BROOKE SCULLION HAS been chosen to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin in May with the song ‘That’s Rich’.
The Derry singer was selected by a combination of a national jury, an international jury and a public vote on the Late Late Show Eurosong 2022 Special last night.
It’s the first time since 2015 that the public have been involved in selecting Ireland’s Eurovision entry.
Speaking after the result was announced, Brooke said: “My nerves are shot! I’m buzzing, I can’t wait to perform again.”
A finalist on The Voice UK in 2020, Scullion co-wrote That’s Rich with Karl Zine and Izzy Warner.
Six acts competed in last night’s show. All six hopefuls took to the stage to perform their entries before the lines were opened up to the public to vote.
Scullion received the top score of 12 points from both the public vote and the international jury. However, she only received four points from the studio jury, leading to a close finish.
Ireland has been drawn in the second semi-final for this year’s Eurovision on Thursday, 12 May. The Grand Final takes place on Saturday, 14 May.

Well done Brooke. I think she gives us the best chance we’ve had in a while to get into the finals. The song isn’t my cupan tae but I’m not her demographic. It’s youthful and “in”. Good luck to her and the team. Definite Netta vibes, as pointed out elsewhere in the comments. It’s an annoyingly catchy tune.

@Paul Shepherd: I suppose we didn’t have the semi finals etc until relatively recently. We also haven’t kept “on trend” with our offerings. Personally, I think all entries should have to demonstrate part of their nation’s culture and heritage, as per the original ethos of the Eurovision.
Terrific performance by Brooke last night! If you didn’t like it it’s probably because you’re a staunch traditionalist like the RTE pane,l after all, the song won despite their low scoring!
@John O’Brien: no, people didn’t like it because it sounded out of tune, all the sound levels were off, it was in fact one of the poorer performances on the show.

From 1910 to 1990 you could easily define a decade by its genre of music, in the last 22 years you can’t really say much has changed at all. Pretty grim. I think Louis Walsh and Simon Gowl own a large part in the decline of any creativity.

@Marcus Mc Cann: I didn’t see any block voting when Italy won last year and Netherlands in 2019. Ireland have been sending poor entries for too long now. The public here just see it as a joke.

Never heard of her, but if RTE had anything to do with her selection she’ll be as much of a turkey as Dustin and the Grimes’es. Reason? Simples, if Ireland’s entry wins then RTE will have to host next year’s Eurovision and that would, on present showing, put them into bankruptcy if not underwritten by our tax monies and licence fees, All my life, including a fair time in Britain under Thatcher, I have been anti privatisation until now with RTE. Too many luvvies earning far too much for what they produce to massage the political egos in Leinster House.
@Niall Sheridan: That’s the point of sponsorship. There would be plenty of companies willing to fund an international event such as this. As for the song and Brooke, it’s as good as any Eurovision entry in recent years and she’ll have a great shot at winning. Eurovision has moved on, catch up!

Despite the Irish media and indeed the general public perception as us as poster boys for the EU the majority of EU population don’t give a fiddlers about the ‘cocky’ irish.
@Gavin Linden: you’re listening to too much UK, europhobic news. The Eurovision has nothing to do with the EU, and many non-EU states compete; Switzerland, Russia, Armenia, etc. In fact, Israel won the competition in 2018. While politics come into it, occasionally (Greece voting for Cyprus, for example), the competition is won by the best song regardless of where it comes from.

RTE messing up the sound is nothing new and if you listen to it on YouTube as I just have, you will hear it properly. Not my style of music but it is on the money for todays market. We have a chance.
