QUEUES AT DUBLIN Airport are running “smoothly” this afternoon after a busy period early this morning.
Passengers reported wait times of approximately one hour earlier today as thousands of people file through the transport hub on the first day of the Bank Holiday weekend.
However, by midday queueing time had dropped to less than 10 minutes for most passengers going through security in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Airport operator DAA said the queue lengths dropped significantly after a “busy first wave”. DAA spokesperson Kevin Cullinane said systems put in place to prevent significant backlogs have “worked very well”.
Cullinane said another major influx of travellers was expected at the airport in the mid-afternoon.
“This morning was another busy first wave of departures from Dublin Airport this Bank Holiday Weekend,” Cullinane said.
“We had 11 security lanes open in both Terminals 1 and 2 from 4am with a maximum queue time of 59 mins in T1 prior to 06.00 and 40 mins in T2.
“Passengers are heeding the advice to arrive 2.5 hours before a short-haul flight and 3.5 hours before a long-haul flight. Those checking a bag are advised to allow for up to an additional hour if they can by checking with their airline,” Cullinane added.
It’s been a turbulent week at Ireland’s largest airport with lengthy queues resulting in over 1,000 people missing flights last Sunday.
The issues prompted international news coverage and resulted in the DAA appearing before the Oireachtas Transport Committee to answer questions about the management of the facility.

@BadBob: went through Shannon last week , 4 passengers in front of me. I’d say 3 mins at max. You don’t have to take off shoes, can leave electronics in hand luggage and also no limits on liquids going through security.
@Brian Hunt: true story but you can hardly use Shannon as an example. Unfortunately it’s a ghost town nowadays

Yes it all ran smoothly on Friday for me but the filth and dirt at all gates, in toilets, people smoking in toilet cubicles, faeces and toilet paper in cubicles and people for two or three flights at each gate caused such confusion. I spoke to one cleaner whom told me there should be 6 on a normal shift and there was only two of them yesterday (Friday). It was the worst filth I have ever experienced at Dublin Airport

@Brian Costigan: It was maybe 5% of the problem. The main problem was not near enough staff on. And those people on Sunday that turned up early were right because if they came when they were supposed to they more than likely wouldn’t have made their flight.
@Brian Costigan: I’m pretty sure the fact that almost 40% of the security operatives due to be on duty last Sunday were absent was the problem.

I found no problem with security last Monday. Took a little longer but was relatively painless. I spent 2 and half hours before that queuing to drop my bag with SAS which subsequently didn’t arrive at my destination. Today is Saturday and I still don’t have the bag. Well done SAS 5 days later still no bag. Doubt it will come tomorrow either Sunday and Monday is a bank holiday in DK so not holding much hope.
DAA suggesting that waiting an hour to get through security is progress is absolutely insane. A functioning airport should take no more than 10-15 minutes at any time of day to get through security.
I went through on Thurs evening. No Drama, Q was long but kept moving and staff seemed to be doing a great job. Of course if some people also would just grasp the basic rules of passing through security. Thing might be quicker again. Ie, having daft things in your bags and tech stuff buried deep in bags.
