A PROTEST MOVEMENT by Canadian truckers angered over Covid vaccine rules has become a rallying point for opponents of pandemic restrictions, firing up crowds from New York to New Zealand.
In New York, dozens of municipal workers facing dismissal unless they get shots marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall on Monday carrying giant US and Canadian flags.
“Unvaccinated Lives Matter” and “Workers Are Essential, Mandates Are Not,” read signs carried by the crowd, which included firefighters and teachers.
In New Zealand, inspired by the Canadian “Freedom Convoy,” trucks and campervans blocked streets near parliament in Wellington yesterday to protest against Covid restrictions and vaccinations.
Hundreds of vehicles plastered with messages such as “Give Us Back Our Freedom” parked in streets surrounding the parliament building.
Others drove around the city centre with horns blaring as over 1,000 protesters on foot listened to speeches.
“I’m actually vaccinated but I’m against mandating people to be vaccinated,” said Stu Main, of Wellington. “I think it’s disgraceful, forcing vaccination on people who don’t want it.”
Several Wellington protesters carried Canadian flags, including an expatriate named Billy, who declined to give his surname.
“I’m just supporting the brothers in Canada, fighting for freedom over there,” he said.
The Canadian protests have often tapped into right-wing politics, with Donald Trump flags at rallies and huge interest on conservative online sites.
- Calls for rallies in France -
In France, calls were circulating on Facebook for protestors to descend on Paris for anti-mandate demonstrations this weekend.
Similar appeals were launched in Belgium.
Some of the most vociferous support for the Canadian demonstrators has come from Republican officials in the United States, where Covid mask and vaccination mandates have become a highly partisan issue.
“The Freedom Convoy is peacefully protesting the harsh policies of far left lunatic Justin Trudeau who has destroyed Canada with insane Covid mandates,” former president Trump said.
“Now, thankfully, the Freedom Convoy could be coming to DC with American Truckers who want to protest (President Joe) Biden’s ridiculous Covid policies,” he said in a statement.
There has been no protest in Washington so far, but more than 100 truck drivers in Alaska drove from Anchorage to Eagle River on Sunday to support the Canadian demonstrators, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican, addressed a rally in Eagle River, ADN said, telling the crowd he did not believe the federal government “has the power to look at American citizens and say ‘either you get vaccinated or you get fired from your job.’”
According to the US Centers for Disease Control, fully vaccinated people are significantly less likely to die of the disease than non-vaccinated people.
Several Republican officials in US states have called meanwhile for investigations into GoFundMe after the fundraising site stopped taking donations for the “Freedom Convoy” protest.
GoFundMe removed the “Freedom Convoy” donation page on Friday, claiming it violated the site’s terms of service that “prohibit user content that reflects or promotes behaviour in support of violence.”
GoFundMe said it would refund all of the donations.
After the GoFundMe cutoff, organizers launched a donation drive on GiveSendGo, which describes itself as the “leader in Christian fundraising.” More than $7.2 million has been raised on GiveSendGo by today.
- Spreading protests -
The “Freedom Convoy” demonstrations began 9 January in western Canada as protests by truckers angry with vaccine requirements when crossing the US-Canadian border.
They have since morphed into broader protests against Covid restrictions and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.
Trudeau demanded an end on Monday to the protest that has paralyzed Ottawa, saying “It has to stop.”
“This pandemic has sucked for all Canadians,” he said. “But Canadians know the way to get through it is continuing to listen to science, continuing to lean on each other.”
The truckers showed no sign of backing down yesterday, as several of the nation’s provinces announced it was time to roll back restrictions that count among the world’s toughest.
With authorities struggling to bring the protest movement to heel, Saskatchewan in the country’s west it was ready to lift all pandemic restrictions, with Quebec and Alberta also signaling plans to ease measures.
Today in New Zealand, protesters camped inside the Wellington legislature’s grounds vowed to stay “as long as it takes”.
Many of the vehicles that jammed central Wellington’s streets yesterday have left, but a hardcore of several hundred protesters pitched tents and refused to leave.
Three were arrested after trying to breach the police line as supporters chanted “let them through” but officials said the event remained largely peaceful.

