What will Covid-19 bring next? The World Health Organization outlines three scenarios

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, said the virus still has “a lot of energy left”.

THE WORLD HEALTH Organization laid out three possible paths that the Covid-19 pandemic might follow in 2022 – with a new, more virulent variant the worst-case scenario.

The WHO said the most likely way forward was that the severity of disease caused by the virus would wane over time, due to greater public immunity.

But the UN health agency also said a more dangerous variant of concern than Omicron could be lurking round the corner.

The WHO released its updated Covid-19 Strategic Preparedness, Readiness and Response Plan, with the organisation’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hoping it will be the last.

It lays out three possible scenarios for how the third year of the pandemic will pan out.

“Based on what we know now, the most likely scenario is that the virus continues to evolve, but the severity of disease it causes reduces over time as immunity increases due to vaccination and infection,” Tedros told a press conference.

He said periodic spikes in cases and deaths might occur as immunity wanes, which may require occasional booster vaccinations for vulnerable people.

“In the best-case scenario, we may see less severe variants emerge, and boosters or new formulations of vaccines won’t be necessary,” he said.

“In the worst-case scenario, a more virulent and highly transmissible variant emerges. Against this new threat, people’s protection against severe disease and death, either from prior vaccination or infection, will wane rapidly.”

Dr Tedros said that scenario would require significantly altering the currently-available vaccines, and then making sure they get delivered to the people most vulnerable to severe disease.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, said the virus still has “a lot of energy left”, going into the third year of the pandemic.

Last week, more than 10 million new cases and 45,000 deaths were reported to the WHO, which said the number of new infections would be far higher as testing rates have dropped.

At the end of last week, more than 479 million confirmed cases had been registered throughout the pandemic, and more than six million deaths, although WHO acknowledges that the true toll could be several times higher.

@Decko49: no harm to ya brother. Write, email, visit the clinics. Just saying that on balance, if you’re a decent skin, you don’t need to be asked to be kind to animals. There’s some really unpleasant characters in the Dáil. Suggest highlighting their ugliness might be a better route. That, and of course, fundraise for the various charities that do great work and adopt a pet yourself from one of these set ups.

Yet another example of dog abuse in this country, these animal abusers are no different from the dog racers who raced 90 dogs to death on Irish tracks so far this year in taxpayer funded dog racing. Animal welfare is 3rd world in Ireland, we are not a dog loving country and should be shamed internationally.

Every year rescues beg people not to give pets as Christmas gifts but they’re ignored and then the dumping starts even before the New Year comes around.

For gods sake will you all get down off your high horses. That’s probably the reason that it was abandoned in the first place. Because the person couldn’t deal with all the judgement from do-gooders. You may mean well but it doesn’t help people surrender unwanted animals if they are going to be judged for it? The person left the animal near the center so there was a fair chance that it would be found. They could have chained it to a gate anywhere & you don’t know the circumstances of the injuries. The animal may have been injured in an accident. It may have gotten out on its owners, & have been hit by a car. It may be someone who’s relative has developed dementia & can no longer look after it. So before you all rush to judge the person that tied it up. Think!!!

@Niall O’Neill: no it wasn’t, but there are reasonss for this. If the person was heartless they could have just shot the dog and disposed of it but they didn’t. They brought it to the gates of the ispca where they assumed that it would be found. Perhaps later than they thought but everyone getting on their high horse and getting out the burning torches and pitchforks doesn’t help. I’ve been in the receiving end of these crusaders when I was trying to deal with my mother who had dementia. She had 16 cats and I was dealing with it with the local ISPCA, when a local animal rights group stuck their oar in and started harassing my mother. Which made a confused old woman worse. Eventually I had to threaten them with legal action if any of their members set foot over the threshold again.

Well if you want to do that fine, no doubt your dog is your child but for most people in a poor rural area a dog does a job or it’s gets destroyed. Maybe they should have done that? When the dog was injured they should have put it down themselves.
