Ukrainian MPs gather briefly in person to vote on 'critical' defence legislation

The MPs met in secret and shared photos and videos of the extraordinary gathering afterwards.

DOZENS OF UKRAINIAN parliamentarians met secretly in person today to vote on “critical” legislation in the country’s parliamentary building.

The Kyiv Independent reported that it passed a “military package”, which includes criminal liability for cooperation with Russia, an increased penalty for looting, and forcible seizure of property owned by Russia.

The politicians were seen in multiple videos singing Ukraine’s national anthem before voting on defence and security laws, despite the ongoing threat of Russian bombing.

The Verkhovna Rada building is located in the capital Kyiv, and there are 450 members of the Ukrainian parliament.

Members of the parliament Lesia Vasylenko and Kira Rudik were among the parliamentarians who met in secret today, and shared videos and photos of the politicians gathered in the parliament after they had returned to a safer location.

Vasylenko wrote: “Parliament sits in person today to vote essential defence and security laws. A quick and tense session. We sing the national anthem in unity as we begin our session in the most targeted building in all of Ukraine.”

“Today, under a secrecy, 300 MPs gathered together to vote for the critical legislation pieces in the parliament,” Rudik said.

“We voted to ask our allies for a no-fly zone over Ukraine. We voted for mobilization and nationalising Russian assets. We did our job. Now the country can fight harder.”

The first deputy speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Oleksandr Korniyenko said that an “order had been approved” by the parliament for multiple measures.

These included a request to immediately establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to protect the civilian population, objects of world cultural heritage, and critical infrastructure.

He also said that the parliament voted to introduce peacekeeping forces in Ukraine and appeal to the UN “for mediation to stop the war”, and to investigate Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions as alleged war crimes.

Another decision by the parliament was to establish a ‘green corridor’ to safely evacuate women, children and the elderly in cooperation with the Red Cross, and to provide food, clothing, and first-aid supplies to casualties and civilians, Korniyenko said.

It can probably do business with anyone as long as it involves envelopes, general shadiness and an utter lack of scruples or compassion.

The Provos are gone and apparently SF are not linked with them, so why not tell what they do know ? Compassion doesn’t put food on the table !!! Read the title of the article . It’s not all about FF . The question is about can FF consider the idea of doing business with SF , which happens to be the mostly likely candidates for the next coalition government unless FG do better than expected and will join with FF or do the more unthinkable , work with SF . These typical idiotic copy and paste Shinner bot replies about living in their head etc sound clever once or twice . Rather tiresome and moronic when you use them with abandon without much thought .

Those fees that you refer to have NEVER been the stumbling block when it comes to access to education ! It is peanuts compared to full tuition fees ! The evidence was clear that most people didn’t do their research or understand it . Obviously FG lies (FF hardly disapproved ) about it being about Jobs was disgraceful but again , the public didn’t bother to understand it . The saving grace was the protection of Ireland’s Commissioner and the protocols over irrelevant issues like abortion and neutrality (two of the main grounds for the no vote )

FG and Labour got the country back in shape with necessary cuts & removal of dross that was no longer needed or too costly to keep . 2014 onwards , recovery was coming and like it or not , FG kept the books balanced and looked at the tax laws to encourage FDI. Governments always take credit , even if the object was started by a previous government . Here’s an example : Donnacha O’Malley is hailed as the man who brought free secondary school education. Well, yeah, but Jack Lynch as the previous Education Minister did A LOT OF THE GRUNT work to achieve that , it wasn’t just some idea that arose when O’Malley made his announcement

@Christy Dolan: FG could and should have ensured that Ireland was included in the EFSF (includedinthisreferendum), thus limiting the amount of bondholder debt we assumed but they were played like little schoolboys. The EFSF was created precisely because of the banking crisis to prevent nations from having to absorb private banking debt, but the EU slammed the door in our faces once the referendum was done saying ‘you’re not included’. We had leverage at that time but FG lacked the minerals to do it, backed down to a threat and got royally shafted. Followed by the infamous head-pat for the final insult. Sheer incompetence and cowardice that our grandchildren will pay for.

