Persistent heatwave in India and Pakistan highlights climate crisis devastation

The extended hot and dry weather has consequences for water shortages, energy supply, and air quality.

BLISTERING HEAT HITTING South Asia over the last two months has persisted into this week, creating increasingly more difficult conditions.

Both India and Pakistan have recorded Celsius temperatures in the high 40s that far surpass expectations for spring, adding to a body of evidence pointing towards the devastating impacts of climate change.

April was Pakistan’s second-driest month since 1961, with many areas experiencing “extreme[ly] deficient rainfall”, and the hottest April that the country has recorded in those 60 years.

In India, average maximum temperatures were at their highest of any March in 122 years, with intense heat affecting even the northernmost region.

Deaths due to heatwaves in India have increased by more than 60% since 1980, according to its Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The extended hot and dry weather has a multitude of consequences, with a lack of water hitting reservoirs and affecting the growth of crops and orchards.

In Pakistan, the public has been asked to make “judicious” use of water “in all aspects of life” and to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight.

The melting of snow and ice on mountains risks triggering floods; air quality has worsened; and large areas of land are at risk of extreme fires.

An important bridge on a highway linking Pakistan and China collapsed due to a glacial lake bursting and flooding, causing the bridge to buckle and fall when the current battered its pillars.

The northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh usually experiences rain, hail and some snow in higher areas around this time of year, but parts of it have had no precipitation in two months and hundreds of forest fires have broken out in recent weeks.

Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization Professor Petteri Taalas explained that heatwaves “have multiple and cascading impacts not just on human health, but also on ecosystems, agriculture, water and energy supplies and key sectors of the economy”.

“It is premature to attribute the extreme heat in India and Pakistan solely to climate change. However, it is consistent with what we expect in a changing climate,” Professor Taalas said in a statement.

“Heatwaves are more frequent and more intense and starting earlier than in the past.”

The higher temperatures have increased demand for energy and a shortfall in energy supply has caused power outages, further exacerbating the effects of the heatwave.

India has granted a “special dispensation” to the Ministry of Coal to relax certain environmental compliance rules to allow mines to operate at increased capacities in an effort to restore supply.

However, falling back on coal to assuage the effects of the heatwave is no relief for climate scientists, who have identified that burning fossil fuels like coal is a driver of climate change and more severe extreme weather events.

Climate crisis

Although it is too early to say definitively whether the extreme heat in the region is solely caused by climate change, as Professor Taalas of the WMO pointed out, it is known that the climate crisis is causing heatwaves to happen more frequently and to be more intense when they occur.

A report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year found that human-caused climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes across the entire globe. Those extremes include events like heatwaves, floods, droughts and storms.

The IPCC said the scale of recent changes to the climate system is “unprecedented” over hundreds and thousands of years and that human influence is the primary driver of global warming.

“Deep reductions” in greenhouse gas emissions are crucial to limit rising temperatures and prevent global catastrophes.

To determine whether a specific weather event was influenced by climate change, scientists can run a model to look at different scenarios of what the world would be like if humans had not burnt fossil fuels or produced greenhouse gases.

It allows them to study whether a heatwave, a storm or a cold event, for instance, would be as probable or as intense in a world without human interference on the climate.

Speaking to The Journal earlier this year, Dr Friederike Otto of World Weather Attribution (WWA), which analyses links between climate and weather, said that heatwaves have been made “more likely, more intense, because of climate change”.

“For heatwaves, climate change is really an absolute gamechanger and often makes the events orders of magnitude more likely,” Dr Otto said.

Research like the work done by WWA is a recently-developed field becoming more prevalent internationally, but a recent investigation by The Journal found the Irish government has no plans to drive studies on the role of climate change in specific extreme events in Ireland in the near future.

In Europe, the Copernicus Climate Change Service reported a record level of extreme weather last year, including the warmest summer and hottest day ever registered in Europe – 48.8C in Sicily, Italy.

“2021 was a year of extremes including the hottest summer in Europe, heatwaves in the Mediterranean, flooding and wind droughts in western Europe,” the service’s director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement.

