UK bill to unilaterally change Northern Ireland Protocol will be published on Monday

The Taoiseach said the UK’s plans to act unilaterally over the protocol would be “deeply damaging”.

UK LEGISLATION WHICH attempts to override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol without the agreement of the European Union will be published on Monday.

The bill to unilaterally change aspects of the UK’s Brexit withdrawal agreement with the EU will be presented by UK foreign secretary Liz Truss on Monday afternoon.

The protocol ensures there is no hard border on the island of Ireland by Northern Ireland effectively remaining in the EU’s single market for goods. This has created checks on trade between Britain and Northern Ireland.

Reports in UK media indicate UK prime minister Boris Johnson has been warned by Tory Eurosceptics that they will vote against the legislation if there are any attempts to water it down to make it more acceptable to Brussels.

The European Commission has repeatedly rejected UK demands that the Brexit deal be changed.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin this week said the UK’s plans to act unilaterally over the protocol would be “deeply damaging” and mark a “historic low point”.

Martin added that he disagrees with the UK government’s handling of the protocol and accused it of failing to engage with the EU.

Yesterday evening, Sinn Fein vice president Michelle O’Neill warned the UK Government against unilateral moves to change the protocol during an address to party members in Belfast.

O’Neill said: “Boris Johnson knows that to gamble the protocol is to breach international law and to jeopardise the British Government’s agreement with the EU on their withdrawal and future trading relationship, with colossal political and economic impact.

“The threat of unilateral action by the Tories to legislate and breach international law serves nobody’s interests, anywhere, at any time.”

At the same time, DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson was addressing a party meeting in Kilkeel, Co Down, where he said there is a “unity of purpose within unionism in relation to the Northern Ireland protocol”.

He added: “Even opinion polls show that the vast majority of unionists support our stance that the protocol must be resolved before devolution can be restored.”

The DUP has refused to allow the power sharing Assembly to meet or an executive to be formed as part of its protest against the protocol, which has created a trade border in the Irish Sea.

I’d have less disposable, but I’m not starving either. Some weeks I haven’t got a cent and other weeks I do. Joys of being self employed. Feast or famine.

What I can say is I can’t seem to create savings. before the crash I could. This year is looking better than last for me, marginally. But January was very tough so far.

It’s because they’ve had tax increases like the USP and property tax and they’re paying more VAT on everything. Petrol prices keep fluctuating. They may of had an increment at work or something but you’d need a calculator to work out whether you’re better off for a lot of people. They were selling fruit and veg for 8 cent in the supermarket before Christmas. People spend their disposable income in so many different ways like. You can’t just look at the headline inflation rate.
If you’re asking them, do they feel like they have more disposable income, then it’s an easier question.

@Sam your point is a bit stupid! If you spend 4 years in college and graduate with a degree why would you want a job in another area? If they wanted a job in another field of work that’s what they would have studied! Better off leaving where you can obtain a desired job with real prospects

Plenty of people leave college with a degree in a given area and go into a different area through necessity on leaving college. It’s not an option for everyone, nor am I saying it is, but it doesn’t always equate to leaving the country either.

They then down the line manage to get into the line of work they had originally wanted. Hardly a stupid point Pat. Common sense.

    @Pat.

My eldest graduated from college with 2 degrees six years ago.
Because he had no practical experience he could not get a job in his chosen field of work, for over 2 years he worked for a pittance.

He chose to emigrate to Canada and within one month got a job in what he studied for, he is now very well respected and gets headhunted on a regular basis.

Sometimes you just have to take what is offered and work your way up, just because you have a degree/masters/PhD it doesn’t give you an automatic entitlement to a job in that specific area.

Have to laugh at them bringing in water rates. It’ll probably be cheaper to buy bottled water in aldi and wash with that! We’ll be running around in the rain with shampoo in trying to wash. I haven’t money going begging to pay water rates. They simply have to cut taxes next year or they will cripple any kind of recovery for years to come. The only way things will change now is if people have a few quid to do something with otherwise any bit of growth will disappear as soon as the water bills hit the door mats of the nation.

Not sure how people have more disposable income. For me things are slowly getting worse. Mortgage payments over the last year or two have gone way up with variable rate hikes. Couple that with gas/electricity price hikes and petrol price increases and it’s a challenge just to make ends meet.
Never thought I’d consider it, but looking at the quality of life to be had with a job in my industry in Canada or Australia, emigration is now a very likely choice for me if I can bring myself to terms with living away from my immediate family.

It can only increase if you’ve started a job or had a pay rise. Price of living is still going up, elecy and gas up, and property charge paid recently ,, In reality how disposable income go up for the majority of people.

I loved the email I received from Electric Ireland and the recent price hike. Made themselves out to be champs by deflecting the majority of their ‘cost increases’ onto themselves until Jan 1 2014 but could no longer sustain it Ah the poor lads…

So let me get this straight, EL’s ‘costs’ go up so the bills increase while my income remains stagnant? Oh yeah you made 188m in profits after tax up until June 2013…don’t let your shareholders take the slightest hit. no that wouldn’t be fair on them..

    https://www.esb.ie/main/press/pressreleaseWS.jsp?id=3234

They never once apologised for the price hike I should add..

Haven’t been in a pub for a couple of years, don’t smoke and have a non-existant social life. Up to about 3 years ago we did have disposable income, now we can’t make ends meet. I’d hate to be trying to live on social welfare.

My disposable income goes up and down like anyone elses. If it goes down I know I am overspending,Up and I know I am managing my money okay.I try save a bit the good months and use those funds to prop up the bad times.Sometimes at the end of a year I can be ahead a few dollars. We have two kids so we have to have a bit in reserve all the time for the unexpected expense. The idea of my disposable income going up ,that in a sense it can be spent unwisely so to speak ,is not something I can afford to do.I think it is called budgeting when you look after you money….some find that an alien idea almost.

Have a couple of quid left over each payday, able to go for a pint or two without worrying. So it appears to have gone up, mind might well have something to do with having finally moved back into the PAYE sector. Be interesting to see what the picture looks like at the end of this year.
