Riots in Sweden 'linked to criminal gangs who target police'

The country has been rocked by a series of violent protests sparked by a far-right politician’s plans to publicly burn the Koran.

SWEDISH POLICE HAVE said the riots that have shaken several cities and towns in the Nordic country are extremely serious crimes against society and suspect some protesters are linked to criminal gangs that intentionally target police.

Sweden, a nation of 10 million people, has seen unrest, scuffles, arson and violence since Thursday that has left some police officers and protesters injured. It was triggered by Danish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan’s meetings and planned Koran burnings across the country.

“We suspect that those involved (in the riots) have links to criminal gangs,” national police commissioner Anders Thornberg told a news conference on Monday, adding some of those “criminal individuals” are known to police.

“I have been in touch with the public prosecutor to prosecute these individuals.”

Sweden’s national police commander, Jonas Hysing, said yesterday that 26 police and 14 individuals — protesters or other people — have been injured in the riots and 20 police vehicles destroyed or damaged.

The latest riots broke out on Sunday night in Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city, as an angry crowd of mainly young people set fire to car tyres, debris and rubbish bins in the Rosengard district.

Protesters threw stones and police responded by firing tear gas into the crowd. A school and several cars were set on fire, but the situation calmed down early Monday.

A total of 11 people were detained and three people arrested in Malmo. No serious injuries were reported.

Since Thursday, in addition to Malmo, riots, unrest and violent clashes have been reported in Stockholm, the central city of Orebro, the eastern cities of Linkoping and Norrkoping and southern town of Landskrona.

Police have been forced to use weapons in self-defence, Hysing said. Three people were hurt in Norrkoping on Sunday as they were hit by ricochets as police fired warning shots into a crowd of protesters.

“There is a lot to suggest that the police were targeted,” Hysing said, adding that some protesters were suspected of attempted murder, aggravated assault and violence against an official.

Both Thornberg and Hysing stressed that the main target for the rioters was Swedish police and society, not Paludan – seen by many Swedes merely as an agent provocateur – and his Stram Kurs (Hard Line) party, which runs on an anti-immigrant, anti-Islam agenda.

Thornberg, Sweden’s supreme police chief, said “criminal individuals” who took advantage of the situation with Paludan’s Swedish Easter tour and joined the riots, were the main suspects for the violent flare-ups of violence.

The unrest escalated quickly after Paludan’s first demonstrations, which were met by counter-protesters in many places last week.

“We must put an end to this early. What we see here is a very serious crime,” Thornberg said, referring to the riots.

Justice minister, Morgan Johansson, said on Monday that he continues to have great confidence in the Swedish police despite the unrest over the weekend and pledged more resources to law enforcement.

“When you end up in these critical and aggressive situations, there’s nothing else police officers can do but to put up a hard fight,” Johansson told Swedish news outlets. “We cannot accept that perpetrators commit this type of violence.”

Iraq’s foreign ministry on Sunday summoned Sweden’s charge d’affaires over Paludan’s planned Koran burnings, reportedly saying that such activity could seriously endanger Sweden’s relations with the Muslim world.

In Iran, dozens of students gathered on Monday at Sweden’s embassy to protest against Paludan’s planned Koran burnings.

Chanting “Insulters of Koran must be condemned!” they also repeated traditional slogans such as “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!”

    Half a billion for than 20 miles of road.

    This is HALF of what it costs in urban areas of the US. Half.

    Just plain mismanagement and probably corruption.

    We Irish can’t do big projects.

    Single carriageway roadway….Wow let’s celebrate like its the 1930s. Perfect proactive solution not to include passing lanes on new construction. Car with trailer max speed 80km; car behind it max speed 100 with no safe area to pass, what could go wrong? Solution they come up with rather than acknowledge their failure is to reduce speed limits to 80 for all. Simple decisions designed by simple minds.

    @Irish Conservative: Completely new road and area relatively flat so road should be straight enough, similar to Ballagh/Charlestown bypass. Overtaking slower traffic should not be a problem with a bit of common sense.

    @Bert Carolan: It is usually the volume of on coming traffic that creates the problem for passing. Single carriageway roads are Seven times (7x) more dangerous compared to dual lanes per Road Safety Foundation. Building passing lanes to alleviate congestion safely is common sense.

    @Irish Conservative: If your stats are correct then fair point, though I do think we have a tendancy in this country to blame roads and speed limits for accidents rather than driver behaviour.

    They should continue the M4 all the way to all the way to Sligo and be done with it. Small-minded thinking again, like we don’t want any of those 10-story skyscrapers in Dublin.

    @hi from heaven: Strokestown not bad. I won’t miss the stretch of road, you could be stuck behind a truck for miles.
    Take a detour through Clondra and it’s 3 bridges sometime just to see what the main road used to be like.

    Watch whoever gets the contract milk the taxpayers like a prize cow. I’ll bet the same road could be built abroad for a fraction of that cost. We have a reputation as being prime for riding when it comes to construction, we just bend over every time

    I’d be more concerned that the contract is a bit more water tight than the children’s hospital one.

    It didn’t really double in price… same as the childrens hospital, they low ball and then add on extras..
    Only difference is road bridge bluff was called on a couple of projects that they had done previously and hence went bust..

    Something wrong with the costings here for a Single Carriage Way Road, the new 30 Klm A6 Derry to Dungiven Dual Carriage Way has just been completed at a total cost of £250 Million Stg, which is a lot cheaper per Klm than it is in the South.

    The money was all spent on archaeologists, ecologists, planners and lawyers – the “make work” crowd. People need to remember that money spent by the government goes somewhere – it doesn’t just go into a black hole – it goes towards paying labourers, digger drivers, quarries, tarmac contractors, plant hire companies, engineers, fuel suppliers, mechanics and a lot of the local shops will see a lot more trade during construction. SO this money goes into the economy – OUR economy, it helps stimulate economic growth, it helps people put food on the table and pay their mortgages, it provides employment in an area of the country that has suffered underinvestment for generations. It’s about time the NW got some of what Munster & Leinster have – capital expenditure and investment.
