New Orleans braces for Isaac, seven years after Hurricane Katrina

The tropical storms is expected to build strength as it approaches America’s Gulf Coast.

ALMOST SEVEN YEARS to the day since Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc in New Orelans, weather forecasters are warning that Tropical Storm Isaac could strike America’s Gulf Coast with hurricane force.

The storm caused 24 deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but caused little damage as it passed the Florida Keys today.

Around 60,000 people suffered a power cut in Florida as a result of the storm and the Republican Party cancelled the first day of its National Convention due to the storm warnings.

The latest projects from America’s National Hurricane Center suggest that the storm is heading straight for the Louisiana coast and could have built up to hurricane force by the time it makes land along the Gulf Coast:

The NOAA National Weather Service is warning of a “significant storm surge threat expected for the northern Gulf Coast” and hurricane warnings are currently in effect for the area east of Morgan City, Louisiana towards Destin, Florida, including metropolitan New Orleans.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been posting tips on Twitter for people preparing for the storm:

New Orleans residents have been stocking up on provisions and preparing their homes for the storm’s arrival:

I was on holidays in Florida when katrina rolled through – my god I have never seen or felt wind and rain like that – it was only pickin up speed then- passing Florida – hopefully this one won’t be as bad but every hurricane causes a lot of damage cause the land level is low

@Beth It is really pathetic when religious folk or Jesus junkies put such oxymoronic comments like God works in mysterious ways etc. it can all be explained by science nothing supernatural to it. But your “invisible idol” seems to be found wanting in creating such disasters and also not helping in the aftermath. Religion easily has the best bullshit story of all time. Think about it. Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money.

Orlando so far today. Typical rainy season day. Some heavy rain overnight until this morning, stopped midday. Right now little wind, dry, cloudy and high humidity. Schools closed but just an ordinary day.

Ohh Sean please we can see it on the news, it is not a typical rainy day, it is a nasty day, maybe you slept through the worst of it, but for Irish standards as a rainy day that is no ordinarry day ….. lets hope the storm eases for the rests of the states and no lives are lost…….

Ha James couldn’t agree with you more. Stupid religious nuts judging everything when it’s obvious that their stupidity and backwardness is holding the world back…. You know god put dinosaur bones on earth to test our faith laughed at.. Now if anyone believes that someone living in the sky is our god and decides everything they should head straight to the nearest mental home check themselves in for life and let the rest of us aka the sane ones get on with actual life..peace

“Christianity: The belief that some cosmic Jewish zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Makes perfect sense.”

Im not religious but are people not entitled to say what they like and believe in what they like. Its rather pretentious of people to put people down for making a comment that is based on religion. Its like its the cool thing to do now. You are probably the same people who would be out in support of whatever topic is cool at that time. Basically your just followers, its a brave person that posts somethin god related these days braver than being a sheep anyway
