Labour leader Keir Starmer speaks to supporters in Barnet, London after the party clinched victory in Barnet in local government elections PA

Keir Starmer to be investigated over ‘beergate’ allegations - Labour leader denies Covid breach

The Labour leader has been under pressure since footage emerged of him drinking with colleagues in 2021.

LAST UPDATE | 6 May 2022

KEIR STARMER IS to be investigated by police amid allegations he broke lockdown rules last year following receipt of “significant new information”, Durham Constabulary said.

The Labour leader has come under pressure since footage emerged of him drinking a beer with colleagues in April 2021 in Durham during campaigning for the Hartlepool by-election.

Keir Starmer has insisted he is “confident no rules were broken” after it was announced he is to be investigated by police amid allegations that he broke lockdown rules last year.

The Labour leader – who repeatedly called for Boris Johnson to resign over rule-breaking in Downing Street – told reporters this evening: “Obviously I understand the police need to do their job, we need to let them get on with that but I’m confident there was no breach of the rules.”

Durham Constabulary announced on Friday it was investigating the claims following receipt of “significant new information”, having previously said they did not believe an offence had been established.

The police U-turn follows mounting pressure on the force to re-examine the allegations after footage emerged of the Labour leader drinking a beer with reportedly up to 30 colleagues at a constituency office in Durham in April 2021 during campaigning for the Hartlepool by-election.

Starmer this week said he wanted to focus on the cost-of-living crisis and not Conservative “mudslinging”.

At the time of the alleged gathering, non-essential retail and outdoor venues including pub gardens were open but social distancing rules, which included a ban on indoor mixing between households, remained in place.

A police statement on Friday afternoon said: “Earlier this year, Durham Constabulary carried out an assessment as to whether Covid-19 regulations had been breached at a gathering in Durham City on April 30 2021.

“At that time, it was concluded that no offence had been established and therefore no further action would be taken.

“Following the receipt of significant new information over recent days, Durham Constabulary has reviewed that position and now, following the conclusion of the pre-election period, we can confirm that an investigation into potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations relating to this gathering is now being conducted.”

Police previously said they did do not believe “an offence has been established in relation to the legislation and guidance in place at that time and will therefore take no further action in relation to this matter”.

A spokesman this month said they had “received a number of recent communications on this subject, which we are considering and will respond in due course”.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie Johnson, and Chancellor Rishi Sunak are among those to have already been fined for breaking Covid laws.

Hope Boris stays on as leader. We need someone strong to stand up to the EU.

@Maurice O Neill: He has literally made UK more subservient to the EU than has ever been the case. They now have to follow more EU laws in order to trade with their largest trading partner than ever, all their negotiated exemptions gone, all the red tape cut by being part of the EU wrapping up their economy but yeah… he’s fighting the EU.

I wonder if the conservatives where saving this for the performance in local elections. It’s some good deflection news. Even if Keir is a bit of an aloof leader.

@Twitruser2022: in fairness Starmer did lure Johnson into traps getting him to lie to Parliament about party-gate on the record in Parliament. While not the most charismatic leader he is very adept in strategy.

Mr. Starmer is somewhat of a fraud, this piece I linked contrasts his treatment of Saville and Assange while he was over the crown prosecution service.

Christ. The single worst outcome of Watergate was every hack slapping “gate” at the end of whatever the scandal du jour is and thinking its catchy or incisive.

“Sir” Keir received a knighthood. Didn’t they also give a knighthood to Jimmy Saville? Kind of takes the shine off such an award.

He’d be a useless prime minister. Maybe a tad less woeful then Boris but that’s not a compliment. The by election results aren’t a victory for Labour as much as they are just a defeat for the Tories. Folks may not want Boris anymore but even if they vote for Stamer it won’t be because they actually want him he’s just not Boris

Laboue may well be better off with Starmer gone.
Just don’t come across well on media.
Lisa Nardy (I think) who contested the leadership with him was a far better bet.
Don’t make any odds to me just seem to enjoy uk politics more than the Irish stuff
