1. #HOMECOMING: An official homecoming for Ireland’s Olympic athletes is to be held at the Mansion House in Dublin on Wednesday afternoon following major confusion at the weekend over why no official event had been organised. Team Ireland is due to arrive back in the country later today but the Dublin Airport Authority has asked members of the public not to come to the airport to welcome the team back.
2. #WINNER: Rory McIlroy last night won the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island by a massive 8 shots, breaking the record for margin of victory set by Jack Nicklaus in 1980. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland has become the youngest player since Seve Ballesteros to win two majors, and has returned to number one in the world.
3. #DUNNE VERSUS NAMA: NAMA has launched a legal action against property developer Seán Dunne in the USA, claiming that he has hidden hundreds of millions of euros worth of assets from the agency. The Irish Independent reports that NAMA is trying to recoup some of the €185 million Dunne was ordered to repay by Irish courts earlier this year. The hearing is expected to go ahead in October.
4. #TIA SHARP: Stuart Hazell, the man accused of murdering missing 12-year-old London schoolgirl Tia Sharp, is due to appear in court later today charged with murder. 37-year-old Hazell who is the partner of Tia’s grandmother will appear via video link, reports the Guardian. Hazell was charged at the weekend after a body was discovered at the home of his partner, seven days after the 12-year-old went missing from south-east London.
5. #IRISH SUMMER: Time to break out the raincoats yet again – it looks like the warm weather at the weekend was a freak occurence which has come to an abrupt end. Met Éireann is warning of heavy thunderstorms across the east coast and the midlands this morning while AA Roadwatch has told motorists to watch out for excess surface water on some roads after heavy rain. Same old, same old…
6. #EARTHQUAKE: Rescuers are searching for survivors of the twin earthquakes which hit Iran just 11 minutes apart at the weekend. Close to 300 people are believed to be dead, around 2,600 are injured and thousands of people have been made homeless by the powerful earthquakes.
7. #LEAVING CERT RESULTS: CAO points for some college courses are expected to hit record highs when offers are made for courses after the Leaving Cert results come out on Wednesday, the Irish Times reports. The bonus points system for maths, coupled with intense competition for coveted places on science and technology courses, are believed to be behind the hike.
8. #ENGAGED: What will celebrity tabloids use for fodder now? Jennifer Aniston is engaged to marry actor Justin Theroux after he proposed at the weekend. His agent said that he received an “extraordinary gift” when Aniston accepted his proposal.
9. #CLOSING CEREMONY: The London Olympics came to a close last night after what has roundly been praised as one of the most successful Olympics of modern times. The spectacular – and at times surreal – closing ceremony featured performances from the Spice Girls, Eric Idle, Annie Lennox, George Michael, Fatboy Slim and Jessie J during the three hour ceremony. Only four years to go until Rio 2016…

I don’t get from the article what the benefits of being a data hosting hub country are? Other than perhaps prestige and increased regulatory role.
Benefits of pharma and software tech multinationals are proven, with large numbers of high paying jobs.
Data centers aren’t big scale employers, additionally they are energy hungry industries that will not help our push to meet energy reduction targets.
The associated data science careers referred to in the article, arent typically located at the data centres, we could strive to excell in these disciplins without the data centres.
As a country we need to be discerning about the type of industry that we court. If it is to be huge banks of servers, we need to insist on zero emission environmentaly friendly facilities.
To be a global data hub we need data centers! Was it 2yrs later Apple finally gave up on planning for a 1billion investment in a data center in Galway a few years ago ? In the mean time a similar project started In Denmark was complete and operational. They are now proposing to build another in Denmark where they propose to provide unwanted heat to the local community.
Is this just a backup plan ?
The real challenge is hiring academics only, the US have a growing pool of criminals to cut deals with, good hackers either go to jail or work for the state. We don’t have criminals at that level here. Couple of good professionals in Cork but I am unsure where we can get the talent to really enforce the team behind these new task forces. We need people who can reverse engineer malware, are constantly updated on backdoors in circulation, along with 0day flaws and dissect packets, that’s before we even look at the problems with hardware from certain regions.

It’s almost embarrassing to think the best in Irish tech management and government believe the data management companies like Amazon etc are here for anything other than cold weather cheap power and tax breaks
Perfect place for Data Hubs. Not to extreme weather patterns so cosy of electricity is not so high with cooling units and not really a chance of a earthquake or some other natural disaster.
Downside not great for climate change targets and don’t really employ many.
