their families?! It was due to the absolute state the British let this country in. Also funny you should bring up the irish in the UK. It was not that long ago there would be a regular sign hanging outside nearly ever hospitality building in england, it read “No blacks, No irish”. Yeah we were teated wonderfully by the British. Skipped over the famine part too i see. No comment on that. You sure you don’t want to talk about the forced export of the remaining food in the country and the enforced slave labour of the Irish people on the famine roads? Or who would you like to abdicate that responsibility too?

All the Brit bashing on this section about the vaccine . The Brits are Northen Irish . Scotland wales and England . The EU have been Shambolic since the start of the Pandemic . Many countries up to last week stopped the AZ vaccine with Macron and Merkle at the front . Now they want it even though all along the EMA said it was good . They did a survey at the weekend on the vaccine uptake and 66% and 55% of French and Germans don’t think the AZ vaccine is safe . So Macron and Merkle have a lot to answer for . Google it the reason why the UK secured more of the vaccines is because they had better Lawyers and knew what they were doing The EU on the other hand had did not . I am getting my jab tomorrow .

    EU export ban now.
We need those Jabs and UK isn’t exporting any to us so why should we export to them? The British media are revelling in the fact that their vaccine rollout has inoculated over 50% of their population with a first dose while EU has barely got off the ground since December.
However the UK press has failed to mention that they don’t have enough to give people their second jab because that doesn’t suit the narrative of a “successful Brexit”.
This is what happens when you gloat and gush at other peoples failures. The UK vaccine rollout isn’t as straight forward or “steamed ahead” as is made out to be.

Of course the Farage’s and other fake news peddling YouTuber’s will make out the EU is the big nasty in all of this.
