Tributes to young camogie player who died after match in Co Galway

Athenry’s Kate Moran has been described as “a role model and leader both on and off the field”.

LAST UPDATE | 19 Apr 2022

A COMMUNITY IN Co Galway has been left in shock after a young camogie player died after suffering a head injury during a match in the county.

The incident happened during a game at Ardrahan yesterday afternoon.

Kate Moran, who had represented Galway at junior level and who was playing for Athenry, suffered a serious head injury during the game. She was brought to hospital but died from her injuries today.

As a mark of respect to the deceased and her family, Galway Camogie said it has postponed all adult and juvenile games this week.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed officers attended the scene of the incident: “Gardaí were called to an incident in Ardrahan on Monday, 18th April 2022. A woman was later taken to University Hospital Galway.”

Tributes have been paid to Kate locally.

“This is a terrible tragedy for her family, our club and our community. We are deeply saddened by these events,” said a statement from Athenry Camogie Club.

“Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Moran family and friends. Kate will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

“Kate began playing with Athenry Camogie Club at underage level and quickly progressed to senior A level with great distinction. She holds a Feile, county minor and other titles. She played in a club All-Ireland intermediate final.

“She won two All-Irelands at U16 level with Galway, both titles she was incredibly proud of. She was a tremendous role model for our many underage players and a wonderful leader both on and off the field of play. Her bubbly personality will be remembered for eternity.

“We have been in contact with Kate’s parents and they have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this difficult time.

“Offers of support have been pouring in and are greatly appreciated.

“The club is open to members, to support them and to offer them advice and guidance.

“We would ask you to respect our privacy at this time,” said the statement from Athenry Camogie Club.

Galway Camogie also issued a statement paying tribute to Kate.

“Our heartfelt and deepest condolences to the Moran family, Kate’s friends and all the members of Athenry Camogie Club.

“She was a member of Galway Camogie underage panels and won two U-16 All Ireland medals with Galway.

“She was a role model and leader both on and off the field.”

Not a bleeding hope would mine be online whenever they want. They like to be out playing like normal kids.

@John Barry: To be fair John, its great for you, your kids have a safe place to go out and play, that isnt the case for everyone, which is where tablet, xbox and playstations come into their own to reduce social isolation etc. Really the kids can not go on whenever they want as they must go to school etc but a better approach here would be to educate parents on safeguarding online for example the family link app etc for when kids are online, rather than saying they should be outside like “normal” kids.

@Sarah Lou: I totally get where you’re coming from Sarah. & Didn’t mean to sound condescending there. They do have a safe place when with their mother but not me as I live in an apartment right beside a main road. But I make sure I’m out with them for walks & play in the green around the corner. But yes you are right, a lot more education for parents is needed. I have their tablets timed for use & they can do nothing or download nothing without it coming to my phone.
