PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS have confirmed 2,098 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
The latest figures from the Department of Health record 251 patients with Covid-19 in hospital, including 52 in ICU.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan said: “For the second time in a week, we are reporting over 2,000 cases.
We haven’t seen this number of cases since late January 2021. This is a concerning indication of the level of Covid-19 circulating in our communities.
Yesterday, there were 1,818 new cases confirmed and 244 people with Covid-19 in hospital, with 52 in ICU.
Deaths are being announced weekly – as of Wednesday, 5,074 people have died with Covid-19 in Ireland.
A total of 6.5 million vaccines have been administered in Ireland to date – 3.5 million first doses and three million second doses.
Almost 72,000 teenagers aged 12 to 15 have received a vaccine since registration opened for the cohort, with 124,000 signing up for one so far.
“Covid-19 vaccines are very effective against severe illness from Covid-19 and are protecting people from needing care in hospital and ICU,” Dr Holohan said today.
“While it is possible for fully vaccinated individuals to become infected with Covid-19 and pass the virus on to others, vaccines also remain effective in significantly reducing this risk. That is why it is vital for as many people as possible to come forward for vaccination against this disease,” he added.
Details for the next stage of easing Covid-19 restrictions are due to be published at the end of this month after meetings among public health officials next week.
The plan is expected to cover how Ireland handles the pandemic from September through the winter and a further relaxing of restrictions later in September.
The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet on Wednesday, followed be a meeting of the government’s Covid-19 subcommittee on Friday.

The case numbers mean nothing with context of how many have been vaccinated.

@Alan Martin: same here; I got vaccine in May and July, Astra Zeneca! Don’t know how I picked up the virus as I take great care. Felt bad enough for about 5 days but gone after about 8 days. I see data saying the AZ gives less protection than the mRNAs against Delta.
Why are the HSE removing unvaccinated people from the organ transplant list?
@Shay Redmond.: because post transplant the patients are immuno-compromised, so even a mild dose could be fatal to them and their fellow patients. They are also not removing them, they have said heightened risk assessments will have to be conducted as some patients can’t take the vacinne regardless and the relative risk of covid versus vaccination versus transplant delay would have to be assessed.
@Shay Redmond.: Because they would have to undergo major surgery with a pandemic in place and if they caught covid without being vaccinated they would have no chance of survival.
They are multiplying the risks and making it not worth it.

People who are immuno compromised, particularly after something like a transplant, are at extremely high risk of serious illness or death from getting COVID. So it is very clear why this is being looked at. You can’t get a liver transplant if you don’t stop drinking. You can’t get a lung transplant if you don’t stop smoking.

No need to panic. The hospitalisations and ICU cases aren’t sky rocketing in line with case numbers like before. Every case who gets it and has a mild illness has some naturally acquired immunity coming into the winter season and this will be a step closer to herd immunity. This has to be taken into consideration in announcements made on restrictions in the coming weeks. Why the fixation on case numbers?

Im not vaccinated. Who is more at risk of transmitting the virus to her or many like her, me or you. Answer is we are as likely as eachother because we can both still catch and transmit it. So where is the “vaccine” they talk about, non existent if you ask me. But thats not to say vulnerable people shouldnt take this medicine to protect them selves

Numbers are up all across Europe, we are staying more or less in the same spot every day.
They did say there would be a lot of cases when we opened up as we have and thats what has happened.
We just have to keep going.

While I strongly support your ‘we have to keep going’ attitude, we shouldn’t post uninformed or erroneous comments here or anywhere else.
Are these ‘official’ numbers correct? Who knows (excuse the pun)? What I do know is that government policy is enacted based on these numbers and tendencies.
Ireland needs to get its kids back to school (there seems to be far too much neurosis in Ireland about this – Spanish kids, for example, went back to school last September and it went just fine), its staff back to the office and apply whatever measures are deemed necessary to get us back to our lives as we knew them in Feb ’20.
If you’re unwilling to take the risk of setting foot outside your house, then by all means stay indoors. Fully vaxxed, fp2-wearing folk like me want to get back at it.
You can only take so much of being indoors before your mental health starts to wane. Once it goes, good luck getting it back.

@Mary O Dwyer: as of 2 days ago 83% of adults fully vaxd, 90% with atleast one. Even with those figures, its in a reduced capacity OUTDOOR stadium which is safe, especially as masks must be worn as well (Whether they are or not is a diff story but its a GAA requirement). Indoor pubs/dining are vaccinated only. This is why we’re vaccinating, so we can live somewhat normally again…… If the pubs in Munster are like the one in Kerry it wont have much to do with the 40,000 spectators at the match, unless they dont drink at the match and drive home for the celebrations….. Should we cancel the match so theres nothing to celebrate? Should we close indoor only pubs again so people can only misbehave outdoors? We’re going to have to live along side it as its not going for a year ot two atleast

I’m done with it all. It looks like it’s here forever and is always a step ahead of us. Read today that the vaccines lose efficacy every month. It’s just never ending. I can’t follow it anymore, or read about it anymore. I’m done. Looks like everyone will just get it at some point. I’m not inviting it in or anything, but I just can’t worry about it anymore, or hope governments can do something. They’re the worst part of all this, constantly picking groups to blame, tryna get everyone else to shame whatever group is responsible this wave. While we constantly see them flouting the rules they set. Eff it all.

I’m lost at this stage. My gut tells me travelling etc has been opened up too soon but I’m not even sure of that any more.
@Anna Carr: travel accounts for less than 4% of cases and is the typical scapegoat. Less cases per capita abroad in most countries than here so abroad is safer in most places. Its more likely complacency among the younger generations who are out enjoying themselves socialising, some have been like that for a year now. Under 35s account for around 75% of daily cases. Majority are 16 – 30. If living with parents they’re bound to bring it home and infect their parents even if they are vaccinated. Youth are fed up at this stage and I cant blame them.
