22 new Irish ambassadors and senior diplomats have been approved; 11 are women

Nine consuls general are also to be appointed in the UK, US, India, Canada and France.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS approved the nomination of 22 new ambassadors and senior-level international appointments for 2022.

Nine consuls general are also to be appointed in the UK, US, India, Canada and France.

Of the 22 ambassadorial and senior-level nominations, 11 are women and 11 are men.

Including consuls general, today’s announcement brings the number of women taking up Head of Mission roles in 2022 to 18 out of a total of 31.

Commenting on the nominations, Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said:

“I am thankful to the men and women who represent Ireland throughout the world with such professionalism, loyalty and commitment.

“I am also pleased to see the ongoing efforts by the Department of Foreign Affairs in its efforts to reach an improved gender balance in senior-level positions both at headquarters and at our Missions abroad.”

Once all the appointments are in place in 2022, the percentage of female Heads of Mission will be 46%, up from 36% one year ago.

The appointments include Heads of Mission at four new outposts: an Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, and Consulates General in Miami, Lyon and Toronto.

Two ambassadors have been nominated in Africa, one in the Americas, five in the Asia Pacific region, seven in Europe and four in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The ambassadors nominated for appointment in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates will also be involved in coordination for the Missions in South-East Asia and the Middle East and North Africa regions respectively.

Sorry but I’m confused, I thought it was your ability and talents that got you the job, not what private parts you happen to have under your clothes

@Alan Campbell: maybe they had the ability and talents and that is what got them the job? Us women are very capable

@Louise Tracey: coveny said “improved gender balance” was what they were aiming for. The ONLY criteria should be ability to do the job. Gender, religion, ethnicity etc should not enter the selection process at all

@leartius: 93% of nurses are women. That fact is conveniently kept very quiet! There should be 50/50, “gender balance, as Coveney puts it. Hundred of female CV’s should be tossed in the bin, to make way for the men, to bring them up to the 50% mark

@Alan Campbell: without diversity you get biases. When you have biases as a team you can’t do as good a job as you could. There is absolutely nothing to suggest any of the men or women aren’t qualified they just simply fill 11 male positions and 11 female positions.

@Alan Campbell: women fully acknowledge industries like nursing teaching and social work benefit greatly from their male colleagues and the males often do get the role based on their gender and the diversity they can bring to the role.In fact due to this they often progress quite quickly to senior roles. But in all fairness women have been fighting for years for equality in the workplace for women, do we have to fight your battles too? How about the men in these industries campaign for equal rights for 50 odd years or do we have to do that for you too? Maybe because they get the jobs based on their gender in these industries. So go further back campaign for teenage boys to take an interest in these areas. Stop whinging and do something about it.

@Philip Howlin: “balance” should have nothing to do with it. Even if it’s completely “unbalanced” with say 22 women, that’s perfectly fine, if they were the top 22 in the selection process

It’s only half as bad as I thought, it’s only one embassy, Dakar is actually in Senegal. It explains how pointless the whole exercise is, I didn’t even know they were the one and same place. I suppose it might be handy if I ever got lost in Dakar or Senegal or wherever
