THE NUMBER OF people registering for a Covid-19 vaccine has increased from 800-1,000 per day to more than 2,000 a day, the head of the HSE’s vaccination programme has said.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Damien McCallion said an information campaign will run over the next 10 days to encourage people to take up a vaccine.
McCallion said that over 60% of the people being treated in ICU are unvaccinated.
“We’re encouraging [people] to go forward and talk to their healthcare professional – be it in hospital or to their GP – who can perhaps talk them through and explain the benefits and risks of the vaccine.
“Those people are at very high risk of ending up in intensive care, and as [Paul Reid, HSE CEO] said yesterday, we have seen people even die as a result of receiving the Covid disease in recent times.”
McCallion said the HSE is focusing on those who have received a first dose but not a second. He said this group will receive an individual phone call.
“I think the key thing we would say to people is go to trusted sources of information.
“Be it online, such as HSE.ie, or talk to healthcare professionals – your GP, your pharmacy or your consultant.
“Particularly for those vulnerable groups, it’s really important for them, given that we’ve seen the impact in ICU and hospitals.”
It comes after public health officials yesterday confirmed 1,725 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
As of 8am on Sunday morning, there were 473 Covid-19 patients in hospital, of which 97 are in ICU.
On Saturday, there were 2,427 new cases of Covid-19, 449 people with the virus in hospital and 93 in ICU.

McCallion said vaccination centres around the country will be retained ahead of the booster programme and to relieve pressure on GP practices.
“Vaccine centres at the moment…the teams that are there are working through residential care as part of the first phase of the booster plan.
“We’re well advanced in that, in terms of people over 65 in long-term residential care. That programme will actually complete this week, and the over 80s then are being developed and worked out through our general practice.
“Again, they’re very well advanced with over 110,000 out of 160,000 people over 80 years of age already boosted.”
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) yesterday said it is concerned that the Covid-19 infection rate among healthcare workers is moving in the “wrong direction”.
The union renewed its call for booster vaccines against the virus to be rolled out to frontline staff.
In response, McCallion this morning said there are around 1,800 healthcare wprkers out with either symptoms of Covid-19 or close contacts.
“Which is significant in terms of both the people themselves and the impact on the services they work in,” he said.
“Having said that, NIAC (National Immunisation Advisory Committee) provide the advice to us, they have provided the expertise, and they’ve served us well through this programme.
“We know that that’s being looked at intensively at the moment in terms of healthcare workers, being one of the next phases of the rollout.”

What you should be asking yourself is why less than 8% (unvaccinated) are accounting for over 60% of ICU cases. So the math.

@Alan Leamy: the vaccines are not 100% effective and never claimed to be. However the more people that are vaccinated, the less likely that people who couldn’t take one for genuine medical reasons or the proportion it didn’t work for will come in contact with it.
@Hugo Bugo: Get away from catchy percentages? You mean when get away from the facts? It’s not rocket science that 10% of the population are making up the majority of icu beds. If you can’t understand that then it’s fine but don’t be acting like your smarter than everyone else when in fact it’s your inability to understand stats that’s the issue here. Another fact is, if all the unvaccinated had have been vaccinated, then we would have significantly less people in icu and our situation would be a lot brighter. Unfortunately, we all have to suffer due to the unvaccinated, congrats.

Life as we know it was ‘eroded’ because of a deadly virus. It’s not our govts fault that that happened, they’ve made a shambles of it in many respects but enforcing the covid passports isn’t one of them. Try getting on a flight without a valid reason for not being vaccinated and see how far that gets you. @Euro is Dead: In fairness, your numbers are wrong. Over 90% of those eligible for the vaccine have been vaccinated. Have not seen exact figures for a while, but think it’s around 75% of population.

The other reality the vaccine os not bullet proof some breakthrough occurs . @Alan Leamy: it is not necessarily that the vaccine does not work, it is people’s immune system may not be fully working, whether they have HIV, have a blood cancer, on radiation or chemo therapy or are taking immunosuppressive after organ transplants. That 40% is out of 93% of adult population. Whereas 60% of unvaccinated in ICU are from 7% of adult population.

@Alan Leamy: Latest data on Covid deaths from the CSO website is that 92% of deaths are in those aged 65+ and this group is 99.6% fully vaccinated.
So at least 92% of deaths are in the fully vaccinated. How does this tally with 60% unvaccinated in ICU? Are none or very few of them dying? Can someone please explain this paradox.

@Alan Leamy: 90% of Irish people eligible are vaccinated. Start asking why 60% of people in ICU make up only 10% of the population. The vaccine lessens severity and your ability to spread it
@Paul Tao: Thanks for asking, I don’t mind telling. I was fine for the first two days after getting the 1st dose of Fyser (just normal side effects, sore arm, bit of fatigue etc.. – I thought all was grand.) Then after two days a sudden headache came on. It never felt like a 999 situation but was major unpleasant. Been to the GP and have been referred for a scan (to be done in the next week), he also offered to refer me to A&E at one stage a few weeks back but I held off. Each week it gets slightly better. But it wasn’t just headache – it was a list of other things that came on at the same time as the headache .. bad fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness. Then about two weeks ago (six weeks after 1st dose) one eye is watering / damp constantly. I feel unlucky in some ways, but I’m starting to feel a bit relieved too that it could have been worse and I’m fairly confident that in another few weeks I’ll recover fully because the symptoms (except for the watery eye) have gotten slightly better over the weeks. If someone put 10 million euro on a table for me to take the second dose I’d say no.
@Alpha Centauri: Well fair play to you for getting the first dose, it is good protection for you. Not to belittle your experience, but wouldn’t it be better to await your scan and speak with a specialist 1st rather than just assuming that your diverse symptoms are from a vaccine dose?
Just another thing to consider – let’s suppose that those symptoms were in fact a reaction to the vaccine dose.. If your system reacted badly to just the spike protein of the virus (in the vaccine) – isn’t it worth considering that if you actually caught the virus it might have been a very bad experience for you?
Now, your immune system will likely have some building blocks to defend against the real thing in case you do get it.
It sounds like you’re on the mend anyway, so hopefully all will be good.
@Alpha Centauri: Just as an aside, I often get watery eyes this time of year – it can be from the weather change, cold drafts, getting the sniffles, even just more time looking at screens etc. It’s a good idea to give your eyes a bit of a rest from screens, avoid reading in the dark and maybe see an optometrist if it doesn’t get better.

This would mean you would be 2.8 times less likely to die if you are vaccinated. Also booster shots have been given out , so hopefully there will be less deaths.

It is good that Ireland has such a high uptake.
It looks like the virus has mutated into a new strain, the only way to combat getting sick to the level where your life could be threatened is to accept ANY and ALL ways to prevent this, that prevention at this moment is health advice, social distance, wear masks, wash hands etc, AND GET VACCINATED.
The ammount of proper sick people I’ve had to deal with while on duty in the ambulance service over the last few weeks is scary. The majority of those people told me the didnt get the vaccination. For gods sake just bloody get it.
