Burst water main impacts supply for thousands in Kerry

Disruption is expected to continue throughout the morning.

WORK IS UNDERWAY to restore water supplies to thousands in Co Kerry after a water main burst yesterday evening.

The county’s two biggest towns of Tralee and Killarney were impacted, as well as Castleisland, Firies, Farranfore, Castlemaine, Ballymacelligot , Fenit and surrounding areas.

Tralee was already experiencing reduced supply.

Disruption is expected to continue throughout the morning.

“Dedicated water service crews were mobilised and repairs have been underway through the night and this morning,” a statement from Irish Water read.

“The section of burst pipe has been repaired and crews are working to gradually reintroduce water to the network. It is expected that water supply will begin to return to customers over the course of the day.”

Irish Water and Kerry County Council are organising for water tankers to be deployed in a number of areas.

@DB: sorry, nothing to do with Irish water propaganda. Been onto my mother at home and tralee is without water at present. This is not good for anybody but particularly harsh on business trying to reopen. No water = no kitchens etc.

After decades of ignoring our vast water infrastructure, it’s now close to collapse all over the country – ridiculous stuff

@Eoin McLove: Most Irish streets have 100 year old pipes with thousands of leaks. It’ll take decades to fix most of them.

@Homes: They spent over a billion settings up a untlity company and installing meter. Wouldn’t it have been better to use that billion to fix the problems. Be honest how many years of billing people will it take for Irish water to earn that billion back?

@Roy Dowling: no it wouldn’t. It would have been better to force it through and we would be in a more sustainable position now. Fresh Water isn’t free. Most developed countries recognized that a long time ago. If people would rather pay through extra taxes then so be it.

@Homes: or maybe not sink millions into installing water meters instead of fixing the leaks first.

@Homes: feel free to make voluntary contributions to Irish Water if it will sooth your conscience. I sleep soundly knowing my water is paid for through general taxation.

@Homes: When/if I ever receive fresh drinkable water in my home id be happy to pay for it. Water that arrives in my tap is cloudy and needs to be filtered or boiled to drink. instead of fixing the issue Irish water want to charge me for it. Tell me would you be happy to pay for poor quality water.

@Homes: while I appreciate your argument, it has a flaw. Water is a necessity if life. While you are paying taxes, the provision of water should be included from the onset. Not bolted on cause the EU wanted to to be. Reality is, like lots of things success governments have ignored this issue

@Joecantdance: my neighbors have an unwell elderly person at home but thanks to people like you can’t get water for her care. No access to a tanker. But by all means flush your pallet load.
