Government trails 'positive announcement' as Cabinet sub-committee meets to decide on easing restrictions

Tomorrow’s announcement will focus on a timeline for the reopening of sectors such as aviation, tourism and hospitality.

LAST UPDATE | 27 May 2021

THE MEETING OF THE Cabinet sub-committee on Covid-19 is taking place this evening ahead of tomorrow’s announcement of a timeline for the easing of restrictions.

Cabinet will meet tomorrow to sign-off on a timeline for the reopening of sectors such as aviation, tourism and hospitality.

A sub-committee on economic matters met this afternoon but this evening’s Covid sub-committee meeting is likely to decide on the issues such as Ireland’s approach to summer international travel and live events.

The leaders of the three coalition parties are also expected to hold discussions.

An announcement on the government’s plans for pandemic welfare supports will not take place tomorrow and will be delivered next week.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar told party colleagues last night that the plans for financial supports will be discussed at Cabinet next Tuesday before an announcement is made.

Varadkar said there would be no dramatic changes, stating that payments will have to be phased out.

Speaking in Dáil today, Labour leader Alan Kelly called it tomorrow a “big announcement” while Varadkar described it as a “positive announcement”.

Varadkar referenced said the number of people in ICU is below 50 and that the number of cases was “stable at about 400 or 500 a day”. Health officials this evening confirmed a further 436 cases and reported that 41 people with Covid-19 were in ICU.

“We are ahead of ourselves in terms of where we thought we would be with hospitalisations and cases,” the Tánaiste said.

For that reason, we can look forward to a very positive announcement on Friday regarding the reopening of society and economy and the phased return to international travel, events and other matters.

Yesterday, Fáilte Ireland announced its guidelines for the first phase of a partial reopening of hospitality, with the plans drawing both support and criticism.

The guidelines were being prepared ahead of the return of outdoor dining and drinking in restaurants and pubs from 7 June.

There is no fixed date set for the wider return of indoor dining beyond hotels but it’s expected to be some time in July.

Plans for travel and tourism will centre on how and when Ireland plans to use the EU’s Green Cert system when it becomes operational by the end of June.

The system is being prepared to allow for tourism in the EU this summer and will create a digital health pass that displays a person’s vaccination status, results of Covid-19 tests or whether they have recovered from a coronavirus infection.

Different EU member states may sign up to different elements of the plan at different times, with suggestions that Ireland may opt to allow fully vaccinated people to travel.

In the Dáil this morning, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that half of Ireland’s adult population will have received at least one Covid-19 vaccination by the end of this week but he warned that it was “unclear” whether the target of vaccinating 80% of the population by the end of June would be met.

Donnelly told TDs there were “serious concerns” over the supply of the Janssen vaccine in the coming weeks.

“It looks like we’re going to get a significant under-delivery on Janssen and there are question marks as to what’s going to come in from AstraZeneca,” the Wicklow TD said.

You mean the big announcement that has been leaked and kite flying to death over the last week or so around the reopening of hospitality and aviation….let’s be clear, there won’t he any big fanfare cos with failte Ireland effectively doing a summer 2020 reboot around its guidelines, and the farcical nonsense in relation to live music in bars and restaurants, all this announcement will do is cause plenty to cancel the staycation in Ireland, and either go north or wait till the digital passport is in place and travel abroad. Nobody wants another summer spending money on a break away where we have more terms and conditions attached to it.

@Thomas O’ Donnell: you forgot the biggest card pulled from the rear end of most of the NPHET and government support base and that’s India, apparently Ireland is going to end up like India in the eyes of some, who don’t actually research the reasons why India ended up the way they did….

The Arts don’t even cop a mention in this article and the big positive announcement tomorrow?? The politicians are the first to take free tickets to gigs and happy to take the tourist taxes that the arts provides and blete about how proud they are of the Irish music when selling the country as a tourist destination. But give an actual clear, thought out, working road map for the Arts?! Apparently not. It’s not like the Arts community need anything positive to hang on to and that there is a light there for us too?! It’s an absolute disgrace.

Not a positive one for me or any of my fellow musicians. Watching friends in countries all over Europe getting back to live performance and once again being told to essentially eff off over here. I hope that this countries musicians, and those who are friends and family of musicians don’t forget what this government have done to us.

@Laura Walsh: Protected us from getting overrun by the virus is what they’ve done for us. Live music unfortunately is a particular problem. If there’s live music at a bar, say, people have to talk louder to be heard. There have been studies that have made it clear that an infected person will spread the virus further and to more people when talking loudly (incl singing). I wonder is it practical to have live music without amplification? Might be no pint.

@Thomas O’ Donnell: why is it banned in beer gardens? Why are test events in UK showing there’s as much risk going to live events as shopping? Why were higher risk work settings, such as meat plants, not put under more stringent rules? Why are televisions in pubs not banned? Why are speakers in pubs not banned? Why have other countries allowed musicians to return to work in a safe manner?

At what point, after mass vaccination, do we allow a sector of society return to work? This government has done nothing for me only destroyed my livelihood and my hopes for the future. If talking too loudly is considered such a massive danger then nothing should be open ffs.

@Laura Walsh: I think it is particularly cruel to be hiding behind ‘science’ and an abundance of caution preventing any live music and imposing 1130 closing – the lack of effort in understanding that other countries eased back live music – acoustic sessions in safe environments – anything would be better than this bs – and the nonsense that we are suppose to be thrilled we have an outdoor summer because of vaccines when we are doing exactly the same as last July without 9 euro burgers – nonsense

@Thomas O’ Donnell: the virus will probably never disappear, learn to live with it like we do the seasonal flu, do u require nphet here on a permanent basis, with your daily cases announcement in 2 years time?. Yes, hospital cases HAVE gone to near nothing, get your calculator out, 40 people out of 5 million in icu and only 100 in total in hospital, not sure what your definition of near nothing is but 0.002% is definitely my definition of near nothing, as for herd immunity give me a break with the covid language, move on and enjoy your life, I don’t want to be too harsh as I believe there is 100s of Irish people who have been permanently scarred by this covid year and can’t come out of it and let it go

Food for thought, purly speculation. With no deaths being reported for a while now. It being blamed on the hse hacking. If cases of positive tests can be released, why not the fatalities. Is it lockdown fatigue so we can relax the restrictions.

What really surprises me on here is that we surrendered our health and safety over to NPHET whether we realised it or not. Now people are shocked that NPHET do not want to give up that hold on us. So many vested interests, not affected financially by the lockdowns, are the ones mad to stretch it out as long as they can and like sheep we just follow.
All along, the answer was the vaccines. Vaccine is the way to return to normality. We have to back it. If you are vaccinated, you are protected and those that are not are no treat to you or you to them. End of. Stop buying this BS of “oh you can still get it and transmit it even if vaccinated”. Whether you are pro or anti vaccine, we have no choice but to trust it and get on with living. Otherwise what is the point of it?
