Abandoned upturned boat found on Lough Derg

A rescue team is searching the area for any survivors.

A SEARCH IS continuing on Lough Derg in Tipperary after an upturned speedboat was discovered on the water

Colin Knight of Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat noted the upturned boat on Youghal Bay, close to Garrykennedy in Co Tipperary yesterday evening and the RNLI came alongside the speedboat at 9.50pm. They found that the boat had suffered extensive damage to the outdrive and propellers which they said was the kind of damage that occurs when the boat is actually sailing.

No-one was spotted near the boat and so a search of the area was launched with Killaloe Coast Guard joining the effort and the Irish Coast Guard’s search and rescue helicopter being called in to help.

Despite an extensive search of both the water and a volunteer and lifeboat crew search of the shoreline, no-one was found.

The lifeboat returned to base at 1am and the search began again at 5.30am today.

The article is confusing and inaccurate as it refers to a cruiser and a speedboat. It was one or the other I presume?

Sorry to say but I am equally confused! Is this the same incident or a separate one?

Is there a second boat in trouble or is this still the speed boat story? A cruiser is mentioned but a speed boat also?

Two separate incidents, same lifeboat station. Most recent report..
Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat is currently on a Shout, launched to assist 4 people whose cruiser was grounded and who abandoned their vessel to a small tender.

On Friday evening August 3 at 17.25hrs, Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was requested to launch to assist four persons who abandoned their vessel to a small tender, after their cruiser grounded in Carrigahorig Bay, near Terrylass at the northern end of Lough Derg.
The lifeboat with Helm Gerry O’Neill, Ger Egan and Ben Ronayne on board, were already afloat assisting with the ongoing search in Garrykennedy. The lifeboat made way immediately to assist. It is reported that all four persons are safe and well. The rescue is ongoing.
It has been a busy 24hrs for the volunteer crew of Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat.

And the incident from last night which relates to the speedboat, the search is still ongoing and update.
Reported at 1712 this evening as..
At 05.30hrs, August 3 Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat with, Helm Eleanor Hooker, Deirdre O’Brian and Owen Cavanagh on board, launched to resume the search for persons thought to be missing on Lough Derg. There were joined by the Killaloe Coast Guard Water Unit and Land Rescue and later by the Irish Coast Guard Search and Rescue unit based at Shannon. Members of the fishing community are also helping with the search. The Garda Dive team and the Killaloe Dive team are currently on scene. The search is ongoing. Changeover crew Helm Gerry O’ Neill, Ger Egan and Ben Ronayne have just been requested to go to the assistance of persons in difficuly on the lake.
    First report from last night..
Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat was launched to a vessel, sighted by RNLI Lifeboat helm Colin Knight whilst afloat, upturned in Youghal Bay, close to Garrykennedy.

On Thursday evening August 2 at 21.19hrs, Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was launched to investigate a vessel upturned in Youghal Bay, close to Garrykennedy. At 21.34hrs, the lifeboat launched with Helm Peter Clarke, Colin Knight and David Moore on board. Winds were southwesterly, Force 2, and visibility was good, but failing quickly with nightfall.

At 21.50 the lifeboat was alongside the upturned vessel, a 20ft speedboat. It was reported to have extensive damage to the outdrive and propellers, consistent with damage whilst underway. The lifeboat began a search of the area. Meanwhile the Killaloe Coast Guard unit launched from their base and the Irish Coast Guard Search and Rescue Helicopter took off from their base at Shannon to assist in the search.

Lifeboat crew, committee members and volunteers set off in teams to search the shoreline. There were no reports of anyone overdue, and attempts are ongoing to discover who might own the boat.

An extensive search of the water and shoreline didn’t reveal anything. The speedboat was taken to Garrykennedy and is being investigated by Garda specialists.

The search was called off and all teams returned to their bases. A search will begin once again at daybreak, 05.30hrs, August 3.

The Lifeboat returned to station and was ready for service again 01.00hrs.

Thanks Dave for the update. If reading this right it seems there are two separate incidents , one appears to have ended with all found safe, the other still ongoing. Thoughts with the families of those not yet found.
