The St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin in 2019 Sam Boal

St Patrick's Festival set to return to the streets of Dublin for 'most ambitious parade ever'

The festival had been cancelled for the last two years due to Covid-19.

THE ANNUAL ST Patrick’s Day parade through Dublin city is set to be held for the first time in two years, with the annual festival being touted as the biggest ever.

The St Patrick’s Festival 2022 is set to begin on 16 March and last until 20 March, with the flagship parade to be held on Thursday 17 March under the theme of ‘Connections’.

The festival, which had been cancelled the previous two years due to Covid-19, says that there will be “more pageants, more marching bands and more participants than ever before” at the parade.

“Over the last six months, hundreds of Ireland’s most dynamic and innovative performers, musicians, designers, choreographers, pageant engineers, artists and makers have been working on delivering Ireland’s most ambitious street Parade ever, in creativity, scale, length and participant numbers,” said the festival organisers.

The parade will be broadcast live by RTÉ, and will also feature audience interaction elements, according to the festival organisers.

Further details on acts participating in the parade are set to be announced closer to 17 March.

The plans will see the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, transformed into a ‘Festival Quarter’ for the duration of the festival.

The day-to-night urban festival will be held at the heritage site, with a 3,000 capacity main stage, comedy tent and a food and craft village all within the barracks. While daytime events will be free, festival organisers have said that some night events will require a pre-purchased ticket.

Acts set to perform across the five days of the festival include:

  • Damien Dempsey
  • Lyra
  • The Mary Wallopers
  • Le Boom + Glass House Orchestra
  • Æ MAK
  • Kevin McGahern
  • Emma Doran

“We are so thrilled to bring St. Patrick’s Festival back to the streets of Dublin this coming March,” said Anna McGowan, Interim Director, St. Patrick’s Festival.

“The very best of Ireland’s creative community have come together to present a spectacular programme of events, the biggest, most exciting offering we have ever produced.

Hundreds of artists, arts workers, makers, creators, live events teams and community organisations, drawn from across the nation, will present a magical five days and nights of live and virtual events, from song, story and performance, to film, theatre, tours, food and so much more.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland said: “After an absence of two years, it’s wonderful to see the return of St. Patrick’s Festival with in-person events and the parade through our Capital’s streets on March 17th which will include a much-missed international flavour.”

The full festival programme is available on www.stpatricksfestival.ie.

h Colin take it easy!!!!! I went to college in Waterford for 4 years!! And I saw, rougher messier night at other times of the year, and that applies to limerick and galway also. Yes you don’t have the mad mob videos you see in the main street of the crowd singing “ya-ya toure” every night but I would bet any money that the guards have arrested well more then 7 on a weekend for drunk and disorderly as,they did 1 of night in rag week in WIT. It’s gotta be taken perspective firstly the vast majority of students do not cause trouble of hassle they enjoy the week. The money that is,raised for charity is surreal, I no WIT was good for it! And lastly I bet anything if people had a chance to do what the students do and go out for the week they would, I’m 25 and finished college and no way I could do a rag week again bit I do have great memories and I enjoyed them. Fair play to them they have the chance to enjoy it so let them enjoy they be fools to miss out on something I say Alot older people are envious of!

Most students work extremely hard throughout the year, both academically and in part-time work. Not all students have grants, and those that do usually don’t see a cent of it by the time they pay rent, bills and food. We’re entitled to blow off steam, in a week that’s actually aimed at raising money for charity. My college, UCC, also ensures that all students are safe and responsible and don’t harass or annoy local residents. Some students do take it too far, but they’re the only ones who’ll make the news. People are very harsh to criticise young people, often forgetting that they themselves were once young and probably got upto similar antics. What irks me is the kind who get their dole or children’s allowance and go off and spend that on a day in the pub – just think about all that.

Fair play to the journal for highlighting the good behaviours of the crowd, something the Irish examiner failed to do.

Yes I agree with you most students are exactly how you coined it. But it’s 10.30 in the morning and the pub is thriving with students aside from anything else it’s not really healthy to be drinking this early? And not something to be encouraged because let’s face it later on in the day when a minority of students break up the place everyone else will be tarred with the same brush.

I’d see that as more the fault of the bars that are advertising this event and aiming their marketing and such directly at students. If they didn’t decide to put on the event, it wouldn’t be an issue. People are so quick to slam students “drinking culture” but the bars and clubs are only too happy to take their business and fuel it all. If it was a total mess and a shambles the bar/club wouldn’t bother.

We do. The cover charge into bars and clubs goes to charity. Also, RAG week is about so much more than drinking – something 99% of non-students overlook or ignore. We have music acts, charity leg/chest waxes, iron stomach contests along with many, many more events. It’s a very successful week for raising money for charities, with alcoholic events being just one, overly publicised part.

GRAMMAR enthusiasts which point out everyday errors are much fewer interesting compared than normal people, according to researchers.
The Institute for Studies say people who write letters complaining about the use of ‘your’, ‘you’re and ‘youre’ have less friends and are fewer able to socially mix. Doctor Henry Brubaker, the institutes head of grammar, says: “Words are very important. They convey meaning and emotion, but they can also be used to bore the tits off you.

Take, for instance, the sentence; ‘If there is one thing I really hate, it is bad grammar. He added: If anyone asks you what is wrong with William Shatners speech at the beginning of Star Trek, remember that the correct response is to say, I am now going to call you an arse, boldly.

For me the thoughts of getting up early to que to get into a pub at half 9 in the morning makes my stomach turn. The health implications are just horrendous for this kind of drinking, even if just for one day…..Oh and paddy’s day, and good Friday, every student night, weekends and any other days people decide is a good day for ‘the session and a bit of craic ‘.

All for going out drinking having the craic ect but didn’t a young student drown in Galway last week after been out drinking on a mystery tour?! Maybe a little respect should have been shown and this day drinking held off for a week or two…

Fine, let them go out and drink. Responsibly. My main problem is that most of these students probably are in some way funded by the tax payer and are missing a lot of college just to get hammered.

What I find difficult to understand is now the parents of these students can afford to finance the 10.30 am start.

I’ve no problem whatsoever with rag week and all it entails, what I do have a problem with is this student john saying its part of our culture. I like a drink as much as the next man but I hate the fact that every big occasion in this country has to be a massive session. St Patrick’s day our national holiday is a disgrace in my opinion, temple bar is a battlefield by 5pm. Then Arthur’s day was invented as an extra drinking day and has been discontinued due to bad press. Part of our culture is international success in a variety of sports on a world stage, part of our culture is literary greats, beautiful countryside, fantastic people, historical sites and many more, not how pissed up we can get

The fun will really start when they find out about the impromptu class tests that are being conducted this week. A few little darling will pay a heavy price for this and i am delighted about that :D
