Health products regulator reports 'small number' of clotting events linked to AstraZeneca vaccine

The number of people affected is reported to be below five.

IRELAND’S HEALTH PRODUCTS regulator has reported some blood clotting events associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine in patients who received the Covid-19 jab here.

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) says “a very small number” of reports about blood clotting-type events combined with low platelets have been reported in people who have been given the vaccine.

The regulator did not specify the number of patients affected, but indicated that it is below five.

“In these cases, the individuals concerned sought medical attention, received specialist medical care and are reported to be responding well to treatment,” the HPRA said.

The HPRA reported 29 total cases of blood clotting-type events, the majority of which were not in combination with low platelet counts.

It said that the vast majority of these related to clots typically seen in the general population, such as those that occur in the legs (such as  deep vein thrombosis) and lung (such as pulmonary embolism).

“In many, the individuals concerned had risk factors for clotting,” the HPRA added.

In total, 6,616 reports of suspected side-effects as a result of vaccines were notified to the HPRA up to 15 April.

The authority said that the vast majority of these cases were “mild to moderate” in nature, and that the benefits of vaccines continue to outweigh the risk of serious side-effects.

It affects a very small amount of people, fair enough… However, what if you’re that person that it affects? Or it’s your parent, sibling, etc. It’s fine until it’s your family, like everything else in this country. I’d rather not take that Astrazeneca or J&J, and wait for Pfizer or Moderna. But they’re not giving people a choice, because they’re not available right now. Why rush this and why not just wait another few months? I feel for those in the 60-69 age group like my parents, who have no decent option – take it or go to the back of the queue if you don’t…

@Stop the Lights: no need the feel sorry for me, any rational person should be happy to get it. As someone in their 60s I feel sorry for everyone else because they’ve no idea when or what they are getting.
Our great public servants have decided it’s only safe if you’re born between 1952 and 1961. Meanwhile UK over 30s, France over 55s, Australia over 50s, Spain initially under 55s, then 60 to 69, now over 60s.

A somewhat scaremongering article. Absoulety report on this but it could be made clearer that clotting event =/= clot. I say this because some people will read the headline and jump to conclusions (as well as the comments section)

Every medication / vaccine on the planet carries risk. Even one in a million has to appear on a label or patient information sheet. Mass hysteria about the AZ vaccine. If my choice, will absolutely take it. 1/1000 chance of death from Covid. 1/1000,000 chance of clot from AZ vaccine.

@Gerard: Having a penicillin allergy is not a contraindication for AstraZeneca. Being allergic to one drug may indicate that you could suffer an allergic reaction to others but that is why there is monitoring in place in general. I will be taking it no problem and I am allergic to Penicillin. If I did, on a very off chance, have an allergic reaction then I would be surrounded by medical professionals. Risk of clots etc for this is less than many other everyday medicines. I’m not going to forsake antibiotics because I am allergic to one class, and I have been on alternative antibiotics that include side effects like ‘spontaneous tendon rupture’ and still took them and am alive because of them. That is the risk with medicine, in some cases it can cause harm but the overall good is the point behind them.

The Astra is banned in the US and Denmark but our government will pump it into to the 60-69 years olds. And purposely keep it within the age group in case it’s faults are true. Then only a few hundred thousand will be effected.

Should not be difficult/expensive for the State to indemnify/compensate those unfortunates but sure we can maybe have a look back in 30 years and issue an unreserved apology.
