FSAI recalls food supplements due to unsafe levels of THC

THC is the active ingredient in cannabis which gets users high.

THE FOOD SAFETY Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued a recall notice on a selection of food supplements in Ireland which have unauthorised levels of THC in them.

The FSAI found that “unsafe Levels of delta‐9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were detected in certain batches of CBD” and they were being immediately recalled.

The cannabis plant contains a range of cannabinoids – some of which are psychoactive. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is psychoactive and is considered a narcotic.

In Ireland, THC is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Acts 1977.

The affected products are:

Retailers have been instructed to remove the products from sale.

An FSAI spokesperson said: “Food businesses that have sold the implicated batches of unauthorised novel CBD food supplements to consumers must display a point-of-sale notice in store and on websites if sold online, to inform consumers that the implicated batches of these unauthorised novel CBD food supplements are being recalled and the reason why.”

Unsafe or unauthorised ? There’s quite a difference between the 2. It would take incredibly high levels of THC to pose any risk to humans but it only takes trace amounts for it to be illegal such is the farce of our prohibition laws.

@Bob Doran: The LD50 of THC is estimated to be 1.2 grams of pure THC per KG of body weight. 70-100g of pure THC injected all at once might cause mortallity issues. Plenty have tried and none have suceeded.

@Bob Doran: While it’s theoretically possible, it’s practically impossible to overdose on THC. Sure, you might overdo it and get a case of the whities but it’s not going to kill you or do any lasting damage. Contrast that with alcohol which is lethally toxic to humans in relatively small doses. Don’t believe everything you’re told especially when it comes to cannabis.

THC is the best thing for pain relief and insomnia I’ve ever come across. Unsafe… ehhh… no. But sure I’ll just keep going with the legal option of script for opioids and benzos instead, much better option….!

@Clare McAfee: Hey Clare I hope you’ve been able to manage your pain issues safely. Stay away from the opioids, they’re fierce addictive. The FSAI are a joke when it comes to cbd/thc.

Spoilsports, have they nothing better to be doing?
I don’t think a miniscule amount of THC is going to do anybody harm; if anything it might put a smile on their face.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) derived an acute reference of 0.001mg/kg (1µg/kg body weight) for THC in 2015.

Taking a 70kg person as an example, this acute reference dose means that the consumption  of less than 0.07mg (70µg) of THC is unlikely to cause any effect.

Do they give details of levels that were present?

This is such nonsense it reminds me of something you hear about Ireland and the Catholic Church in the past.

CBD products undoubtedly save countless lives every year by preventing people for becoming addicted to actually unsafe and highly addictive opioids pain killers which have caused an epidemic of addiction and deaths from overdosing in the US.

Nobody has ever died from a THC overdose and the quantities here are minuscule.

    Farce.

They have done regarding an actually unsafe additive titanium dioxide present in many products in Ireland.
Enforcing that means a big inconvenience to large pharmaceutical companies.

EFSA’s experts no longer consider titanium dioxide safe when used as a food additive.

EFSA’s scientific advice will be used by risk managers (the European Commission, Member States) to inform any decisions they take on possible regulatory actions.

What have EPA of Ireland they done?

FSAI are following the standards set by the European Food Safety Authority on food safety, which is their remit, keeping consumers safe.

2015 the EFSA set the safety limit – acute reference dose ( ARfD ) for the consumption of THC at 0.001mg/kg of body weight.

This sets a level of daily or short-term consumption where no psychoactive effects would be expected. Therefore, a serving containing less than 0.1mg of THC is considered safe for a 100 kg adult.

In reality most studies have seen THC levels around 5mg (some closer to 2.5mg) before any observable psycho-active effects. So the ARfD is set at nearly 40x observable levels. That’s a BIG safety margin.

Saying that at least the FSAI are not taking the hardened stance of Zero which is technically the legal level accepted in Ireland.

I’ve written a blog on novel foods and THC safety levels. If your interested in reading further you can find it here: https://www.seshatbotanicals.com/thc-in-cbd-novel-foods/
