Gardaí urging people to contact them if they believe their data was shared online in HSE hack

Gardaí have said they are not certain on the reports that data from the HSE hack is circulating online.

GARDAÍ HAVE URGED people who think they may have been impacted by the recent cyber attack on the HSE to contact their local Garda station.

It comes as the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB) is continuing to investigate the ransomware attack on the HSE last Friday.

The HSE last night secured a High Court injunction that would make it a criminal offence for anyone to disclose, trade or use the information. A decryption key was also provided to the HSE to help unlock the agency’s IT system.

Gardaí have said that it is not yet certain whether the reports about peoples personal records and data being circulated online are genuine yet.

However, they have said that it is probable and a feature of these kinds of attacks.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said earlier today that some patient data from the HSE had leaked online on the “dark net”.

“On the face of it, as has been reported, data from the HSE does appear to have been displayed on the dark net. The details of that are not something that would be confirmed because it’s an ongoing Garda investigation,” said Donnelly, speaking to Newstalk Breakfast.

Speaking to reporters this evening, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that it was always a possibility that data could be dumped online since the attack took place last week, but that the High Court injunction will make it more difficult for those looking to access the data.

“With the High Court injunction the HSE secured is a very powerful and strong one which makes it a criminal act to reveal any data that has been illegally obtained or stolen from the HSE system,” said Martin.

The Taoiseach also thanked social media companies who have cooperated with the State for promising to take down any of the information if it is dumped online by the attackers.

The Gardaí are also assuring those who have concerns about their data being breached, that their cases will be handled by specialist investigators and done in a sensitive manner.

Currently, advice from Gardaí remains that if you are contacted by anyone stating to have your personal information or are looking for your bank details, you should not engage.

@Paul Scully: If they start getting dodgy phone calls / email quoting personal details about them etc. : That’s one way they’ll know -> *their* <- data is likely on the dark web.
They could also start learning about Tor and .onions ‘n’ stuff

@Paul Scully: The HSE will have an obligation to inform you if you’re data is released on the dark web. It will just take some time. Also websites like https://haveibeenpwned.com/ will also let you know. I don’t think the injunction will stop sites like this from doing what they do.

@Honeybee: The dark web is not a “Weird Site” it is simply webpages that are not accessible via standard web browsers… But in keeping with the original story its virtually impossible or any joe soap to find out let alone tell the Guardai, as lets be honest what are they going to do, sweet f***k all…

What legal comeback do you have with the HSE for allowing your data to be stolen? They must be liable for this.

@Jim Buckley Barrett: typical compo culture.

From what we know so far, there’s a good chance nearly everyone was affected. You know who foots the State’s bills? The taxpayer.

@Gerard: accountability is not the same as ‘compo’. The reports coming out recently point to a dereliction of duty in terms of security and data management. If someone is badly affected by this in monetary terms then I hope the state recognises its own failures and has some kind of supports put in place.

Jim the HSE has been complying with their liabilities, inform the people and take actions to protect the data in their system.
Also they has made unlawful the disclosure of the date.
What does it mean? People have defamation law to protect themselves, any person who disclose anything about you. You sue them for defamation, they must to provide evidence of their statement which it can’t be done because of being unlawful evidence, you win, they lost, pay the legals fees and face State Prosecution.

    Simple

The HSE needs to instruct to free legal aid to take all these defamation cases as urgent matter and without even means test.