The video has been heavily edited. The first few second show her nodding but this is then seamlessly played in reverse to double the apparent length of time she is nodding. Obviously this makes her actions very unnatural looking. Not a Clinton supporter, just pointing out the weakness of the video evidence.
Merrick Garland will be withdrawn in late October. He’s the offer now, they don’t get one in the Lame Duck session, either they win and get their own guy, or they lose and have to confirm Hillary’s nominee, assuming they still have that authority in the Senate.
John, I think they’ll come back to it late next month if the polls look as they do now but they’ll be playing from a weak position.
If those two are the best candidates America has to put forward for the job of president it really doesn’t say much for the rest of the pool.

The Democrats will be happy with Merrick, he is a normal well adjusted person who can be relied upon to think about an issue rather than refer to a holy book of some sort. At the same time he is a reasonably solid conservative on several issues important to the Republicans. That said, it would be a long walk back for Mitch McConnell and the Party as a whole, if they do it you can safely assume they have entirely given up the election, I agree completely with you there.

I think the Democrats may tell them where to go if they try to put Garland back on the table though, which would be hilarious. If Trump keeps going at this rate Republicans will have to withdraw their endorsements to even stand a chance of getting the Senate.

@fanny, just out of interest the discretion that the president has for launching a nuclear strike on a whim has been removed since SIOP has been abolished at the end of the cold war. Now, they have an OPLAN, which would need the military to put into play a series of operations and checks and balances, before conditions for a nuclear strike would be initiated. There is a plan in place for north Korea being a target, but the conditions are well defined, and not just the president’s decision, even if he has the ultimate veto.

I was in the states on business a few months ago and at most 1 in 3 that I talked to about politics would even consider voting for trump. Just because you desperately want something to be true doesn’t make it so. Discussion forums can easily become echo chambers and we can see that all the time. Compare comment sections in online forums and compare them to something objective like voting patterns and you see that is the case. Clinton is not much liked in the USA, and as I said before if the republicans had a halfway reasonable candidate they would wipe the floor with her (there are about 12 of the initial republican candidates I would have voted for in front of Hillary). Napier: The millions paid to Iran was not a ransom, it was money they were owed from a deal with the Americans prior to the revolution. Iran paid millions for a delivery of weapons but following the overthrow of the Shah the US refused to pay it. Iranians took the US to court at the Hague and knowing that they had no case, the US agreed to a settlement.
There’s a lot to abhor about Obama’s policies but with regard to Iran he’s much better than the Republicans and possibly Clinton who have been eager to overthrow the regime. The reason they have been unable to is because Iran have a strong enough military deterrent unlike Iraq but that hasn’t stopped them from the bellicose language towards Iran. So the video wasn’t of the plane carrying the cash but they still did give the money to Iran? So the important point is true but you are condemning him because he was mistaken over a video clip? How about concentrating on the face Obama is giving billions to Iran?
Stef, the money was never in dispute. Trump just invented a story to make himself seem relevant to the story. Either that or he’s suffering from senility. Unless the money was shaped like hostages.
The real story is the sophisticated politically game play in which Trump was encouraged to go up as Presidential candidate so as to defeat the more viable Republican candidates, thus clearing the way to shoe in Clinton as President.
Trump was just a patsy who is an intentionally lame duck candidate.
I’m still amused that there are actually people in the US and in Ireland who perceive Trump as a serious candidate for the US Presidency. Of course, Trump is not a serious candidate.

John McCain or even Mitt Romney would probably beat Hillary such is her level of unpopularity. Trump however has shown consistantely over the past 2 weeks that he’s no diplomatic skills whatsoever to become President. It seems like the majority of the undecided vote are coming to this conclusion themselves.
