HSE says progress through 35-39 age group will be 'slower' due to volumes and vaccine supplies

People in this age cohort will be able to register for their vaccine from Sunday.

LAST UPDATE | 17 Jun 2021

HSE CEO PAUL Reid has said the the 35-39 age group may take longer to move through, as the health service gets ready to open up registration to this cohort.

The registration portal will be open for those aged 35-39 from this Sunday, with this aged 39 being asked to register on the first day, followed by those aged 38 on Monday and so on.

Speaking at today’s HSE briefing, Reid said:

“Just to flag up front, this will be a slower age group to move through based on volume, but particularly based on the high level of dose twos we’ll have to do and also the fact that we do move to two supply lines in July, which is Moderna and Pfizer.”

Over 2.3 million people have now received a first dose or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Close to 1.2 million have received their second dose, or the single-dose vaccine, and are fully vaccinated.

Reid said this means 61% of the adult population have received one dose and close to one third are fully vaccinated.

Vaccine take-up has been strong, he said:

  • Almost 100% of those over 80;
  • 97% of those aged 70-79;
  • 92% of those aged 60-69;
  • 87% for those aged 50-59.

To register for a vaccination through the online portal, you need:

People in this age cohort can register online through the HSE website or by phone by calling 1800 851 500. For anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing, there is a HSE text line they can contact at 086 1800 661.

The move to vaccinate people in their 30s comes as the vaccination delivery programme reaches a new high, with the Taoiseach saying that about 340,000 doses can now be delivered in a week.

The push is part of the government’s aim to have 70% of adults in the country fully vaccinated by the end of July.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris said that he was “very optimistic” about the return to on-campus lectures for students in part due to the vaccine roll-out.

“We have some way to go in terms of getting from here to September, in terms of weeks of vaccinations left, and we’re doing probably over 300,000 vaccines a week now so we’re very optimistic. Students will also benefit not just from individual vaccination but from the overall societal benefits of having so many people vaccinated by that stage,” he said.

If you ring the HSE before the three weeks, they’ll tell you to ring back after 3 weeks so not much point.

So they delayed opening the portal – I’d prefer them open in when they’re ready to take in the registrations rather than opening it just because. I mean if they opened it last Monday and you didn’t get called for a while because they opened the registration early would you be complaining about that? Do you just want to complain?

    Another PR stunt. Apart from a few isolated centres in the Midlands, Cork and limerick, most of the other centres have still to start the 40,41, 42 and 43 years old yet. With that age group still waiting for confirmed appointments. The 38, 39 years will be able to register soon but they won’t be getting jabs until 1st or 2nd week of July in the majority of vaccination centres.

    @RJ: I’m early 30s and everyone I know (bar one person who is an anti-vaxxer) wants to be vaccinated and can’t wait to be done.

    I’m 41 and… Can’t make this up, I was just about to comment that I’m still waiting for my first appointment and then my phone buzzed. My appointment text came through. Actually it came through about a half hour ago, it was something else that buzzed and I finally saw it.
    Anyway, I registered June 3rd so that’s 2 weeks and they say within 3.

    Any chance we can get can update on the total vaccinated numbers? Every other country seems to manage it. Surely the cyber attack is not responsible. It seems to be update once a week

    @Joe: Yeah I don’t understand that either. Surely if they’re able to provide weekly figures, they can do daily figures too. So why the change?

    For anyone still waiting for a text, you can log back in to the portal (https://vaccine3.hse.ie/s/login/)
    It will tell you about your appointment there even if the text hasn’t come through yet.

    Hearing some great reports and some not so great reports about waiting times at various vaccination centres. The one I was at was horrendous, even the gardai were called to it as the traffic waiting to get into the location was blocking a main road. A 2+ hour queue time before you even got near the door of the centre, madness. Heard a lot of people say they won’t be back for the 2nd dose!!!

    Today is 14 days since I registered (likely get sent to Citywest) still no text, neither has a friend in Lucan. Yet I know plenty of people who are younger who are fully done via their GP as they had already done their older patients. I’m in Cohort 7 but was part of #TheForgottenCohort as my GP opted out of doing under 70s, and I’m not currently under the care of a consultant/hospital.

    I have also seen reports of people registering but not turning up/cancelling last min or worse turning up but refusing to sign the consent form as some type of protest from the anti-vaxers. By doing this, they slow everything down and could result in wasted vaccine.

    I’m 15-20 min from Citywest and Punchestown and would gladly take a last minute appointment.