“This shows that the understanding of weather and climate extremes is becoming increasingly relevant for key sectors of society.”

I believe it’s down to the parents of kids to drill in their kids it’s ok to be whoever you want. My 9 and 7 year olds where watching tonight and didn’t understand why she was being bullied. That’s because myself and my wife have always thought them to accept everyone for who they are.

@Charlie: At the end of the day there will always be bullies. They are an evolutionary certainty and will always exist. The very basis for the differentiation and castigation of the outsider by the tribe is baked into our psyche…not only culturally or societally but in an evolutionary way too. The same as white blood cells attack anything they deem to be different or not of the organism. This all happens on an instinctual level well below the level of cognitive and informed reasoning. It’s just a simple fact of being human…stray too far from the norm and others will attempt to either push you out or shame you into conformity. And I’m not making excuses…just stating what is. All the inclusivity and anti bias training in the world will not break that cycle as its baked into the subconscious level of us being social animals. The whole gender dysphoria thing is another story and there is too much unknown in psychological and genetic terms to even contemplate on it…but if there are levels of societal and cultural influence at play in the bullies doing what they are doing…there are also much more recent trends influencing kids to question their gender and identity which may not be exactly healthy either. There are a growing community of people who went through the whole transition from one gender to another and regret the whole thing…and also a lot of kids simply grow out of it. It’s something that the parents, doctors and the society at large around these people need to thread carefully around and yes other kids should be made aware that it’s not okay to treat anyone else as being different, even though they present themselves as being different…but in the end all kids know and can process is that it’s weird to them and we can’t really stop kids from expressing that either. Kids say what they think and dont really filter…and unfortunately this kid will just have to learn to let that stuff go and laugh it off. I think most of us were bullied at one stage or another…I certainly was…I was small…nerdy…wore glasses…but in the end I proved that I could laugh at myself and even joke about myself and it lead to acceptance as a lot of that joshing that kids do is shit testing to a certain degree. If I could give that kid one bit of advice it would be to learn to laugh at yourself and the bullies and not take shit do seriously. If you do…its a short trip to the edge of a bridge from there. You can’t stop people being people…you can only control your own reaction to them. But hopefully this kid will be okay.

@Kevin Tyrrell: excellent post Kevin. To be blunt though, giving the child that manner haircut is asking for trouble in the school yard. You simply cannot expect anything else only attention with children that age unfortunately. To be clear, I’m not saying she shouldn’t wear her hair as she wishes, I am saying that bullies will ALWAYS target those a little different and while that of course is wrong, it is the case sadly.

@Kevin Tyrrell: Excellent post Kevin. I thought it was great the way she mentioned the bullies in the first part of her interview but I think Turbidity should not have encouraged her to say what she said the second time she spoke. He won’t be by her side on Monday when she has to face the bullies again. My son was bullied for a while on the school bus because of his weight. His older brother eventually told us about it and I spoke to the parents of the boys that were doing it and asked that they be as discreet as possible when dealing with it. At first they didn’t want to accept that their sons were bullying but eventually they sorted it and my son was never aware that I intervened. I hope Sofia gets to be who she wants to be without having to deal with bullying.

I have great admiration for all the kids involved due to the fact that it was undoubtedly nerve racking being on the most iconic Irish TV show of all time but I’m a bit conflicted about the bullied child bullying the bullies with the FU I’m on telly, not a psychologist but not sure if the bullied becoming the bully is the fix and in my experience the bullies are usually created by being bullied themselves by older kids, siblings or maybe even parents, They are also victims in a way and if the bullied become bullies then where does that leave us, also tubridy nearly split the young golfers head open on his part active swing, my nine ya old left with an hour left from boredom, the show seems to be becoming a bit of an open therapy session for adults

@Sean Harmon: Agree with you … I really think that the bullying segment was about gender and driving that narrative with the adult audience. Lets call a spade a spade… it was obvious before Ryan asked why she was targetted by bullies… are we now seriously going to have the gender discussion with 8 year olds? Let them be kids… she came across as tough enough to handle herself in the end in my opinion!

