PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS have confirmed 5,590 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
As of 8am today, 505 people are in hospital with Covid-19, including 117 patients in intensive care units.
Yesterday, 2,950 new cases were confirmed while 536 Covid-19 patients were in hospital, of whom 110 were in ICU.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, said: “The current high incidence of Covid-19 that Ireland is experiencing is driven by the Delta variant, which, coupled with the presence of the Omicron variant, means that the trajectory of the disease remains uncertain.
“Booster vaccinations have been shown to produce very strong antibody responses and are likely to provide protection against severe disease, hospitalisation and death from most variants, including Delta and Omicron, at least in the short term.
“In the over 75 age group, where people have been taking up the offer of a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in high numbers, we are seeing significant reductions in the incidence of disease. This is another positive development and further evidence that getting a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine helps to protect from the most severe effects of Covid-19,” Dr Holohan said.
NPHET reported last Wednesday that a further 55 Covid-related deaths had been notified in the previous week, bringing the number of people who have died with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in Ireland to 5,707.

But how are the numbers still so high if the 3% unvaccinated are not allowed in pubs, clubs, restaurants, gym, doctors surgery or almost anywhere else public..are the Government not telling us something

@Raymond Scott: one should at this point know that the vaccine doesn’t completely prevent infection and transmission. Cases now being driven by unvaccinated kids, who in turn are infecting their parents.

I’m going to round all the figures for ease..
There are roughly 4 million people who have been offered vaccines. 3.8 million got the vaccine. About 250 of them are in hospital. Put another way. Vaccinated people have less than 0.01% chance of ending up in hospital.
The other 50% taking up hospital beds are unvaccinated. So roughly 250 people out of 0.2 million. That’s a ten times greater chance of ending up in hospital if you’re not vaccinated.
If they were vaccinated only 20 or so would be in hospital not 250.
There would be only 270 people in hospital and not 500. We wouldn’t be masking children or restricting locking anything down.
Surgeries in non covid medical fields wouldn’t be getting cancelled.
Yes yes it’s your right not to get vaccinated.

I got vaccinated because our crappy healthcare system needs us vaccinated so they can schedule our neighbors cancer surgery and keep running heart care clinics.

Dear god I give up, below 3k yesterday and you’re somewhat hopeful, and nearly double today, it’s actually be depressing.
@The Firestarter: you have to be aware, at this point, that some of the cases go back to October, in this instance and that again the backlog cases to be ‘reported’ total over 3000 again.
So the best way, if you really want to track the Covid stats daily, is to just look at the Hospital numbers and ICU numbers, which continue to drop thankfully
@The Firestarter: better to look at a rolling 10 day average. In fact as Nigel says in next post hospitalisation and ICU are better to look at. Since they are slowly decreasing I expect this wave to be slowly decreasing. But with the vast bulk of society open and Christmas coming don’t expect cases to drop quickly.
And how many flu cases does that number include since pcr does not do a good job distinguishing between the two.
@Barry Cahill: that’s not true, pcr tests are very good at distinguishing between the flu/ common cold and sars-cov-2. PCR tests use the genome of the particular virus to detect it. So unless the flu/common cold virus is very similar to sars-cov-2, a PCR will not mistake the 2.
