European flights refused permission to land in Russia as row over Belarusian journalist escalates

French and Austrian carriers were denied permission to land in Moscow after changing routes to avoid Belarusian airspace.

AIRLINES REVEALED RUSSIA has blocked some European flights avoiding Belarus airspace in a standoff over the arrest of a Belarusian journalist, as his parents pleaded today for international help to get him released.

The G7 global powers also demanded Minsk release Roman Protasevich and the EU’s foreign policy chief threatened hard-hitting economic sanctions.

Belarus’s strongman President Alexander Lukashenko sparked international outrage by dispatching a fighter jet Sunday to intercept a Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius carrying Roman Protasevich, 26, and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, 23.

A nervous-looking Protasevich was last seen in a video released by Belarusian authorities on Monday in which he was seen supposedly admitting to helping to organise mass unrest, a charge that could land him in jail for 15 years.

“I want you to relay our appeal everywhere, throughout the world, to government representatives, to EU countries, to EU leaders, to US leaders: I am appealing, I am begging, help me free my son,” his mother Natalia told journalists in Warsaw, visibly moved.

Roman’s father, Dmitry said his son was “a tough man” and “a hero”.

“Throughout his life he fought for the truth and passed it on to people, which is why Lukashenko committed this despicable act,” he said.

The family and their lawyer confirmed that they have not had any communication with their son since his arrest.

‘Immediate and unconditional release’

Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven wealthy nations today demanded the “immediate and unconditional release” of Protasevich, “as well as all other journalists and political prisoners held in Belarus”, in a joint statement published by the British government.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that proposals were “on the table” to target key sectors of the Belarusian economy.

Borrell mooted targeting the potash fertiliser sector or refusing gas being delivered to the bloc via Belarus over the “hijacking” of the plane by the regime.

He was echoed by German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass also raised the possibility of hitting key firms in the fertiliser sector and said the EU could curb the Belarusian government’s ability to issue bonds in Europe.

But he played down the likelihood of the bloc agreeing quickly to reject gas transiting through pipelines in Belarus, insisting it was “more of a medium and long-term issue”.

The bloc was also looking at “targeted sanctions” against the Belarusian authorities to add to the 88 regime figures and seven companies already on a blacklist over a brutal crackdown on the opposition after last year’s disputed presidential election.

At a briefing in Vilnius, where she fled to after last year’s election, exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya today called for an “economic boycott of the regime”.

Christophe Deloire, the head of media rights watchdog Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) was also in Lithuania to file a legal complaint against Lukashenko with prosecutors investigating Sunday’s incident.

Later on today he protested on the Belarusian border along with dozens of Belarusian and Lithuanian journalists.

Air links cut

The UN civil aviation agency was meanwhile due to hold an urgent meeting today to discuss Belarus after Western powers on the UN Security Council called on it to investigate Minsk’s diversion of the Ryanair flight carrying Protasevich.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council will meet as the consequences of the incident play out in Europe’s airspace.

EU countries are banning Belarusian carriers and the EU has also urged airlines to avoid Belarusian airspace.

Today, Austrian Airlines said it had cancelled a Vienna-Moscow flight after Russian authorities did not approve a route change for it to avoid Belarusian airspace.

An Air France flight from Paris to Moscow yesterday had to be cancelled for the same reason.

The ICAO has no power to impose sanctions. But European leaders this week agreed to cut air links with Belarus and told airlines to avoid the country’s airspace.

The call at the UN for the ICAO investigation echoes an earlier one from NATO. But Russia’s support for Minsk means the UN Security Council is unlikely to agree a collective statement.

‘Europe’s last dictator’

A defiant Lukashenko said he had “acted lawfully to protect our people” from an alleged bomb threat on the plane, in an address to parliament yesterday.

The criticism was nothing more than another attempt by his opponents to undermine his rule, he added.

Lukashenko – often dubbed “Europe’s last dictator” – is facing some of the strongest international pressure of his nearly 27 years ruling ex-Soviet Belarus.

He and his allies are already under a series of Western sanctions over a brutal crackdown on mass protests that followed his disputed re-election to a sixth term last August.

But he continues to enjoy solid support from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is hosting the Belarusian leader tomorrow.

@Seán Ó Briain: Ah yeah sure we might aswell do that! I don’t think it’ll stop them flying their oldest propeller powered bombers into our airspace for the craic, testing how long it takes for our air traffic control to send out the SOS to our big bro Boris to scramble the fighter jets! Maybe we can call on our neighbour and big bro Boris to help stop the Russians from hacking our healthcare system in the same phone call? Or just maybe, we can invest in our own air defence systems like a primary radar to detect incursions from hostile aircraft or proper cyber security? Not a bad shout eh?! Even as a neutral country we should have these basic defences set up. Without it, we are the potential soft spot and easy access point for any hostile nation. The gateway to the EU if you will. Time to invest in our defences. The world is changing, we need to adapt!

@Niall Ó Cofaigh: flew vladivostok to japan on an auld tupelo for 100 quid. The thing stank of kerosine and we had to board the back first to “not unbalance the plane”. Food and coffee on a 2 hour flight. The thing took off like a rocket down a concrete runway with all the overhead compartments opening and stuff falling out. One of the best flights of my life. Fly aeroflot or Ryanair anyday.

The opportunity to agree some neutral space (Belarus & Ukraine) was in the aftermath of 9/11, when Russia was fully supportive of the US and the wider western world. But this period coincided with the eastern European nations including Poland and the Baltic states joining the EU, and at the same time Nato expanded right up to the Russian border.

Every tussle after that is a result of this, up to Europarlementarians climbing Kiev barricades, the annexation of Crimea & incursions into Ukraine plus the horrific downing of MH17. It’s two blocs on an inertic path to confrontation, having missed the opportunity for stability because nobody was thinking about how to accomodate the fact that there might be two blocs in the first place, so shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. So events went asynchronously and uncoordinated, and now it’s too late.