@uUleRhCu: The way I see it is that SF will probably be the largest party after the next election, but might not – hopefully wont – have the numbers required to form a government on their own.

But hopefully will have the numbers that a coalition with another party with a sense of decency would suffice to form a government.

That excludes Labour and the Greens (from a decency viewpoint).
And Renua (are they still kicking around?) and that other like outfit.

As things stand, I’d like to see the Social Democrats being the ones to make up the numbers.
I think if any small party can keep a larger party honest it might be them.

    But that’s a long shot.

FF would do a deal with Putin to retain power, so they’ll be falling over themselves in the rush to form a coalition with SF, although they will be saying the opposite in public, but will have to make sacrifices for “the good of the country”, “stability”, or some other such nonsense.

Maybe the lads in Clonard Monastery who sheltered many a Ra man might offer some light into the conduct of other branches of the RCC (not saying Redemption priests were up to that ) . “Jarry” never discussed what his kiddy fiddling bother was up to and why did Jarry send him down to Dundalk to work with the youth while he knew about the claims made . Is there any credence as to what Maria Cahill said (Labour , what were they thinking ? )

They could form a drink drivers anonymous club around here.. absolute gowls putting up sheds to make a killing from refugees with state money. Like FG, FF can’t fix our problems because they created and perpetuate most of them.

That’s some woeful assumptions that the civil service will cooperate too! What criminal acts of FF and FG ? It’s not a crime to break a pledge about who they decide to enter government with. Clearly , you’d behind the times but prior to 2016 a lot of people where whinging that FF and FG didn’t actually go into coalition . Under the idea of that allowing Irish politics to have a clear left and right wing divide . Now you are whining that FF and FG did do it in 2020 . Criminal? Some idiotic decisions were made at HQ about candidates that helped split or lose seats that were there for the taking . Problem is , he’s popular on an individual front , was the most popular party leader , not so long ago. He is FF main asset because , let’s be honest , the rest don’t do anything . They are just a P.R. exercise with some backslapping for the good Boys and a opportunity to put the Probes back in everyone else so they Toe the line and abide by the Party Dogma. This debate about M. Sadly the same can be said about the other Political Party’s as well. We won’t have true Democracy until the imposition of the Party Whip is removed from Politics.

@uUleRhCu: The British classed as Terrorists the organisation FF/ FG originated from. Do let that get in your revisionists way. Martin while criticising the Republican movement is very forgetful of the monetary contribution made by FF in funding the PIRA. Suppose if Martin stated there was no bank bailout, you can’t expect him to remember the funding…A bit hypocritical of Martin don’t you think.

When SF stop the pretence that a socialist republic is desired or possible ; when they stop associating with provo veterans . Maybe . Now harm having some socialist notions but since they get a lot of support from the USA , they will have to drop their silly notions about Cuba and Palestine etc . When they come clean and admit that they can’t deliver on what they promised …..

Maybe then FF could do business with SF . The demands aren’t that difficult to over come .

But we will soon have our new politics which renders your old school conventional wisdom entirely moot. It already is of course, which is why FFGs old style mud slinging fails every time. He speaks as if both FF and FG didn’t emerge from a bloody history. The point is, the violence is over and done, and THAT is what everyone must concentrate on. Standing on a soap box moralising and trying to climb up onto a pedestal from which to look down on those with different views helps no-one and brings zero progress. If Sinn Féin wins the next election, wouldn’t coalition give FF the capacity to rein in (what it might see as) excesses by SF? SF will bring long-needed change to the governance of Ireland so it represents the people better and is less of an elected dictatorship than under FFFG, whereunder the needs of the wealthy few are favoured over the common well-being of the people..

I think it was Ukraine’s ambassador to Latvia (if not, it was a Ukrainian official of similar rank) stated they needed to kill as many Russians as they could now so there would be fewer Russians left for Ukraine’s children to kill when they grew up.

Clearly, this appalling genocidal sentiment represents a radical nationalism far more extreme than anything we ever heard from the IRA.

But strangely, Martin seems to have no problem with the Ukrainian version of violent extreme nationalism.

It not a call Martin should be making. It’s down who the people vote for. Also history tells the more you try and suppress something the stronger they get. No cop on but that’s no surprise.
