Pharmacists to begin administering Covid-19 vaccines from today

The system will open for people over the age of 50 today.

IRISH PHARMACISTS WILL begin administering Covid-19 vaccines from today.

People over the age of 50 who have not yet received a vaccine will be eligible to get a jab from their local pharmacy today.

More than 1,000 pharmacists are expected to administer vaccines to members of the public, and appointments can be made on pharmacists’ individual websites rather than via the HSE portal.

A small number of Johnson & Johnson vaccines are to be made available to pharmacies to vaccinate those who have missed out on a vaccine or who have not been able to get to a vaccination centre.

Some mRNA vaccines could be made available at a later date.

Pharmacists are due to get €25 per vaccine dose administered, the same figure as GPS, plus €10 for each patient who is entered into the system.

Darragh O’Loughlin, Secretary General of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) said earlier this month that the move would prevent people from having to travel long distances to vaccination centres.

“People have been clamouring to get vaccinated in their local pharmacy, by their local pharmacist, and there’s been a lot of public frustration that’s just taken so long to get the vaccines delivered to pharmacies,” he said.

“But certainly the objective now is to vaccinate people in their local community, rather than them all having to travel to vaccination centres.”

Anyone over 50 has had ample opportunity to avail of a vaccine by now. Vast majority of covid spread is in the under 35s. Get the single jab out to them and let us open up and stay open. #avaition #live gigs # nite clubs # normal attendance levels at matches.

@Peter O Donnell: good luck to that, we have people who think pods at festivals is a great idea, think night clubs should be a thing of the past and want only half full stadium’s, cos they don’t want anyone sitting beside them unless it’s in their “bubble”. Even when we get a large part of the population done by August with vaccines, there seems to be many who are enjoying these new restrictions on numbers at events etc.

@Peter O Donnell: You’ve missed the point of the article. Some over 50s people could not travel to vaccination centres. They will now only have to travel as far as their local pharmacy.

@Peter O Donnell: that could lead to alot of women in that age refusing the vaccine though because the risk of clots from J&J is highest in women under 50.

@Michael Healy: Yes those that go to the events are enjoying themselves whilst the vaccination rollout is going along just nicely.

Michael are you projecting here your own bias. I don’t know a single person who wants half full stadiums forever? Or for nightclubs never to be open, what is with the over the top theatrics? 30% of the population are fully vaccinated. 60 to 69s are still waiting on their second dose. It’s been 1 week of the outdoor dining and looking at the photos it looks lovely, I can only speak for Dublin

The pedestrian areas I hope they keep post covid and they improve on it.

@Peter O Donnell: Let us stay open 70% of the population haven’t received their second dose. England is in serious trouble and looking at locking down again. But yes lets open everything up. It’ll be fine.

@Ally Mc Culladgh: the UK aren’t locking down again, they just aren’t lifting all the restrictions for another few weeks. And despite the cute bunnies and rainbows of hysteria around the silver bullet vaccines, covid will still he here after everyone is sorted and more variants will likely pop up, this is where we need to learn to live with this. Plus it’s going to be hard to tell people to lockdown and stay away when supports are being wound down or cut and taxes are going up cos guess what, the variant all the lockdown fanatics ignored is here, and no amount of vaccines will stop the economic variant as its already and continues to destroy the financial future of many…

@Peter O Donnell: Not everyone can get to a vaccination centre. Not everyone has a car, can afford a taxi, lives on a bus route, etc. My nephew (disabled) was offered an early vaccine…in a completely different county.

@Ally Mc Culladgh: maybe i am mistaken here, but I was pretty sure indoor dining was not closing again in the UK. In fact, I think what has happened is they have delayed the last round of restrictions being lifted – i.e no marks, nightclubs allowed open, no social distancing and the rule of 6 indoors being abolished. No where that i have read has stated indoor dining was being closed or they would be any changes to how things currently operate in the UK. That might change, who knows. But to currently say the UK are “locking down again” is incredibly misleading and categorically false. Stop spinning stories to meet your agenda.

Why are they only able to vaccinate over 50s? Surely there can’t be that many people over 50 still waiting for a vaccine?

That’s a nice little earner for the Chemists €35 per injection plus €10 bonus. So much for the idea that the vaccine will be made available to every one in the world for free or very little cost as it is for the greater good for humanity. Nice one Pharma.

@Gareth Jenkins: Well in fairness if you were asked to give up your time (or ability to earn money) in exchange for vaccinating people all day long for months I’m sure you would have something to say about it if you weren’t compensated

400,000 over 60′s haven’t received their 2 Astrazeneca vaccine yet and it looks like they won’t any time soon, it’s 8 weeks since I got my first jab.
