The Evening Fix: Sunday

Things we learned, loved and shared today.

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#ATTACK: Two Irish men aged in their 30s are in critical but stable condition in hospital in Melbourne after being attacked by a man with a hammer at their accommodation overnight.

#PROPERTY TAX: Two ministers said today that the government has not yet decided how property tax could be calculated, while the Department of Finance said that the interdepartmental report on the issue is currently with Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.

#THE LETTER: Minister Michael Noonan has said he favours publishing a letter written by then-ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet to then-Finance Minister Brian Lenihan ahead of Ireland accepting the Troika’s bailout loan. Here’s what happened when we asked for a copy of that letter.

#SYRIA: Syrian opposition and pro-government fighters were this evening blaming each other for the massacre of dozens of Syrians after footage purporting to show the bodies was posted online.

#NEIL ARMSTRONG: Tributes have been pouring in for Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. In this BBC interview filmed just months after his return, the Apollo 11 astronaut recounted his experiences on the moon mission.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Retronaut has shared these great photos from 1931 of famous architects dressed as their buildings.
  • If you’ve ever sent (or received) some disastrously-spelled tweets, then this Huffington Post round-up of the worst Autocorrect fails of August will appeal to you.
  • The Tall Ships left Dublin earlier today and were treated to a 21-gun salute by the Defence Forces. In this photo, sailors from the ‘Cuauhtemoc’, a Mexican Tall Ship, wave goodbye as the ship sails out of Dublin Harbour. (Julien Behal/PA Wire)

THINGS WE SHARED

  • BoingBoing has posted this interesting piece about how the design of Facebook’s site affects its users’ privacy setting choices.
  • While NASA marked the death of pioneering astronaut Neil Armstrong with this slideshow of his career at the space agency, the American Copy Editors Society has explained why it is so hard to find photos of the him as he walked on the moon.
  • Whatever about selecting one of these unusual Irish locations for your wedding, could you see yourself adopting this latest wedding trend – morning-after photos?
  • America’s Republican Party has cancelled the first day of their National Congress in Florida due to an approaching hurricane, but this anti-Romney video parody of The Brady Bunch TV show has been doing the rounds in anticipation of the party’s meeting:
