Courts Service warns of phone scam using what appears to be one of its own numbers

It warned the public not to engage with the caller if they receive such a call.

THE COURTS SERVICE has warned the public of a scam phone call currently in operation that appears to involve one of its own numbers.

The Service said it has been made aware of fraudulent calls appearing to come from a number associated with the Dublin Circuit Court Family Law Office, 01 888 6806.

It warned the public not to engage with the caller if they receive such a call.

“If members of the public receive such a call, please do not engage with the caller and do not share any part of your PPS number, bank account details or any other personal information with the caller,” the Courts Service said in a statement.

There have been a number of similar scams in circulation in recent months.

In April, the Department of Social Protection warned the public of a fraudulent phone call in operation that appears to involve one of its own numbers, similar to that of the Courts Service scam.

A few days prior to this warning, the Department reported a “sophisticated” scam in which people are told that their PPS number has been compromised before being asked to provide their name, PPS number and bank details.

In June, gardaí warned the public of scam phone calls that appear to come from a real garda station.

An Garda Síochána received reports of people receiving phone calls from fraudsters who claim to be members of the force.

The number making the call appears to be the phone number of a genuine station.

If a member of the public believes they have received such a phone call or text, gardaí say they should contact their bank and the department’s helpline number.

I receive daily at least one, sometimes two calls apparently originating from within Ireland.
Usually they start by saying my account details have been compromised. I usually interrupt them mid sentence and sometimes ask what the weather is like in Mumbai

@Richarddoherty: Richard, what about people who run small businesses: restaurateurs, plumbers, carpenters, etc. Are they to stop taking calls from potential customers?

@Richarddoherty: Thanks Richard, I took your advice and I’ve missed two MRIs, a teeth clean and of course two job interviews. At this rate it will cost me more than if I was scammed to be begin with.

    @Richarddoherty: stupid advice.
We run a small family business with customers complaining we never get back to them. When we point out ours calls to them they say they thought they were scam calls. Answer the phone and if its a scam call hang up.

Missed one of these today. They’re getting more clever. However, I found it odd why the Dublin Circuit Family Court would be getting in touch with someone in Limerick who has never had any dealings up there.

Got one of these calls this morning.
Very authentic as they get you to check the number they are calling from which I did and it comes up as the Courts.
As I had been self employed years ago and always tried to make sure with my accountant that everything was paid ahead of time I was dubious about the call. Once they said it was from 2015 to 2021 I knew I had been a fully paid up PAYE employee with one of the largest private employers in the country for all that time I knew I was ok. I was threatened with a Gaurdee being sent to my door and all sorts of nonsense.
Once that happened I knew this was a con call.
    Please be very careful people.
I hope they rot in hell.