    @Máiréad Hurley / RED HEAD:
I just think it is not a profitable enterprise to indulge any child’s perception of the motives or intentions of their interactions with any other kids. Most kids, especially sensitive ones can and frequently do misinterpret or exaggerate their interactions with others, especially if they perceive them as being negative. Most kids are just curious about sonething or somebody that’s different…and yes…some can be aggressive towards that because they are sensitive themselves to the outsider or more frequently have been bullied and abused themselves. I don’t believe for 1 second any kid goes out to intentionally harm another if they themselves are well adjusted. Most kids just have no filters and can be blunt. Sensitive kids can take this as their not being accepted and in today’s world of YouTube videos expounding that the marginalised shall inherit the earth and everyone shall give them sympathy and be their shields…well that can be a huge incentive for any child to adopt that part or even seek it out. Being accepted for some kids is hard…I know all about it myself but in the end you can use this to develop yourself into more than you are and this is what Tubridy should have been expounding from the start and ONLY THAT. Big her up…support her…but bringing her up by laying others low…especially other kids…that left a sour taste in my mouth. And then the kid says I’m on the tele and you’re not…that showed there is a tendency there in that kid that is all too natural also to dispense some pain from a place of pain. There is too much about this situation Tubs didn’t know to be making those sort of statements and I’m sure half of it was to big himself up as a progressive voice by standing up for the marginalised against the oppressive patriarchy or something…but for crying out loud…the patriarchy in this case are kids. Would he be so sensitive and caring if a kid who had merely out of curiosity asked this Sophia…”are you a boy or a girl??” or “what’s with your hair” or even said “youre a bit weird” could now be branded a bully, a bigot, a transphobe and as a consequence face stigmatisation itself…because now this kid has a big brother in Ryan Tubridy to hide behind if it ever feels threatened. I think the only way to support this kid is to tell her that she is good, useful, okay a bit different but still valuable and leave it there. But hey…he took a step beyond that and very very few are seeing it was a step too far. I’m all for empathy and sympathy…but you have to have such feelings for every party in every situation or otherwise you are being biased and agenda driven yourself.

Well if anyone out thinks this they have to watch the toy show that was on last night I don’t think his off script and continuity could be matched anywhere.
Great show Ryan wouldn’t like to be the person that has to fill your boots on the toy show long May it last .

@garry murphy: in time gone by yes a bully was a bully. But in todays culture people are being branded bullies for merely just questioning something outside the norm. A bully used to be somebody that harassed and beat on or purposefully ostracized somebody else…a bully these days is anybody including a kid who just doesn’t want to play a certain brand of identity politics and thinks such a kid as this Sophia is a bit weird. And you are talking bollox of you don’t believe this is going on in today’s world.

Kids just want to see all the toys and some famous people surprising kids with gifts plus some great singing & dancing and the last thing they want to see is RTÉ putting in a gender message!! Let kids be kids and enjoy the toys.

It seems the way that media is going these days. Its not what anyone other than the supporters of such agendas want to see. Its the toy show…show the kids that are watching toys and kids performing. It’s like as if the thing was run by a religious order or something who would find some way to smuggle Jesus into the programme, except here it’s woke agendas and RTE can’t seem to help themselves. I don’t pay a license fee every year to listen to Tubridy et al give us a lecture and tell any kid who even is a bit weirded out when encountering a gender non conforming kid and maybe asks a question or is a bit dubious as to what’s going on, that they are open to be branded as a bully and a bigot and according to Tubridy are destined to be a loser as a child and a loser as an adult. That isn’t fair. And while I get he wants to support the kid…thats all anyone wants…but you show your true colours by branding kids as bullies and lowering them in order to elevate the kid you sympathise with.

It is aimed at children. Am I right??? Waste of time watching it and three of my young g/kids thought exactly as I did even though they watched with their own parents. Rubbish!!!
