THERE WILL BE “approximately” 1,000 cases of Covid-19 reported in Ireland today, HSE chief Paul Reid has said.
Speaking at the weekly HSE press briefing, Reid said “cases, most likely, will continue to rise from every day on now”.
“Yesterday, as you know, we saw one of the highest numbers of cases in one day since February,” he said.
“We know and expect that today’s cases will be approximately 1,000,” Reid added.
“Any look forward ahead would clearly demonstrate this is on a very significant rise of case numbers.”
Public health officials yesterday confirmed a further 783 cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
The Department of Health reported that 73 patients with the illness were in hospital yesterday, including 20 in intensive care units.

Niamh O’Beirne, National Lead for Testing and Tracing, told the press briefing that the testing system is now in surge, exceeding 20,000 tests per day.
The positivity rate over last week was 5.9% across community test centres, O’Beirne said, adding that yesterday the rate was 7.8%.
She said staff are seeing more travel-related cases from holiday destinations such as Spain, Portugal and the UK.
Over the last few days, around 5% of positive cases were vaccinated people, O’Beirne added.
Speaking at yesterday’s briefing, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said there had been 12 deaths in June, and one so far in July.
Dr Glynn said the latest data is showing clear increases in incidence of disease right across the country.
“There is no question that the delta variant is having a considerable impact of transmission of Covid-19,” said Glynn, noting that the Delta variant also appears to be presenting with a different variety of symptoms including headache, sore throat and blocked or runny nose.
“If you have any symptoms of a cold or flu it is vital that you isolate immediately and arrange a test,” he added.
Indoor dining
The Chief Medical Officer yesterday advised parents that it is safer not to bring children into indoor dining settings.
Dr Tony Holohan said for those who wished to go out with their children, “dining outdoors is still possible”.
The indoor dining legislation, passed late last night, will see fully vaccinated people and people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the last six months allowed to eat and drink indoors.
Under the new rules, children of fully vaccinated people will also be permitted to enter indoors if they are with their parent or guardian.
Speaking this morning, the Taoiseach: “We need to trust people too. This is a collective effort as a society to try and deal with an unprecedented global pandemic, which has many twists and turns the most recent now being the Delta variant.”
He added: “The numbers are rising case numbers are rising, hospitalisations are rising. So we need to be very vigilant. And people need to take the advice of the chief medical officer in respect of this seriously. But at the same time, you know, in terms of government, I think government has created a good balance here.”

@Hugo Bugo: Those in the 60-69 age group, with underlying conditions, who were given the AstraZeneca vaccine and who have yet to receive, or have only just received, their second jab. I’ve a parent in that group, extremely vulnerable due to underlying conditions and is still not fully protected yet.
@Hugo Bugo: Anti vax obviously, the very young and under 12′s have a natural immunity and aren’t at risk, there’s always a tiny minority who cant take vaccinations, stop trying to scare people off.
@Hugo Bugo: people in the 60 to 69 group are still waiting on their second jab. People 18 to 34 have not been vaccinated, my colleague is 21 and has asthma, he’s vulnerable but just has to wait his turn. I have a family member who’s to sick to receive his vaccine and although he’s cocooning he’s in and out of hospital, as cases rises the numbers in hospital will rise putting him at risk, there are lots of people in this situation, the numbers in hospital is very valid information for him. So no the vulnerable are not all vaccinated, that is just a selfish comment repeated regularly from folk who have little empathy for anyone but themselves

@Pat Breen: who should have received it ages ago? My 62 year old friend who’s waiting on his az second jab, my 21 year old asthmatic colleague or my relative who is too sick too receive it? None of them should have received it ages ago they either have to wait their turn or hope their health will improve enough to be able to take it. My point is not all vulnerable are vaccinated.
@Hugo Bugo: we vaccinate babies the whole time, which means 3, 6, 12 year olds have all received their vaccines.
The great irony is that most people probably would have taken the vaccine, as long as they felt it was their own free will. Whats happening now is just wrong, and will only encourage more to stand their ground.
Ive been pro vax all my life, but ive always been pro choice. some people cant take it, for instance or have serious concerns about it. Even if you believed some of the insane stories its still your right not to take it.
This is a slippery slope that i can’t see simply end in september. Who knows what other areas of life it might go into. We’ve all had a tough year, and most people did follow the rules for others safety, but we’ve been at each others throat’s for just about everything over the last year. This is the last thing we need as it only creates more division. Unfortunately there will always be cases, but as long as vulnerable people are protected to the best of our ability, cases shouldnt really be a concern. We need to live with this and move on.
@mark connolly: If you’re pro choice around vaccines you’re not really pro vaccine. Its everyone’s right not to be vaccinated or not to vaccinate their kids but they shouldn’t expect school places etc if they make that choice. Anyone who can get vaccinated for anything, be it covid or measles or bleedin’ polio, should do so in order to shield the people who are vulnerable and can’t. There are plenty of cases of Parent A deciding not to vaccinate Kid A, who causes a measles outbreak which causes permanent damage to Kid B who was immunocompromised and couldn’t receive a vaccine. This is really basic stuff, I’m all for personal freedom but if you choose not to take a jab then go be free far away from me thanks.

