NEW FIGURES REVEAL that more than 6,500 pregnancy terminations were carried out in Ireland last year.
According to the second Annual Report on the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018, a total of 6,577 terminations were carried out in 2020.
The figure represents a slight drop on the previous year, when 6,666 terminations were carried out.
The vast majority of the terminations (6,455) were carried out under section 12 of the act, which permits termination without restriction up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.
A total of 97 were carried out because of a fatal foetal anomaly, 20 took place due to a risk to life or health and the remaining five were carried out under section 10 of the act, where there is risk to life or health of the pregnant woman in an emergency.
Dublin was the woman or girl’s county of residence in the case of 2,414 of the terminations, 645 lived in Cork, 278 lived in Limerick and 274 in Galway.
The report showed that Northern Ireland was the place of residence notified in 36 cases, while eight notifications recorded the place of residence as outside of Ireland.
The highest number of terminations (709) took place in the month of January.
The Abortion Rights Campaign said the statistics show that abortion is “very much an essential service.”
Campaign spokesperson Helen Stonehouse said: “What is not captured in this report is how many people were refused abortion in Ireland, how many had to travel long distances within Ireland or beyond, and how much distress was caused by the unnecessary barriers within the current abortion law.
Despite the legalisation of abortion, we know that many people continue to face stigma and shame when accessing abortion care in Ireland.
Anti-abortion campaigners labelled the figures “devastating”.
“It is an outrage that over €20 million of taxpayers’ money has been spent on abortion provision to date and not a cent on positive alternatives to abortion,” Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign said.
Data published by the British department of health and social care earlier this month revealed that 194 abortions were performed on women and girls who gave addresses in the Republic of Ireland in 2020.

Good lord, what is going on? I can’t really comment on the case itself, but these attacks (head injuries in the early hours) are becoming way to frequent and it’s just a matter of time before there is a fatality.
Fatality or not, there will be little justice for the perpetrators of these crimes. Our justice system is a joke. May this lady have a speedy recovery

The accused had his sentence postponed until he finished his FAS course. Imagine it a convicted killer allowed to finish a course. Ireland is beyond a joke
A case of a Tullamore man put a Bean Garda out of work for 18 months after responding to reports of two men kicking Taxis and breaking windows. Judge Carmel Stewart imposed a 240 hour Community Service Order on the 23 year old. Second case this week where a Garda was seriously injured and the sentence was Community Service. WTF ! Only in Ireland !
This is getting a lot of publicity and I’m wondering why? Happening every night of the week around the country but It seems the media loves a story about Limerick.
Its been a long time since the media had anything remotely juicy from Limerick. Not since the good people there stood up to the s*um who tried to take over.I don’t remember a murder in the city in over a year.Considering its unfair rep thats not bad.Infact its probably the safest city in Ireland at the moment.
The journal has been pretty good reporting on a lot of the positives in life limerick this year too to be fair

The media in general like to see Limerick as if its still in the dark days.There is a lot still to be done there but you can almost feel the change in the city.I know stories have to be reported but there seems to be a particular slant put on them when its Limerick.
Well there was a huge water protest in Limerick today, obviously not news worthy.
Yes but there are still reports weekly from the national media about incidents in Limerick that are otherwise ignored when they happen elsewhere. Limerick is by no means perfect but it gets far more attention from the media in proportion to its population.

Well I do think the journals reporting has been pretty balanced this year . Limerick is a much quiter nicer place these days . I was on Parnell street last night but it must have happened after I left. There is always a strong Garda presence on that street too it has to be said.
Live in Dublin myself, originally from Limerick. New shooting/crash/stabbing/fire every single morning. Every morning. Not one day has the radio not reported an incident.