@mark connolly: if there are people who had planned to get the vaccine but are now deciding not to because this government along with pretty much every government in the world are considering introducing restrictions for unvaccinated people, well then they’re i d i o t s. Imagine having such a low IQ that you think…. Yeah I’m getting the vaccine to protect myself, oh wait the government wants me to? Well then I’m not getting it. To enter certain countries in South America you need a yellow fever vaccine. Don’t want the yellow fever vaccine? Well that’s your choice but you won’t be visiting certain countries.
In this case, they simply can’t sit inside a restaurant! This entitled, demanding, first world attitude we have to everything is very dangerous.

Also in each of NPHETs models the exact same percentages were used for calculating hospitalisations, icu and deaths for each scenario from the covid cases. Hardly realistic. We know that the HSE are using PCR tests up to 45 cycles which is too high & goes against all recommendations. We also know they are going against NPHET advice & deploying antigen testing for their own staff. So now that cases are going to massively rise, could the HSE run test events using antigen alongside PCR that would put these numbers into perspective? How many of these 1k cases had no symptoms whatsoever & used one of the walk-in facilities? I’m sure that can be easily provided. And if antigen was ran alongside PCR tests, then we’d know how many of the 1k are actually infectious. Just a thought because this recent study proves antigen is much more effective than NPHET say. @Dave: antigen testing effective for symptomatic cases, not great for asymptomatic cases
@Kevin Thompson: The Delta variant has a viral load 1000 time higher than the previous variant, that makes it considerably easier to detect using antigen testing. I’ve change my mind in antigen testing, they should be used, in parallel with PCR.

@Kevin Thompson: Not great compared to what? False positive 45 cycle PCR testing? It’s not good enough anymore for NPHET to turn their noses up, demand more evidence & then ignore evidence when it comes. They just sit back & expect other countries to do the studies. Why can’t they do their own using the HSE? The same HSE they are members of that is rolling it out for its own staff. So if antigen is not great, why are the HSE prepared to use one test for its own staff & another for the public?

What is actually going on in this country? We are seeing life getting back to normal in countries all across Europe but yet all we seem to be facing is another lockdown. These guys have been running the country for 18 months and we seem no closer to any sort of normal life. Back in April last year the line being used was that once there was a vaccination in place we could see restrictions being lifted. The line was always that once hospital admissions, ICU admissions, deaths all dropped, that things would get back to normal. Now, 18 months later we sit here with over 2 million people vaccinated, very few hospital admissions and very few ICU cases but apparently we are in a worse position now than we were? This has gone on way too long and people really have had enough.

@Jonathan Tuohy: lots of countries are reimpsoing some restrictions and as far as I’m aware nobody has mentioned anything about going back into lockdown, in fact inddor dining opening shows that clearly they don’t want another lockdown.

We are not locking down we have slowed opening up and thats been done to slow down the spread of the virus as we don’t have enough people vaccinated yet.
We have one of the best rates in Europe of fully vaccinated but in AZs case it takes 3 weeks to be fully effective.
So they are playing safe. Look at the countries that have not done that and the massive rise in cases they are having a quarter of a million new casses in the UK in a week. a 411% increase in Holland.
So being cautious is the right thing to do

@Roisin Lyons: All they can do is follow the hospitalisations and ICU admissions. I’m afraid we’re playing it by ear again and hoping the vaccines keep the pressure off the health system. Hopefully we’ll have no more lockdowns but I wouldn’t rule out a circuit-breaker (God I hate that term.)

If they implemented mass rapid testing everywhere ages ago indoor dining would be open a while a ago and probably less covid in the community because new cases being picked up earlier. We would have a better handle on it and have testing procedures in place everywhere. Tony got that wrong, Denmark for instance got it right…… On the other side cases will go up now but hospitisations and deaths will stay relatively low. UK figures prove that with the delta variant and vaccinations. Unfortunately after a year and a half being fixated on the daily cases we’re brainwashed into thinking its all about the daily cases. Its mostly about hospitalisations and deaths which wont be anywhere near previous wave numbers courtesy of the vaccine

All the vulnerable are vaccinated so must be all the under 40s that are part of these cases. Giving us case numbers is one thing but being a bit more specific of what age group these are like we got in the past would be more precise.
Hopefully they don’t end up in hospital and maybe more cases the better. we will have herd immunity sooner and can go back to the old days

If people go to another country they are “selfish gits” even following the public health advise, vaccination etc., but people can holiday in ireland, unvaccinated take no tests or precautions, dine inside the hotels etc etc and thats totally fine with you? What is this new fixation on “travelling abroad”? People purposely going to belfast to party and returning to ireland not isolating, taking a test or advising their soon to be close contacts of their recent travels…that i see the issue with.

I will be fully vaccinated by September and have absolutely zero intentions of putting my life on hold for one second longer. Metric has no meaning anymore. We know that even with the vaccine you can get COVID BUT.. severe symptom reduced significantly. So sorry to say but we need to measure in terms of deaths or ICU which is pretty flat all considered. The high risk are vaccinated let’s open up. More chance of being hit by a bu…..-ahhhhhh
They as in the Government are afraid of lives to give the real figure.6 countries had 1083, I would think the rest of Ireland would be far higher than approximately 1,000.
How is there an increase of cases in people returning from holiday when it’s a finable offence to leave the country for non-essential reasons until July 19th?
